President Ronald Reagan established the U.S. Gold Commission in 1981 primarily to evaluate the role of gold in the U.S. monetary system and to assess whether the country should return to a gold standard.
During the 1980 presidential campaign, Reagan and the Republican Party platform expressed sympathy toward the idea of re-examining the gold standard. This was partly a response to growing public and political dissatisfaction with inflation and economic instability.
The establishment of the Gold Commission was seen as a way to fulfill a campaign promise to study the issue, appealing to conservative and libertarian factions within his party who advocated for a return to “sound money” policies.
Reagan was a proponent of limited government and free-market principles. Some of his supporters, including supply-side economists and advocates of the gold standard (like Milton Friedman’s intellectual successors or Austrian School economists), argued that a gold-backed currency would impose discipline on government spending and prevent excessive money printing by the Federal Reserve.
The gold standard was viewed by some as a mechanism to reduce the power of the federal government and the Federal Reserve over monetary policy.
The majority of the commission members opposed a return to the gold standard, arguing that it would be impractical and could limit the flexibility needed to manage the modern economy. They believed that monetary policy under the Federal Reserve, despite its flaws, was better suited to addressing inflation and economic growth.
Minority Report: A minority, including Ron Paul and economist Lewis Lehrman, strongly advocated for a return to the gold standard, arguing it would provide long-term stability and discipline.
