John says the new tax law places a 10-thousand-dollar cap on the amount of state and local taxes and property taxes filers can deduct beginning with the 2018 tax year. Another change impacts the amount of mortgage interest deduction you can claim on your taxes. It also reduces the amount of home acquisition indebtedness for which you can deduct interest expense as an itemized deduction from one million dollars to 750 thousand dollars, for homes purchased after December 15, 2017.
