    Publisher's Summary:
Dr Martin Homer is a GP with a naturally sunny disposition. Honourable, attentive and trusted by all of his patients, Martin has only ever loved one woman - his wife, Sarah.
When his mother dies suddenly, Martin's comfortable life is thrown into complete disarray. After sinking into the black dog of grief and depression, he ascends to new heights in a frenzied, manic high. Now, he's never felt better!
In between riding his new skateboard around the streets at night and self-medicating from his stash at work, the artificially elated and self-entitled Martin crosses paths with Bella, a beautiful and sexual young woman profoundly damaged by trauma of her own.
In Two Minds takes you on a quirky, rollicking journey that unveils the complexities of mental illness with wit and warmth. Gordon Parker's impressive career in psychiatry reveals itself through extremely rich descriptions of depression, bipolar and borderline personality characteristics.

    Rivetting read, educational too.
Interesting read. I found this book rivetting, once I got into it I found it hard to put it down. It's quite a page-turner, as well as educational about some kinds of mental illnesses. I enjoyed the story, the pace , the writing and the education.
Note that Amazon are mistaken in the attribution of the author. Gordon Parker is perhaps a common name, and lends itself to confusion. The author of In Two Minds is an Australian Professor of Psychiatry, who is also a creative writer. It is not the Gordon Parker from northern England. This could be useful to know, as the author really does know what he is talking about in reference to mental illness. He founded The Black Dog Institute, the major educational body about depression and mood disorders in Australia.
A good novel for those with a family member with mental health issues.

    Joan Walker is wonderful.
I loved this book. I dont know if it is the story, or the narrator. But I have truly loved any book that Joan Walker has narrated. I search for her instead of authors! Thats how I found this book. I would have never read it otherwise. But the story itself was also quite good with excellent characters that were believable and sympathetic and infuriating and lovable. It meets all the requirements having a compelling story, interesting and complex characters, humor, the human condition, and evokes emotions in the reader. I would recommend this book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Please let me know anything Joan Walker reads next!!!

Two storylines going on at the same time in this book and I loved that they wind around each other the entire book and then completely combust near the end. Viven Lockhart is in both the present and historical storylines, in the historical storyline she is a retired starlet who has taken up residence in a beautiful Italian home with her husband and his sister and its worth reading the book to find out why the sister is in residence with the couple. In the present day, Lucy has some drama on her own so she decides to get away to this Italian home for a job and escape, but drama always finds you!
An atmospheric mystery with increasingly ominous overtones
Seamlessly weaving back and forth in time, The Silent Fountain by Victoria Fox is a vaguely sinister mystery which takes place in an isolated Tuscan mansion.
Needing to escape from London, Lucy Whittaker is hired to work for reclusive former actress, Vivien Lockhart in Italy. With no internet or cell service at the spooky mansion, Castillo Barbarossa, she is blissfully unaware of whether or not the mistakes from her past have been exposed. Instead of dwelling on her own problems, Lucy is instead extremely curious about what happened to Vivien and why she lives such a solitary life with no company other than her maid, Adalina and groundskeeper, Salvatore. After experiencing a few strange events she cannot explain, Lucy tries researching the history of Castillo Barbarossa and Vivienâs past. Finding little information, she teams up with Max Conti, Vivienâs former housekeeperâs nephew. When her personal life begins to implode, Lucy becomes more determined than ever to unearth the truth about Vivien and what happened at Castillo Barbarossa.
In the mid seventies, Vivien escaped her abusive father and fled to Hollywood where she discovered she had to a pay a pretty steep price for fame and fortune. Just as her life was spiraling out of control, she unexpectedly finds romance with Italian doctor, Giovanni âGioâ Moretti. Deliriously happy yet wary of his younger sister, Isabella, Vivien eagerly accepts his wedding proposal. Her dream wedding is marred by a vindictive act by Isabella and soon the three are ensconced at Castillo Barbarossa. Their initially happy marriage soon falters as Gio works long hours on a secret research project while Vivien grows increasingly frustrated by his refusal to believe Isabella is trying to drive Vivien away.

In 1890, artist Edward Burne-Jones finished a monumental series of paintings inspired by Sleeping Beauty.
Told through the eyes of the five women in his life - wives, daughters and mistresses of famous artists - this is the astonishing story behind that famous painting - a story of love, obsession, scandal and betrayal.

"Kate Forsyth could quite possibly be one the best story tellers of our modern age." (Hook of a Book)

Beauty in Thorns is steeped in history and offers a window into the middle class where love, families, and being an Artist clash
An ARC of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
The release ofÂ'Beauty in Thorns' is one that I've been looking forward to throughout 2017 and I'm delighted that I had the opportunity to read it for review ahead of its release. This book draws again on the historical background of fairy tales, not just their origins but also how those stories were used and told and celebrated throughout history. In that sense,Â'Beauty in Thorns' is unique in its retelling ofÂ'Sleeping Beauty' because it situates the story in amongst people using the story and celebrating it, rather than retelling the story of its origin.Â'Beauty in Thorns' is steeped in history and offers a window into the middle class where love, families, and being an Artist clash.
I found this a really enjoyable book to read, I fell into the prose immediately and enjoyed each page I turned, it was enjoyable and relaxing to read. Different than Forsyth's previous bookÂ'The Beast's Garden' which was a magnificent and necessarily uncomfortable read, I loved the pacing and how the story with all of the characters unfolded. There's a drama to the storytelling that brings the characters and their motivations to life, from making the 'right' choice, to pursuit of one's passion, the foibles and triumphs of love, of families and children and various achievements. I especially loved Forsyth's focus on the lives of women in and how they influence and inspire aspects of history that are often accorded achievements of men. Often this is absent of the reality of the daily life setting which I feel makes the story and those achievements and aspirations all the more compelling. I was especially drawn into the yearning expressed by Lizzie and Georgie who wanted to pursue art for themselves and found it all but impossible.
Although this book is a gentle read, it does deal with difficult topics around mental illness, disordered eating, addiction, the loss of children, and the other realities of health in that era. The book deals respectfully with these topics as well as I am able to judge but I note this for anyone who would rather avoid them.

In South Korea, underground motorcycle gangs attract society's castoffs. They form groups of hundreds and speed wildly through cities at night. For Jae and Dongyu, two orphans, their motorcycles are a way of survival.

Both boys grow up on the streets of Seoul among runaway teenagers, con men, prostitutes, religious fanatics, and thieves. After years of navigating the streets, Jae becomes an icon for uprooted teenagers, bringing an urgent message to them and making his way to the top of the gang. Publisher's Summary:
Charming, quirky, and funny, this oh-so-relatable novel from the bestselling author of Out of Sorts shines a light on the always-complicated je ne sais quoi of every family's relationship.
As Martine and Jacques Le Guennec prepare for their annual family Christmas dinner, Martine reminds her husband to be on his best behavior. Their son Nicolas is bringing his girlfriend, Jeanne, to their home for the first time, and she doesn't want Jacques to scare this one off.
Jacques has always ruled his roost with patriarchal bravado, and he can't help but verbally antagonize everyone - especially the wives of his sons. Jeanne, a strong-willed woman who grew up without a father, clashes with the curmudgeon, and she worries that her boyfriend might be too much like his father.
It's all starting to make Martine question everything about her relationship with her husband. And, though she makes that perfectly clear to him, the old dog is not anxious to learn new tricks.
When Jeanne saves Jacques's life, he begins to realize it may be time to change his ways if he wants to hold on to his wife and keep the family close. But is it too late?

I won this ebook from Goodreads and enjoyed the story
I won this ebook from Goodreads and enjoyed the story. The father of three grown boys tends to speak his mind with his two daughters in law, resulting in hurt feelings and family drama. When the youngest son brings his new fiance to be home for the holidays the mother tells the father to be on his best behavior so he won't scare the girl away. The father and fiance to be do annoy each other. However she ends up saving the father's life when he chokes on a piece of food. After that he seems to realize how obnoxious he is and remembers the things that are important in life, which leads to him changing his ways and a happy family. This was a fast read, the characters and story were believable. It was funny at times and tugged at your heart too. You won't be disappointed in this story.
    Cute, quick read
***I won this book via the Goodreads Giveaway Program. This has not influenced my review***
I found this book to be entertaining. It's light-hearted and a quick read, good for a holiday or vacation.
The story takes place over a year and tells vignette stories about a large family and their family gatherings. Being part of a large family that has holiday gatherings, I could relate to the tension. There is really nothing like waiting for a certain family member to say the wrong thing or to serve food that doesn't match someone's diet. Those eggshells are depicted in the story as the matriarch tries in vain to encourage the patriarch to change his ways.
The family in the story is financially comfortable, so most of the story elements aren't relatable to all families - who eats foie gras? Certainly the attitudes and frustrations translate well to most people.
Speaking of translation, this book is translated from French to English. It's a bit bumpy in parts, but overall it's decent. My only criticism is flow, but it's entirely possible that there are flow issues in the original French.
Being a quick read, there isn't a deep level of character or storyline development.

    Brilliant
In starting this book I originally felt it was going to be very predictable and almost a typical gang land story. It certainly wasn't with many a twist and turn along the way.
Brilliantly narrated by Annie Aldington, I can't wait to begin the second part of the trilogy !
    Gripping
