CAPITALISM has an undisputed record of wealth generation, yet it has always functioned under a cloud of moral suspicion. In a culture that venerates Mother Teresa as a paragon of virtue, businessmen sit in stoic silence while their pursuit of profits is denounced as selfish greed. 

Society tells businessmen to sacrifice, to serve others, to “give back” — counting on their acceptance of self-interest as a moral crime, with chronic guilt its penance. Is it any wonder that productive giants from John D. Rockefeller to Bill Gates have behaved as if profit-making leaves a moral stain that only tireless philanthropy can launder but never fully remove? 

It is time the world heard the moral case for laissez-faire capitalism.

In this event celebrating the launch of their book "Equal Is Unfair: America's Misguided Fight Against Income Inequality," Don Watkins and Yaron Brook explain why almost everything Americans have been taught about inequality is wrong. Watkins is a fellow with the Ayn Rand Institute and Brook is the Institute's executive director. The event is moderated by Deroy E. Murdock, syndicated columnist with Scripps Howard News Service and a contributing editor with National Review Online. In recent years, social media have become the focus of debates about free speech, and the issue is rapidly coming to a head. 

The internet promised to bring people closer together and to empower individuals by bypassing publishers and broadcasters who had acted as gatekeepers between speakers and mass audiences. It has enabled new voices to be heard and sparked the formation of new communities and new movements. 

But some of these communities are rife with hatred and bullying, and there are worries that social media is coarsening our political discourse. Many people attribute these ills to too-permissive policies of the social media companies, but others argue that current policies are too restrictive. 

Many from both camps think that these companies have too much power over how we speak and interact, and that more government oversight is needed. 

Where does this leave the idea of free speech? What sorts of speech should be permitted and prohibited online? And who should decide?
