HVOB - Azrael

Austrian electronic minimalists HVOB, or Her Voice Over Beats (I’ve also seen the “B” representing “Boy” or “Band”), consists of Anna Müller and Paul Wallner. The duo offer up Azrael, a pulsating, yet somehow melancholy, banger that I can only hope is an ode to Gargamel’s evil cat Azrael from the Smurfs, but more likely refers to God’s archangel of death from the Quran and Bible. I am the first to admit that I am a sucker for songs that build slowly, even better when they culminate with a vocal line very late into the mix, and Azrael does not disappoint in either regard; the infectious, minimalist rendition drives forward for over four and a half minutes before the ethereal and breathy alto of Müller’s voice offers counterpoint to the echoed drum machine metronome that syncopates throughout the mix. “He lacerates, the heavens like a curtain ready to fight” …she is definitely paying homage to a cartoon cat.

Cat Power - Bad Religion

Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power built her career developing innovative reinterpretations of great songs and in general, my thoughts on artists “covering” songs is predominantly negative—these are usually transparent attempts to ride the coattails of well known classics with flimsy recreations that provide nothing to the listener except a watered-down version of the original. Unfortunately, and more often than not, an artist’s attempt to pay homage to a classic is just an inferior replica. This is not the case with Cat Power; rather than simply performing another artist’s song, Marshall re-interprets it and then turns it on its head. And with Bad Religion, she takes a track from Frank Ocean’s seminal classic, Channel ORANGE, and creates a version that is not only nearly unrecognizable from the original, it is arguably better.

Honorable mention, to These Days, a rare Frank Ocean track that was supposed to be on his never released 2020 album, A Juicy Red Apple, a rarer house record by Skin Up that is sooo catchy, and None of it Matters, the beautiful exit track by my old bandmate Gustav Baller and Dana Boulé.

Wildcookie - Serious Drug

Serious Drug begins with a samba-like, scattershot sample that provides the backdrop for vocalist Anthony Mills’ funky falsetto; his lilting voice lets us know that “cocaine is a serious drug” by name checking artists like Rick James, Amy Winehouse and Robert Downey Jr., among others who have fallen victim to its devastating effects. In addition to being incredibly funky, it’s also admittedly funny as Mills lists cocaine’s debilitating effects with a splash of color, “Smokey Robinson could have wrote way more songs, Richard Pryor didn’t have to catch on fire, and Natalie Cole lookin’ way too old.” The Brighton, UK duo known as Wildcookie consists of producer Freddie Cruger and vocalist Anthony Mills who dropped their experimental album Cookie Dough on Tru Thoughts records in 2011. The lyrics of Anthony Mills blend perfectly with the sophisticated piano melody and offbeat rhythms from producer Freddie Cruger—this catchy track would make anyone rethink a dalliance with Charlie.

Simian - Never Be Alone

Forming as university students from Manchester, England in 2000, the psychedelic electronic pop experimentalists Simian (consisting of James Ford, Jas Shaw, Alex MacNaghten and Simon Lord) made a name for themselves by blending 60s style harmonies and hypnotic Krautrock rhythms with the Brit Pop of their era to form an original and unique sound. 2002’s Never Be Alone ends with Simon Lord screaming “We are your friends, you’ll never be alone again!” over a pulsating, staccato organ synth and a beautiful, lilting falsetto harmony. Simian made two brilliant albums before breaking up but were resurrected in 2006 when Never Be Alone was remixed by the French producers, Justice for a college radio song contest. The song was a giant success and propelled Justice and their label, Ed Banger Records, to stardom. It also contributed to Ford and Shaw getting back together to create a successful dance group of their own called Simian Mobile Disco.
