  • Out Of His Head
The Subterraineans consisted of Dean Trotter (vocals, guitar, percussion), George Davies (guitar, vocals), Jerry Peirce (bass, vocals) and Graham Barbe (drums). The band was formed from the ashes of The Addled Eggs, so in that sense can be considered a phoenix. The Subterraineans formed in September 1986 and continued until around March 1987.
These songs were recorded when The Subterraineans had been rehearsing for about two months. They had not gigged at this point. Some of the songs are a bit rough and the quality of the recording is not great as the cassette has deteriorated over the years, but it is interesting to hear these songs nevertheless. It would seem that Graham was the chief presser of the ‘record’ button on this occasion.

  • Band of Georges: Песня За (Piestnia Za)
Песня За (Piestnia Za) by George.
From Volume V Side A of the Band of Georges.
Music and lyrics by G. Davies.
    Composed 16th April 1985.
    Recorded August 1986.
    Mixed November 1986.
    Lifted from cassette May 2025.
    Copyright © 1985 Explicit Music.
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
    Fun Facts:
Песня За in Russian is pronounced Piestnia Za in English.
This was the longest composition George created.
It is in four separate parts and these have been separated in an EP version.
Each part is shorter than its predecessor.
The first chord is a magical chord that suddenly came to George's fingers as he was composing the music for Indian Summer.
The EDP Wasp makes an approximation of the synth sound desired, but is not very close.
George finds the lyrics and vocal performance unlistenable due to being too close to his soul.
He still likes Part 1 and Part 4 though.

  • Band of Georges: Write to You
    Write to You by George.
From Volume V Side A of the Band of Georges.
Music and lyrics by G. Davies.
    Composed 19th May 1985.
    Recorded August 1986.
    Mixed November 1986.
    Lifted from cassette May 2025.
    Copyright © 1985 Explicit Music.
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
    Fun Facts:
Write to You consists of classic riffs and esoteric chords on the guitar.
George found it difficult to deal with the loss of various friends who had moved away.
He decided to write to them, including his muse, to whom he sent a special package with tape as well as a letter.
George wanted the package to arrive on May 23rd, as he had discovered the 'rule of fives', and that might be a cosmic date for such a thing to plop through a letterbox.
This song was written a day or two before the mail-out.
It was not clear if the package ever reached its recipient, but it was not returned, so perhaps it did.

  • Band of Georges: Losing Your Grip
    Losing Your Grip by George.
From Volume V Side A of the Band of Georges.
Music and lyrics by G. Davies.
    Composed 6th May 1985.
    Recorded August 1986.
    Mixed November 1986.
    Lifted from cassette May 2025.
    Copyright © 1985 Explicit Music.
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
    Fun Facts:
Losing Your Grip was part of the set of Wud.
Each of the three verses was written for a different person.
Played live, George would turn the Electric Mistress on and off.
All the knobs were turned up to the maximum.
In this version, he didn't like the click it made, so it was used in the Tascam 244's auxilliary channel.
This was a stereo channel but the effect was only in mono, so the results are a bit strange.
Some of the song is in 6/8 and some is in 4/4, so the Boss Dr Rhythm had to be turned on and off at appropriate moments.

  • Band of Georges: Planet Earth
    Planet Earth by George.
From Volume V Side A of the Band of Georges.
    Music by G. Davies.
    Lyrics by R. Holloway.
    Composed circa 16th May 1985.
    Recorded August 1986.
    Mixed November 1986.
    Lifted from cassette May 2025.
    Copyright © 1985 Explicit Music.
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
    Fun Facts:
Planet Earth features a lot of wholesome Electric Mistress whooshiness on the guitar.
This was another song for which George wrote some words, then asked a friend to write some different ones.
These lyrics were penned by Zaphod.
George and Zaphod would later record a version of this for a conservationist group called Habitats Under Threat.
There was a special wood near the Willow View caravan park on Straightway Head near Ottery St Mary where the Wud posse would go camping.
It was decided in a planning office somewhere that the busy A30 should be re-routed and run right through the wood.
Protest as the people might, the road was built anyway.
Much of the wood has now gone and is bisected by one of the busiest and noisiest roads in the uk.
Happily the clearing where camping took place still exists.
Planet Earth was performed by the band Wud as their set opener, but they only performed it on bigger stages.

Песня За (Piestnia Za) Part 3 by George.
From Volume V Side A of the Band of Georges.
    Music by G. Davies.
    Composed 16th April 1985.
    Recorded August 1986.
    Mixed November 1986.
    Lifted from cassette May 2025.

    Fun Facts:

It means something like "Song for..."

The EDP Wasp makes an approximation of the synth sound desired, but is not very close.
    .
Here is what George had to say regarding listening again to Песня За in May 2025:
Ah, the epic. I still like parts one and four, but parts two and three… no. Part two is so intense, it’s a tough listen and one I can’t manage again without having to hide in a small cupboard. Too much soul. The lyrics and vocal performance are both way too close to the bone.
I remember trying to play this with Ken at Matridge Festival and I just couldn’t do it and stopped. Not like me at all, but there we are. Later somebody said, “You must have felt like that for a long time,” and it was true.
Part three is just… padding? There are a couple of nice riffs in there but it’s mostly just a lot of notes and noise. This whole thing would be far better if there were no vocals and the third part were to be edited drastically.
That very first chord is the one that suddenly came to me in Indian Summer.
I quite like the version of Песня За played by just Marc and me when we were in Wud. There are no vocals!
The EDP Wasp is not really the right sound, perhaps the same city as the ballpark is in, but no closer. At least the thing plays the right part. Mostly!
