    Five Stars
    Outstanding !!!
    very interesting
My only criticism was that the book is too short. I was really hoping the author could have recollected more info on this sad time in history. Nevertheless, it gives you a good insight on how nazism propaganda changed people and great friendships. A good read.

deserved to be an award winning
The Limonov is the type of book that stays in your mind long after the book is closed. The first half of the book is absoletely riveting and depicting Limonov's life start and the unexpected twists that led him to US where he became a writer. It helps us understand the blocks that defines Limonov's personality. The fact that the book is talking about Limonov whom certainly very few people know ( never heard of him before) is not of big importance here. Each of us can find in Limonov something of one's own personality, of one's own narcicism, of one's own attempt to succeed and be recongnized.
The second part of the book doesn't get as close to human soul and secrets as the first part, but it gives a good picture of URSS/ Russia historical path, and how Limonov's political opinions and small history fits into Russia's last 40 years history with a big H.
I loved that book, but I must admit I love Carrere 's work.
    Limlnov
Superbe journalistique work! Thrilling story. Mathieu Carrere is a true investigation journalist and Limonov a fascinating and colorful character. A story to remember
The subject is not worth 400 pages
I can understand a 400 page-book about Mozart, but Salieri does not deserve the same effort on writer's (or reader's) part. Now, there is something about Ivory Tower intellectual's fascination with people who brushed with criminality, and somehow feel authentic. The problem with Limonov (as a character in this book, not that I ever met a real one) is that he comes across as completely fake. Being a second-rate talent, Limonov had to re-invent himself as a person - something that Brodsky, for example, never had to do. Which brings me to the point of this review - while Carrere seems to believe that Limonov was the best at everything he did, he comes across as a perennial runner-up at everything he did, for which he compensated with sound barbs at those who were better. A shorter book about someone like this would probably work, but reading so much about mediocrity (and nasty at that) is not, in the opinion of this reviewer, worth it

    Members Reviews:
Came for the narrator, stayed for the story
I really enjoyed this book. Ill be honest; I initially only bought it because Iggy Toma was the narrator and he is a fav of mine . However, I found I really enjoyed the story too. I think the fact the Iggy brought such life to these characters is what really made this for me. This is the second book I have read/listened to from this author and both have been really good. This is the story of Caleb and Bradley. It is told from Bradleys POV. Bradley is a working class, insecure, bisexual player that hides his insecurities behind meaningless relationships with men and women. He is a self described a**hole but feels he has to hurt them before they hurt him. Then a random act occurs and he meets Caleb. Bradley believes Caleb is everything he is not and of course falls for him, hard. Through a series of random acts much drama occurs, including a violent attack on Caleb. Bradleys journey of self-discovery is really a pleasure to experience. The dialogue is great; heartfelt, sweet and witty. It is not a perfect book as it does stretch the imagination at time and Caleb sometimes comes off as overly formal. But overall, a really enjoyable and sweet story.
Story and narration didn't add up for me
    Any additional comments?
This is one of those situations where the story and the narration just don't add up for me. Which is stunning to me as I normally love Iggy Toma's narration. However, this time around I really did not like the voice he used for main character Caleb. To me he sounded like a creepy Hal from 2001: a Space Odyssey. It just...every time he spoke I cringed. It didn't help that every time the character opens his mouth he sounds horribly pompous and pretentious.
    Examples:
"But I owe you honesty as you've just given me your truth..."
"I too sense that love is blooming right here and right now."
"I love a man in a white t-shirt Bradley, but it is going to have to go as well."
"Your muscles never cease to amaze and arouse me." Caleb smiled as he ran his fingertips across my chest.
"Not so fast Mr. Zelder"..."now you may lie on your stomach on the bed."
Story-wise maybe it's that the whole thing is from the POV of Bradley, who is a self-confessed asshole. And boy, is he.
Bradley is a bit of a dichotomy.

Along the way she falls in love with the residents of the Platte Lodge for Children, none more so than 10-year-old Robby O'Brien, a freckle faced, earnest little boy who was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome and who, upon the death of his grandfather, finds himself alone in a scary world.

    The Things We Never Said
I was disappointed; the story was lacklustre, it lost my interest on more than a few occasions. Despite some decent writing and insights, the overall experience for me, was pretty dismal.

I have never written a review of an audio book before but this was a lovely easy to listen to story. There is not much I can say about this story as it says it all in the product description and without giving to much away. It captures your attention within the first chapter. The Best friend...she seems like fun!
    Any additional comments?
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
I Honestly loved this story! This is a story mostly about dealing with grief and getting passed losing someone you love. I think a lot of people can relate to this. First we have Ross a psychiatrist who is enlisted to help Lila...a mental patient who has just given up entirely on life...Both these characters have lost there spouses...as Ross starts to make progress with Lila...he uncovers a deeper conspiracy to actually destroy Lila's life and has to intervene to help her....LiIa had made some questionable decisions, but they were made in love...and as Ross gets her to open up, he finds the strength to heal also. This was a great listen..I listened to it all in one setting and would highly recommend it!!!
    LOVE, LOSS, AND CLOSURE
Psychiatrist Dr. Ross Reeves loses his wife, Sarah, and cannot move on~Lila loses her husband, Blake, and tries to take her life. With many twists, turns, and surprises~they, along with several others, help each other heal. Likable characters (my favorite~Maddie), superb narration, and a page turning story. Highly recommended...
    The Missing Year
This was a good book. There are lies, deceits and conspiracies but the main story is of grief and how it affects us.Lila is a grieving widow that ends up in the care of a psychaitrist because she has refused to speak for the last year.
Ross, the Dr in question, has also suffered loss. Can he help her?Can they help each other?
Julie Knippen does a wonderful job narrating this book.
"I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast or MalarHous
    The Missing Year Review
The Missing Year falls somewhere in the middle of all the audiobooks I've listened to. It wasn't my favorite nor was it my least. It sort of had a heavy lingering effect of grief.

David Vann's dazzling debut Legend of a Suicide was reviewed in over a 150 major global publications, won 11 prizes worldwide, was on 40 "best books of the year" lists, and established its author as a literary master. Since then, Vann has delivered an exceptional body of work, receiving, among others, best foreign novel in France and Spain, a California Book Award, and the mid-career St. Francis College Literary Prize. Aquarium, his implosive new audiobook, will take Vann to a wider audience than ever before.
Twelve-year-old Caitlin lives alone with her mother - a docker at the local container port - in subsidized housing next to an airport in Seattle. Each day, while she waits to be picked up after school, Caitlin visits the local aquarium to study the fish. Gazing at the creatures within the watery depths, Caitlin accesses a shimmering universe beyond her own. When she befriends an old man at the tanks one day, who seems as enamored of the fish as she, Caitlin cracks open a dark family secret and propels her once-blissful relationship with her mother toward a precipice of terrifying consequence.
In crystalline, chiseled, yet graceful prose, Aquarium takes us into the heart of a brave young girl whose longing for love and capacity for forgiveness transforms the damaged people around her. Relentless and heartbreaking, primal and redemptive, Aquarium is a transporting story from one of the best American writers of our time.
    Members Reviews:
Intense and Raw Coming of Age Story!
Raw, evocative, fierced and relenteles are some of the adjectives that have been used to describe this book. Aquarium can also be described as a coming of age story, which are not particularly rare, but I am sure this is by far the most emotionally intense I've ever read.
This is my first novel by Alaskan-born author David Vann, who does an amazing job at recreating the story of Caitlin, an earnest 12 year-old girl that lives with Sheri, her single mom - a docker at the local container port - in subsidized housing next to an airport in Seattle.
Caitlin now on her early 30s, narrates and looks back on her life with a sense of longing and nostalgia. Reading her story helps us remember the limited perspective a child has on life and how terryfing it can be to be at the mercy of the adults that surround you and take decisions on your behalf.
The story centers around Caitlin daily visits to the Seattle Aquarium. She goes there every day after school to wait for her mother to pick her up after her shift is over. She is fascinated by the fish and dreams of becoming an ichthyologist in Australia or Indonesia. The aquarium becomes a magical place, with all its beautiful creatures, and provides a wonderful setting that allows her to escape the harsh realities of her life, her loneliness and her mother's bitterness and anger.
Aquarium raises many issues, but at its core it questions how our parents and the choices they made shaped who we are and how we defined ourselves.
Aquarium also addresses the inextricably connection between poverty and happiness and how it can affect every aspect of a person's existence.

As Tina is ironing, she questions things and then her mind wonders with each item she irons.
What ever happened to perma-press? Tina asks herself as she is ironing a linen pair of capris, and is having difficulty getting the wrinkles out. She goes through the history of fabrics, from perma-press, to wrinkle free, to natural fibers, to those that today need ironing, just when life should be simpler.
As Tina is ironing her husband's dress shirt, she questions why her husband is steadfast on wearing a business suit with a dress shirt and tie in his stock broker business.
