Keyshawn Watson and T. A. Smith were living life on a rail of razor blades. With targets on their backs from gangsters in the gritty streets of Milwaukee to crafty personnel at the FBI, demise or a lifetime in federal prison seemed to be the only conceivable outcome. However, the assistance of Li Chan, an agent with the bureau gone bad, granted them the advantage needed to level the playing field.
All appears to be well until a series of brutal murders aggravates some of the city's top officials. In turn, pressure is applied to the FBI to conclude its fieldwork and bring them to justice. At the same time, Chan's partner, Greg Daley, discovers her unethical dealings with Keyshawn and decides to embark on a scheme of taking matters into his own hands. Publisher's Summary:
Theresa is desperate for a change. Forced into early retirement, fed up with babysitting her bossy daughter's obnoxious children, she sells her Highgate house and moves to the picture-perfect town of Bellevue-sur-Mer, just outside Nice.
With its beautiful villas, bustling cafes and shimmering cerulean sea, the village sparkles like a diamond on the French Mediterranean coast. Once the hideaway of artists and writers, it is now home to the odd rock icon and Hollywood movie star, and, as Theresa soon discovers, a close-knit set of expats.
There's Carol, the infinitely glamorous American and her doting husband, David; the erstwhile British TV star, Sally; the ferocious Sian and her wayward Australian poet husband; the sharply witty Zoe with her strangely youthful face and penchant for white wine; and the suave Brian, who catches Theresa's eye.
As Theresa settles in to the gentle rhythm of seaside life, she embraces her newfound friendships and freedom. However, life is never quite as simple as it seems, and as skeletons start to fall out of several closets, Theresa begins to wonder if life on the French Riviera is quite as nice as it first appeared.
    Members Reviews:
    fun and unexpected turns
Once I started reading this could not put it down. Started out feeling very frustrated with first character 's relationship with her daughter and the initial switch of Theresa 's decision was a little quick. However, it then became more interesting, with lots of twists and turns and humerous characters. A. fun read.
Celia Imrie, as always, was wonderful as the narrator.
    Not quite good
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
What a waste of a credit. Stick to acting, Celia! The storyline is highly questionable; the main character, a woman who gets to retirement age and still thinks everyone is nice and helpful, is as wet as a weekend in Wales and the characters she meets are mainly caricatures of rather ghastly people. She has a peculiar and very old-fashioned impression of men and lets herself be walked all over by her dreadful daughter and granddaughters. If you want to read about a drippy posh woman who goes to live in France and never meets a French native this is the book for you.
What will your next listen be?
Something with more teeth, maybe the book about the Salem witches.
What three words best describe Celia Imries voice?
    No.
What character would you cut from Not Quite Nice?
The performance was fine as the author is an actress.
    Any additional comments?
Stick to books written by people with writing talent.
Please stick to the day job Celia
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Better writing
What was most disappointing about Celia Imries story?
    Thin storyline and clunky writing
Would you listen to another book narrated by Celia Imrie?
Narrated by - yes, written by - no
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Brought back nice memories of NICE
    A joyful entertainment
What made the experience of listening to Not Quite Nice the most enjoyable?
This is a fascinating and joyful book. The characters are keenly observed and most are larger than life . Nevertheles,s the incredible twists and turns of the plot make for good entertainment
What does Celia Imrie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Celia Imrie gives a spirited reading and lends credence to all her characters.

History is story telling. But some stories remain untold.
In fifteenth-century Italy, Paolo Uccello recognizes the artistic talent of his young daughter, Antonia, and teaches her how to create a masterpiece. The girl composes a painting of her mother and inadvertently sparks an enduring mystery.
In the present day, a copyist painter receives a commission from a wealthy Chinese businessman to duplicate a Paolo Uccello painting. Together, the painter and his teenage daughter visit China, and in doing so they begin their escape from a tragic family past.
In the twenty-second century, a painting is discovered that's rumored to be the work of Paolo Uccello's daughter. This reawakens an art historian's dream of elevating Antonia Uccello, an artist ignored by history because of her gender.
Stories untold. Secrets uncovered. But maybe some mysteries should remain shrouded.
    Members Reviews:
    A touch incomplete
The idea of this book is good having 3 separate stories from different eras with a common link would probably play out better on film.
For me the oldest section featuring Antonia Ucchello was the most interesting part. I enjoyed her Father Paolo teaching and explaining his process to her. It seems a shame that none of her works are known to have survived. I would have liked the book to have concentrated more on Antonia because the other two stories did not stand out as well. I could feel the Author Anne Charnocks enthusiasm re the older story and I found myself looking forward to Antonias next section as I read & listened on.

    Absolutely loved this book!
Maybe because of my own recent family situation of loss and trials I felt connected to this book but regardless it was well written and touched my heart. It also helps that I'm a suckered for an English accent and all the lingo that goes with. Thank you Matt for writing this book.
    Loved it
I really enjoyed this book, it's not what I would usually choose but after reading other's reviews I decided to give it a go.
It is a poinient story, but with humour (I found myself laughing out loud on a number of occasions) and a deeper message about what home really is.
I would definitely recommend this to others.

    Members Reviews:
    Enjoyable story.
I really love Post Apocalyptic and prepper stories, so was really eager to read this. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this! I absolutely loved dual POVs!
The story is told from the POV of a man and his step daughter. The man considers himself a prepper but during the apocalypse non of his plans go right and he ends up going through multiple plans whilst trying to survive. He also has to deal with a step daughter who tries his patience at every step. He does his best with what he has and I loved that about these characters!
The other POV was from the mans wife! She is on a hostage rescue op in Yemen when the Apocalypse happens and as the blurb says, "Cut off from civilization and deep within insurgent-held territory, Walker and her team must team up with old enemies to defeat a merciless invasion forcea foe thats already mopping up their worldwide conquest." must do what she needs to to get home to her daughter and husband.
The characters are all well written and developed. It's a refreshing change to have a character that's a prepper, but he isn't rightly prepared for the end of the world. His plans don't go as planned and non of his fancy equipment will help him. He needs to survive on his wits and knowledge! It's a nice change from all the other books where the preppers know everything and it all falls into place.
The plot was fast paced and action packed. We are brought into the story basically right from the start and it doesn't let up! The writing was descriptive and engaging and I really enjoyed everything about it.
Kevin Clay seems to be narrating a lot of Post Apocalyptic books, but he also seems to have the voice for it. His tone is smooth and he has a no nonsense tone when reading the aftermath of the EMP. He is easy to listen to I always enjoy his narration.
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affects my thoughts.*
There's No Geneva Convention Covering Armageddon
First, let me start of saying this. I know this is science fiction, but I think the publisher blurb describing Dixon as a prepper must have come from Dixon himself. Like they asked him "How would you describe yourself" and Dixon goes "Hmm, a ruggedly handsome prepper, ready for the end of the world". And the publisher goes "OK, we'll go with 'prepper'". In no universe can I imagine anyone, let alone an end of the world preparing prepper who would willingly give up their guns and step into a FEMA camp run by a instantly identifiable by Dixon as a suspect looking Department of Homeland Security "person" ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE APOCALYPSE.

    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio

    Publisher's Summary:
Sophie Stark begins her filmmaking career by creating a documentary about her obsession, Daniel - a college basketball star. But when she becomes too invasive, she finds herself the victim of a cruel retribution. The humiliation doesn't stop her. Visionary and unapologetic, Sophie begins to use stories from the lives of those around her to create movies. And as she gains critical recognition and acclaim, she risks betraying the one she loves most.
Told in a chorus of voices belonging to those who knew Sophie best, The Life and Death of Sophie Stark is an intimate portrait of an elusive woman whose monumental talent and relentless pursuit of truth reveal the cost of producing great art.
    Critic Reviews:
"North's engrossing second novel portrays with painful clarity the life of a flawed but highly talented artist." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Well written but terrible story!
I love the writing but the story was so sad and depressing with no real point. The performance, though, was great!
Creating realistic art in a fictional world
I wish there was a search button for reviews so I could check the 3000 reviews of this book and see who else read the main character as high functioning on the autism spectrum. It seemed obvious to me as I listened but no reviews I checked mention this.
It frustrated me once I realized a large premise of the book would be people talking about how they never understood what Sophie was thinking. All this while the author put together this interesting collection of voices who each directly mention huge red flags left me feeling cheated of resolution.
I also docked a star because the movies described never came off the page and became real to me. It's hard to write about original creative work in a way that feels authentic and engaging (Wylding Hall pulls it off; Juliet, Naked does not) and it didn't quite work here.

    A Very Good Read
This novel is an especially good one written by Helen Topping Miller. We are introduced to a distinguished family from Montevallo, Alabama whose fortunes still have not recovered from the devastation of the War Between the States. As a result, they head out West to Texas to try and make a decent living. Where they are faced with the reality that being someone of a good name isn't enough for survival in the wilds of Texas. However, will they bend their distinctive mores to blend in with their new surroundings or not? That is the main issue that drives the plot of the novel. The mindset of all the characters in this novel are so well developed that the reader really feels like they know all the members of the Channing family intimately. And their struggles really seem relevant even today. For we are presented with an unhappy marriage on the part of Harriet and the dilemma of Jeb as he struggles with his love for a wealthy girl in the form of Monty Summers and his admiration for the spunky and self-reliant Peggy MacGuire. Vicky is especially charming with her piano and singing skills. And we have the highly distinguished but sickly Dickson Channing and his subtly strong wife.
    Five Stars
    Very good !!!
    Post civil war novel
I read this book and several more by Helen Topping Miller many years ago. I still reread them every so often as this author writes in a very appealing way about life down south following the American Civil War. This particular story takes a family from down south and has them move to Texas following the war. Ms. Miller always has a strong young heroine who does a lot of growing up during the story. Her women are often portrayed as strong individuals. I really liked all Helen Topping Miller's post civil war and Revolutionary war books.
