In this week’s program Rob and Mossy have chosen what they consider to be some of the best voices in pop music history. The program starts with the enigmatic Nina Simone (Break Down And Let It All Out) with her pure diction and growling vocals and concludes with the mellifluous tones of Dean Martin (Arrivederci Roma). Vocal purity and honesty are trademarks of Karen Carpenter (Solitaire), velvet precision from LGBTIQ+ performer, Johnny Mathis (Misty) and the soaring, goose bump tenor of Tony Williams (Only You), lead singer of The Platters. Another LGBTIQ+ favourite is Freddy Mercury who sings a restrained, lovely ballad (Love Of My Life) fronting Queen. Aussie contributions are the King Of Pop from 1969-73, John Farnham (One Is The Loneliest Number) the soulful voice of Doug Parkinson (I’ll Be Around) and Marcia Hines (I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself). An unusual inclusion is the French singer, Edith Piaf with her signature song, Non Je Ne Regrette Rien.

The BRITISH INVASION was a cultural phenomenon of the mid-1960s, when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom and other aspects of British culture became popular in the United States giving rise to “counterculture” on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Australia too eagerly embraced this new sensation. This week’s score includes high profilers such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Zombies, the Kinks, the Hollies, the Animals, Spencer Davis Group and the Searchers. The US group the Buckinghams  was included as a bit of fun. To gain popularity they purposefully adopted a name reflective of the British invasion. The Move who later transitioned into the Electric Light Orchestra, Little Millie, and the Honeycombs complete the playlist.

This week Rob and Mossy have indulged themselves by playing their own choice of songs. Add two great Aussie tracks: ‘This Guy’s in Love With You’ by The Reels and Peter Allen‘s iconic ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ and a smooth rendition of ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ from Art Garfunkel. This week Yesterday Once More pays tribute to 2 exceptional entertainers. Under the theme LET’S REMEMBER we present the music of Miss Peggy Lee and the wonderful Stevie Wonder. Peggy’s prowess included singer / song writer / composer and actor. During her career spanning 7 decades she was nominated for 13 Grammys, had the number 1 hit Manana in 1958, won the 1958 Record and Song of the Year Fever, and was the 1959 Best Contemporary Vocal Performer with Is That All There Is. Little Stevie Wonder was the youngest (at 13 years old) to top the charts with his composition Fingertips. As one of the most successful songwriters and musicians, Stevie Wonder’s composition Part Time Lover made him the first artist to have a number 1 song in 4 different charts in 1985. He holds the record for the most Grammys (25) won by a solo artist, has sold over 100 million records and Rolling Stone lists him as the 9th greatest singer of all time.

ANZAC Day 25 April is recognised as a day of national remembrance. It commemorates Australians and New Zealanders killed in war and honours returned and serving servicemen and women. The date marks the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers, the Anzacs on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. This week Yesterday Once More’s theme Great Southern Lands salutes some of the musical forces from both Australia and New Zealand.

Once again we invite you to a musical feast of great Aussie talent. Heading the program with their international hit ‘Down Under’ is Men At Work. This song more than any piqued overseas interest in the Aussie product ‘Vegemite’. But we had many other great Aussie performers who didn’t make it overseas including Sherbet (Rock Me Gently) and Russell Morris with his divine ‘Sweet Sweet Love’ and New Zealander turned Aussie, influential rocker, Max Merrett (Slipping Away). John Paul Young was a perennial favourite too. He sings his first hit ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ on today’s program. Capturing the essence of Australia’s indigenous issues Goanna performs the classic ‘Solid Rock’. Two forgotten but impressive acts were The Dugites (In Your Car) and Bandstand regular Judy Cannon (That Funny Feeling) who went on to achieve fame in England.

This week’s program COUNTDOWN show cases artists who appeared on the show Countdown and featured on the ‘Countdown 40th Anniversary’ or ‘Countdown Rock’ CD. Countdown was a long running popular Australian music television show broadcast by the ABC from 8th November 1974 until 19th July 1987.  It was created by Michael Shrimpton, Robbie Weekes and record producer and music journalist journalist Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum.  Molly became the face of Countdown introducing the audience to new Australian and International acts via live appearances or the screening of their music videos.  Features of the programme included Molly’s ‘Humdrum’ music news segment, interviews with local and international artists who would sometimes host or co-host an episode. Over the years Countdown was crucial to the success of many leading Australian performers and overseas artists and was instrumental in creating the phenomenon known as ABBA.
