    This version of No Release is very much the full-length version.
    There is a prolonged solo guitar section, where everyone else leaves the stage apart from the lead guitarist.
    During this interlude, one of Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions makes an appearance.
    A traditional Newfoundland folk song, She's Like the Swallow, also makes an appearance.
    Once this solo period is complete, to represent a passing of time and a change of scenery, the song resumes.
    We believe No Release was never performed by a band, although it may have been a Masters of Drone song briefly.

    It is about what happens after the dust settles.
    This is a song about rebuilding and reestablishing oneself after a long awaited and messy breakup.
    Its various sections convey different moods and energy levels.
    Silence was a part of George's short-lived three-piece Masters of Drone set in early 1986.

    Fun Facts:
    * Short and Sweet is in the key of A minor.
    * We believe it was composed in the first few months of 1986.
    * It was part of the set of The Addled Eggs before that band morphed into The Subterraineans.
    * The acoustic rhythm guitar was played on Senga’s Yamaha steel string.
    * The 12-string was an Ibanez acoustic with a cutaway.
    * Dean’s rhythm guitar was performed on a black Squier Stratocaster plugged into a Sound City head and an unknown cabinet.
    * George’s lead guitar was played on an Ibanez Roadstar plugged in to a five-channel HH P.A. head with a pair of dual concentric HH P.A. cabs.
    * Effects used include a Boss HM2 distortion, a Boss GE7 graphic and a Guyatone Analog Delay.
    * George added the Wasp to fatten out the bottom end a little.
    * It was one of the first Subterraineans songs that Jerry learned to play on the bass.
    * Dean would say “It’s got to go in… and out… in, and out.”
    * Fortunately George knew what he meant and was able to translate this to Jerry.
    * Short and Sweet was recorded using a Tascam 244 portastudio.
    * A pair of Aria mics were used to record everything – an AM 60D and an AM 20D.

    * The song was mixed to cassette on a Realistic SCT-60 twin cassette recorder.
    * The serial number for the cassette machine is 05200319.

    * After this song was uploaded to SoundCloud, it was discovered by a band called The Eldar.
    * They honoured The Subterraineans with a beautiful cover version of this song.

    * Short and Sweet is an incredible and epic song that had the power to profoundly affect people who heard it live.
    Sadly Dean took his own life by suicide at the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol, in 1994. He was just 29 years old.
    In Short and Sweet, Dean sings “Give me life” – we hope by keeping his songs in the public domain we are able to do that, just a little.

    * The lyrics were written on 3rd July 1986, according to an original lyric document.
    * The guitar part had been composed a few months previously.
    * George was very pleased that Dean was able to write some lyrics to complete the song as the guitar part pleased him.
    * The melodic wailing towards the end represents the sirens of police cars.
    * The drum solo represents the blows from fisticuffs, boots and truncheons that rain down from all sides upon the victims of police brutality.
    * Dean wrote these lyrics very shortly after being shocked and horrified to witness his friend Jack the Frag being brutally arrested and beaten in Exeter High Street in broad daylight at around lunchtime for having a blim of hashish in his pocket.
    * Dean himself had been attacked and brutally beaten by police whilst travelling to the unofficial 1986 Stonehenge Festival just a couple of weeks before.
    * The previous year, the Stonehenge Festival was prevented from happening by the police.
    * That incident became known as The Battle of the Beanfield, and the terrible and unnecessary police brutality was documented in the media worldwide.
    * The Levellers wrote a song about the incident on their well known album Levelling the Land.
    * A few weeks after this in autumn 1985, George was taken into the back yard of Exeter police station and assaulted by an officer for reporting his bicycle stolen.
    * Police brutality was commonplace in England in the 1980s.
    * A lot of people in those days referred to the police as “Thatcher’s Gestapo”.
    * Fortunately the uk police are far better today than they were in the 1980s.
    * Due to many years of cassette deterioration, the quality of this recording is not great.

    The painting itself came from a street market in York in around 1984 and was given to Wud Records as a gift. They have always loved it. It seems to represent the spirit of Wud somehow, as they venture forth carrying their musical flag through the underworld, leaving a trail of music on the journey.
    Fun Facts:
    * This song is in the key of E minor.
    * It was written by Graham on his old Arbiter electric guitar.
    * We believe it was probably composed at 62 Victoria Street, Exeter in very late 1985, or at 4 Grosvenor Place, Exeter, in the summer or autumn of 1985.
    * Other titles Graham composed around this time were Stone, Perfection of Being, Temptation and Mouse Art.
    * Stone, Temptation and Mouse Art were all performed by the first incarnation of The Ug Brothers.
    * When The Ug Brothers reformed in 1994, they resurrected Mouse Art.
    * At least one of these songs – Temptation – was a lyrical collaboration with Yvonne Crone.
    * We believe that Speeding with the Starlight was composed entirely by Graham.
    * Due to the passage of time, we have no way of being able to confirm any of this.
    * Speeding with the Starlight was recorded using a Tascam 244 portastudio.
