First of all, thank you all for another year of supporting my music! It’s not the end of the year yet, but I just want to share my gratitude to you - old listeners from the beginning of my Substack (started in May 2020) and new paid supporters today. Sometimes when we feel powerless towards the world’s craziness, music can be medicine for our heart. I hope my music daily can be a place where you can rest your heart for a moment from whatever the darkness you are experiencing.

This two-track prepared guzheng composition was composed and recorded today. The four keychain rings (photo below) took my mind away to a joyful place.

I’ve missed you all. Last week’s concert at Bellevue College was wonderful! I’m especially grateful for the hospitality of Professor Naeim Rahmani, who leads the college’s International Guitar Series. Before I arrived, he arranged for a beautiful guzheng from the Seattle Guzheng Studio to be delivered to my hotel room so I could have plenty of time to warm up. To close the concert, I had the pleasure of performing with the Bellevue College String Ensemble under Professor Rahmani’s direction—joined by musicians from Iran, Thailand, Congo, the U.S., and China. Here are some photos from that special collaboration.

For today’s piece, I originally planned to name it after the frost flowers (see photo below) that I saw on a hike near my home in Nashville. But just as I finished recording the last track—while waiting to press stop in the recording app—I heard footsteps outside the window. I ended up having to re-record the whole track >_<

So, I’ve changed the title to “Person from Porlock.” If you’re in the northeastern U.S., I hope it gives you a little high-energy boost to fight off the cold!

In today’s solo guzheng improvisation, I focused on using the traditional bending technique with my left hand. Bending the strings on the left side of the bridges is a signature sound in much of the classic guzheng repertoire. When these bent pitches form melodies, they sounds like many local Chinese dialects to my ears. There are old stories held within the resonance of each bent note.

Soon, I’ll be traveling to Seattle to perform at the Bellevue College International Guitar Series. I’m honored that this concert has been featured by Seattle’s legendary Earshot Jazz (photo below)—especially since I’m the only non-guitarist in this year’s series. That said, guzheng players actually share a lot with guitarists when it comes to plucking the strings. I’ve often found myself deep in nerdy conversations with guitarists around the world about picks, strings, and plucking techniques :)

I had fun making my first multi-window and multi-track video today! I’m not sure if it was luck, but the audio from the different tracks actually matched up. I did listen to the metronome click from GarageBand through my headphones, though it’s not always guaranteed that everything will line up perfectly. I just went with the flow and followed the click as closely as I could—though sometimes, when the click faded, I had to count silently in my head.

This was really exciting for me, especially since I wasn’t sure how well the technology would work out.

By the way, the bandana on the guzheng (lower register) is to mute the strings so that there was less resonance.

This two-track guzheng piece begins with the sound of birds chirping in the forest. It has been a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday for me. I hope yours hasn’t been too stressful if you had to travel. Getting from place to place has become less pleasant with more flight delays and cancellations.

I walked up the hill near my home in Nashville. The view of downtown (photo below) looks to me like a sheet music in the sky to me — a notation for a song that could only be composed this way at this time of a year.

If you are still on your way home, I hope this piece brings you calmness.
