Good morning, afternoon, and evening,

Today, I finally resumed my daily practice and recording after the two-week disruption from Nashville’s ice storm. This solo guzheng piece is inspired by two pictures of the same pair of pine trees in my front yard—one taken during the storm, the trees broken and shrouded in ice and snow, and another from today, sunny and restored to normal. The air is full of the fragrance of the broken pine branches. In playing, I felt a deep appreciation for being home again, and for the quiet reminder of how insignificant we humans are compared to nature. It amazes me how tough those pines are, still standing there solidly, growing again beneath the same sun.

Friends in Nashville,

My concert Moon Hunter will be held at Ingram Hall at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music on Sunday, February 15th, at 3 p.m.

Admission is free, thanks to support from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

The Ingram Hall lobby will open at 2:00 p.m. for a Lunar New Year celebration featuring cultural exhibits and activity booths—including Chinese Drumming by the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville.

This concert is part of Blair’s Music Unbound Artist Residency and celebrates the upcoming Lunar New Year of the Fire Horse. I’ll present traditional Chinese music ranging from instrumental works and folk operas to my original compositions. In the second half, local artists will join me on stage for collaborations featuring Persian setar and drum, cello, Blair Jazz performers, and visual components to create a cinematic effect on several songs.

Today, I had a wonderful meeting with a dear friend and musicologist, Professor Isidoira Miranda of Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, and the production team at Ingram Hall to prepare for my upcoming concert on February 15th.

I also got to watch the jazz students’ rehearsal led by Professor Ryan Middagh, the director of Jazz Studies at Blair. They will be joining me for a couple of songs. I can’t imagine a better way to welcome in the Lunar New Year—the Year of the Fire Horse, 2026—with my talented Nashville homies!

I recorded this Chinese folk song today. It’s called “Thirty-mile Village” (三十里铺) from Shaanxi province—a well-known love song in China. I’ve known it since elementary school. My parents used to sing it a lot at home, and my father would change the lyrics to sound funny. We laughed so much whenever everyone sang together in our house. I’ve always thought the world would be a much nicer place if we all communicated through singing :) Imagine arguing through singing. That must be really funny!

In this recording, I stood my Guzheng up and sang into the sound hole in the back. You can hear the long harmonic reverb created by the vibration of my voice resonating through the wooden body (see photo below). If you have an acoustic instrument at home—a piano, guitar, cello, violin, or anything with soundholes or open strings—try singing into the holes or near the strings. You’ll hear harmonics of the pitches bouncing back. It’s very therapeutic for the brain to receive those sound waves.

I recorded this two-track piece for prepared guzheng today, thinking of my hike next to a frozen creek this morning. I tapped my fingers on the ice: some parts sounded like a deep drum, others like gongs. I can imagine playing this piece with other string players, percussionists, and electronic musicians at Colorado’s Red Rock Amphitheater under the Milky Way—for hours and hours.

Good morning, afternoon, and evening,

I have returned to my quiet Nashville home from a whirlwind and productive trip to New York City, where I gave a showcase performance two days ago. My guzheng made me feel grounded even from the 25th floor up in the air during my stay in the heart of Times Square (photo below). I got to see old friends and made new friends during the APAP conference for the performing arts industry. I am very grateful to my management, Halac Artists, for making it happen.

Today’s solo guzheng piece is a tribute to my first solfège and ear training teacher—Professor Sun Hong (孙虹). She passed away yesterday in Beijing at the age of 90.

When I was five, I began attending the weekend solfège and ear training program at the China Conservatory of Music. I was placed in Professor Sun’s class, where I remained for the next six years, throughout my entire elementary school education.

Professor Sun taught many prominent individuals who have since become influential professors, educators, composers and musicians in China and around the world. The last time I saw her was in a pavilion by the lake in Beihai Park - an imperial park in Beijing. We were both there to learn Kunqu opera (about 600 years old history) from a master who held singing gatherings in that beautiful setting. Even as a senior, Professor Sun was still seeking to deepen her knowledge, hoping to incorporate traditional music into modern pedagogy rooted in our own heritage and ways of listening, playing, and singing. Her lifelong dedication to improving music education inspired me deeply.

I am so grateful that such an extraordinary educator introduced me to the world of music. Though I was too young to remember the specific details of our lessons, I can only imagine the profound impact and foundation she built for me. To this day, I have kept all the text books that were from Prof. Sun’s class. They are in my music studio in Nashville, with her hand writings on them marking homework for me.
