I'll touch base with the project manager to follow up on whether the system is ready for deployment.

touch base這個詞來自於棒球，指觸摸壘包，但在職場上卻是指跟某人聯絡、確認的意思，後面加上with和你要聯絡的人。follow up是跟追某件事情的進度，後面加上on再加上要跟追的事情。Deployment是產品佈署、應用、上線運作的意思，例如軟體、設備的布建也叫做deployment。

Function當名詞是功能的意思，轉為動詞是指「功能正常運作」，例如這台機器can’t function，就是不能正常運作。Function well是運作得很好，Function normally 就是如常的運作。建議、推薦叫做reccommend，後面要加名詞或動詞ing型態。外部叫做external，factor是因素，是否有外部因素，就可以問is there any external factors?

這是一款使用不導電液的浸沒式水冷系統原型。
This is a prototype of an immersion cooling system using non-conductive liquid.

Prototype是機器的原型、樣本的意思。浸沒式冷卻系統可以說immersion cooling system，immersion是浸泡的意思，不能說成immersive，因為immersive是「沉浸式」體驗像VR那種的意思。Conduct這個字原本有引導、導電的意思，conductive是可以導電的，前面加上non表示否定，就變成不導電，所以不導電液叫做non-conductive liquid。

Appropriate 作為形容詞，就是適當、恰當的意思，也可以用suitable替代，表示匹配的、適合的。而平常說的產品型錄、商品目錄的英文叫做catalog。片語According to 是依據、根據的意思，例如根據需求清單是according to the request list，根據某某人的說法是according to somebody，根據規定是according to the rules。

腳輪：caster

這個機櫃可以容納6台伺服器，還有輪子方便移動。
This rack can accommodate six servers and has casters for easy moving.

Rack是層架的意思，像便利商店的架子也叫rack，伺服器一層一層的機櫃也同樣可以稱為rack。容納的英文是accommodate，例如說「這間會議室可以容納80人」，也可以用accommodate，如果是要講機櫃可以裝幾台機器，用hold也可以。Caster跟wheel都是輪子，但是caster是指裝在家具底部方便移動的小輪子，而wheel通常是指像汽車車輪那樣的輪子，所以機櫃的輪子用caster比較恰當。

我們需要可編程邏輯控制器來管理產線的運作。
We need a programmable logic controller (PLC) to manage the operation of the assembly line.

可編程邏輯控制器PLC的功用是用來管理和控制機械和電機的運作，例如管理工廠的生產線。Program是電腦程式，後面字尾able就是可以的意思。Assembly是組裝的意思，把東西組裝起來的產線叫作assembly line，也可以說production line。機械的操作、運行叫作operate，名詞把結尾改成tion，就是oparation。

這個無線充電系統需要滿足電磁相容性測試。
This wireless charging system needs to satisfy the electromagnetic compatibility test.

今天的第一個字比較簡單，satisfy是滿足、達成的意思，satisfy the test 就是滿足測試的要求，也可以說 meet 或pass the test。第二個字電磁的 electromagnectic，可以拆解成前面的 eletro- 電子的，以及後半部 magnectic 磁力的，是從磁鐵 magnet 變化而來。第三個字相容性叫做 compatibility，我們把它拆解成幾個部分，最前面com-是一起的意思，中間-pati-是承受的意思，後面的ability是能力，相容性就是可以一起承受某種情境的能力，所以叫做com-pati-bility。

提前(日期)：bring forward
推出：roll out

如先前討論的，我們必須將生產期限往前提，以準時推出產品。
As discussed, we need to bring forward the production deadline to roll out the model on time.

今天介紹的三個字剛好都是片語。Discuss是討論的意思，as是「如同」，如同之前討論過的，就是as discussed，discussed用過去式。把日期提前可以說bring forward，直接翻譯是「帶到前面」也就是提前的意思。Roll out是指工廠推出產品，roll是滾動的意思，可以想像產線滾動，把產品推出去，就是roll out。在8月5號那一集也有介紹過另外一個字launch，也有類似的意涵，但更強調首次發表的感覺。

頻寬：bandwidth

網路的資料封包會受各種訊號干擾以及頻寬限制。
Network data packets can be affected by signal interferences and bandwidth limitations.

Packet就是一個一個的小包裝，例如一包洋芋片是a packet of chips，封包也是這樣的概念。干擾的動詞叫interfere，要干擾某個東西介系詞用with，to interfere with，那它的名詞是interference。Band是頻段，例如5.9G頻段就叫5.9 gigahertz band。Width是寬度，the width of a table就是桌子寬度，所以頻寬就是bandwidth。

這個系統可支援即時、雙向資料傳輸及遠端控制。
This system allows real-time, bi-directional data transfer and remote control.

Real-time，「真實的時間」就是指即時、當下的，通常都是用來描述資料蒐集，例如即時資料real-time data。雙向叫bi-directional，字首bi-有二的意思，例如binary就是二元、二進位，還有最簡單的bicycle腳踏車可以拆解成bi和cycle，兩個圓圈，就是兩個輪子的意思。雙向也可以簡單說two-way，兩個方向來表達。Remote是遙遠的意思，可以從遙遠的地方控制叫做remote control，電器的遙控器也叫做remote control。
