So I hinted that something exciting was coming, and the first part is here! Today, we’re tackling a series I’ve had my eye on for a time. It is getting good reviews, has regular print, large print, and audiobook / Audible options; it is in NC Cardinal consortium; and fits with the royal coronation and British-themed murder mysteries we’re tackling in upcoming podcast episodes. *Her Majesty the Queen Investigates* series by S. J. Bennett has 2 books, with the third book coming out in the United States in September 2023.

Welcome to the sixth episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library.  Each month, we review a new science fiction book and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story.   For this episode, we are reviewing the 2006 science fiction novel  “The Wave” by Walter Mosley. 

In this face-paced story, we meet Errol who has been having a rough few months.  He is unemployed, his ex-wife cheated on him with his friend, and he started receiving calls from an unknown caller in the middle of the night.  While that last one isn’t so bad, it does seem to escalate when the caller refers to Errol by a nickname only his father would.  Yet his father passed away nine years ago! 

After discussing this story we will look into other authors and stories that are similar to “The Wave” and briefly take a look at symbiotic relationships and how that relates to The Wave.

Welcome  to the Page to Screen edition of the Yadkin County Public Library  Podcast, where each month, we’ll be discussing a book that has been  turned into a movie or TV series, as well as the reception of each.   This month we'll be discussing Angela's Ashes, a 1996 memoir by the Irish-American author Frank McCourt, with various anecdotes and stories of his childhood. The book details his very early childhood in Brooklyn, New York, US but focuses primarily on his life in Limerick, Ireland. It also includes his struggles with poverty and his father's alcoholism.  The book was published in 1996 and won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. A sequel, 'Tis, was published in 1999, followed by Teacher Man in 2005.

Last year in April, National Garden Month, we did the Flower Shop Mystery series by Kate Collins and the Hallmark adaptations. Well the page-to-screen element got handled last month with Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swensen series. The gardening topic, though, had to get moved up as some fun stuff needed to happen nearer summer, so there is some exciting stuff coming up soon!

In this beautifully written story, we meet a young girl who is known throughout the land as the adopted daughter of death.  We learn of the strange and tragic way she received this nickname.  She is on a journey to find closure and understanding but sometimes the paths we take lead us to places we didn’t know we needed to see.  After discussing this story, we will look into other authors and books that are similar to “Remote Control” and explore extraterrestrial beings in fiction.

Welcome to the fourth episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library.  Each month we review a new science fiction book and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story.   For this episode, we are continuing our review of The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume One  which is a collection of the best in science fiction stories from the years 1929-1964.

This week, we will meet some of the most prolific science fiction writers of their time; Clifford D. Simak, Judith Merril, Damon Knight, and Stanely G. Weinbaum.  We encounter a man whose fear of leaving home might set society back decades, a pregnant mother whose biggest fear may just come true,  “the king of the world” who lives the loneliest life and lasty meet various new life forms on Mars, one of which is the friendliest sharp shooter.  I did want to add a disclaimer that this book does contain mature content.
