Number-one international best-selling author Cathy Kelly returns with a heartwarming new novel
Meet the women of Delaney Gardens, a bustling suburban village in the outer reaches of Dublin. There's Cassie, who's spent her married life doing everything right for her children, husband, and mother-in-law yet feels so exhausted that "wine o'clock" comes a little earlier each afternoon. There's her sister, Coco, who runs a vintage dress shop but has avoided the complications of romantic commitment. Watching over them is their grandmother, Pearl, who, despite caring deeply for her family, is contending with a long-buried secret. And then there's Elsa, the polished face of daytime TV, who's triumphed over demons before but is now facing her toughest battle yet. At every crossroad these women face, listeners are taken deeper into the heart of what it means to be a family.

    Sisterly Love
Always a great favourite of mine, I have for over 12 years always eagerly awaited each new book by Cathy Kelly and Between Sisters certainly does not disappoint. Although the beginning I felt was a little hard to get into, it soon became such that I could not put it down. The main characters Coco and Cassie are two sisters who have been damaged but their mother leaving them when they were very small. They are as different as chalk and cheese , Cassie vying for her husbands time against her conniving mother-in-law and the beautiful Coco running her vintage clothing shop and continually thinking of her great love ,also out of her life.. Lovely characters in this book you can almost see them. I cannot imagine many readers not liking this latest offering from Cathy Kelly , and like myself ,becoming entwined in the woman of Delaney Square. A very good read.
    Phoned It In
Typically Cathy Kelly's books are good reads with interesting sub-plots and well developed characters. Not so with "Between Sisters". The plot is predictable, the characters not particularly endearing or compelling (in fact, they're whiny and boring), and the end result is a book that is nothing more than a yawn fest. I had to force myself to finish it. I have been a Cathy Kelly fan for years, but this book seems like she just phoned it in to knock another one off. There are much better Cathy Kelly books out there.
I found the book to be slightly disjointed, and ...
I found the book to be slightly disjointed, and while in all fairness the plot did pick up in the end. In the first half of the book i found it very difficult to understand which character was which and to connect with the characters.
    A must read.
Another great story from Cathy. A story where once you start it is so hard to put down until the finish and a beautiful ending to the story. I really think this was one of the best. Looking forward to the next one please Cathy.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Tom Perrotta's Little Children, a "mesmerizing, unsparing" (Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia!) debut novel about a wealthy man who has reached a crossroads after a lifetime of repression and denial, sending him - and his family - into a slow spiral toward a total breakdown.
When Michael sees his wife, Nancy, chatting with a stranger at a party, his intuition tells him that he's watching her with the man she should have married. He quickly begins a campaign to replace himself within his own family with this other man - who, to him, is worthier, better, and kinder - all so his faithful wife; his beautiful teenage daughter, Ryan; and his young son, Max, can live the lives they deserve.
While Michael pursues this man's friendship, Ryan goes through a period of sexual awakening and rebellion and distances herself from her family, and the quiet, weak Nancy becomes increasingly befuddled and frustrated by the behaviors of her husband and daughter. As tension and uncertainty build in their home, the James family slowly unravels.
With the quiet intensity of the film American Beauty and the emotional sensitivity of Lorrie Moore, Taylor Larsen creates a powerful and moving story about the fracturing of a family and its descent into chaos.

Summary of The Vegetarian by Han Kang | Includes Analysis
    Preview:
Set in South Korea, The Vegetarian by Han Kang tells the story of Yeong-hye, an ordinary woman who decides to stop eating meat. The novel - part satire, part surreal drama, part horror story - provides accounts of Yeong-hye's vegetarianism and eventual anorexia nervosa from the perspectives of her domineering husband, lecherous brother-in-law, and concerned sister.
In part one, titled "The Vegetarian," Mr. Cheong tells the story of his "unremarkable" wife's breakdown. Mr. Cheong marries Yeong-hye because he believes she won't challenge his orderly way of life. Yeong-hye proves to be a hardworking, undemanding wife. Her only quirk is that she doesn't like to wear a bra, which disturbs Mr. Cheong.
Early one morning, Mr. Cheong finds Yeong-hye standing motionless in front of the refrigerator. She tells him that she's had a dream. The next morning, she's there again, this time busily stuffing meat into trash bags. When Mr. Cheong asks her what she's doing, Yeong-hye again replies that she's had a dream.

Fantastic summary on an incredible story by Han Kang
An incredible story is created by Han Kang and also summarized thoroughly in this book. It begins with a brief retelling of each of the three parts of the authorâs book, from how the main character Yeong-hye begins her vegetarianism and anorexia nervosa stage, to how her self-abandonment leads to the ending of her marriage and that of her sister In-hye, to In-hyeâs desperate attempt to take care of her younger sister to no avail, until the conclusion of the story. My quick digest of the key points may not do this story justice, but this summary book provides greater details and analyses of the characters and their relationships to help readers understand the story better. The most notable relationship is between Yeong-hye and her own body, and the explanation of why she decides to abandon her body, or animal self. Indeed, after all the analyses and descriptions, forsaking oneâs own physicality, which has only been treated as dehumanized object, seems to be the only way for an abused woman in patriarchal Korea to protest against society. The summary appears to be covering everything in the story, but one should read Han Kangâs book to enjoy the multiple styles of narrative the author uses for the bookâs major fragments.
There is method to her madness
The Vegetarian by Han Kang is the story of a Korean woman, Yeong-hye, an ordinary woman who decides to stop eating meat. This decision provokes reactions from those around her; her abusive, controlling husband; her manipulative brother-in-law; her submissive sister; all of which are told from the particular characterâs point of view. The novel chronicles what appears on the surface to be one womanâs descent into madness, but is in fact, a critique of Koreaâs male-dominated society and how two women, Yeong-hye and her sister, cope with it in different ways.

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of a New England summer when past and present collide, Mystic Summer is a gorgeous novel about looking back, moving forward, and the beauty that blooms when fate intervenes.

Making the story easy to follow, McFadden provides a variety of accents for Maggie's Boston friends and co-workers, as well as her family back home in Mystic, Connecticut.... Mystic Summer captures the magic of summer, and McFadden's narration is spot-on." (AudioFile)

Not a deeply moving storyline. No surprise ending. Won't keep you on the edge of your seat. But it's easy and somewhat interesting and entertaining.

    One of the better ones
Whilst I like the lightness of the narrator's voice he really does need to learn local pronunciations - perhaps someone local could proof listen before publication! It would be good if he had more character identification as well - like the other books before it he is "reading" rather than "acting" as good narrators seem to be able to do.
Plot wise, there is always the bit of gratuitous sexual violence in there again - that really could be left out for me but not as bad as in previous books.
Because of the location I hang in there with the Goodhew novels and this was one of the better ones for me.
Another excellent book by Alison Bruce
I have to say I'm a great fan of Alison Bruce's books. Helped enormously by knowing Cambridge. I can't wait for the next instalment. Lovely complicated personalities and great story line. Thank you.
    Incredibly boring
I cannot believe all the glowing reviews for this book, however I have just skimmed through the reviews again to find out if I was missing something - only to see that the majority of the reviews are 'written in exchange for being given a free copy of the book'. However unbiased one tries to be - if the book is a gift there is bound to be a gentle attitude towards it. (Reviews on Amazon)
I am really struggling to latch onto this book, the characters are hardly worth getting to know - certainly not particularly likeable, the story is stodgy and very very boringly written. I can hardly be bothered to waste any more time on it, I am now on chapter 14 so have to weigh up the time lost against any possible gain should it become interesting. I will give it a little longer. ...... I decided after drafting this review to skip on towards the end just to find out who and why. It wasn't worth it!
Among the best UK crime writers
Would you listen to The Promise again? Why?
Although I have a long memory, there are certain books in some genres that I am drawn to re-read. I enjoy reading of the evolution of characters and how in the UK, the police are faring with PC, hi-tech, unbelievably bad promotions (which happen less frequently in fiction than real life) and the way the political system has colluded with and betrayed the forces. The author has racked up a good solid performance with this work, brilliantly read, making want more.

Things weren't supposed to turn out this way. My story should have been different. Happier. Maybe in another life, it would've been. But, life isn't a fairy tale, and the good guys don't always win.
I didn't mean to cause anyone pain. I just wanted to end my own. The letter, his words - crushed me. It seemed as if there was no other way out. Nothing can change what happened, and nothing could have prepared me for what came after those two words: Dear Adam.

    Sadly beautiful
This is such a powerful tale of how words, actions, ignorance, hate, selfishness, heartbreak, feelings unworthiness, and a weak support system can destroy something so d@mn beautiful.
A heartbreaking tale but a lovely bittersweet ending. -teary eyed smile-
Brad Rakushin, his voice was mesmerizing as Conner Adam.
I'm going to go hug and kiss my son now.
    Important & touching story
This story is incredibly important for anyone who has ever lost a loved one. This book puts a human face on suicide, specifically among the LGBTQ community. It is so wonderfully performed and narrated by Brad Rakushin. Rakushin elevates the writing to a new level that tears at the heart and makes you feel like you're really being told the story from the lead character himself. I was transfixed by his emotion, and feel like I went on this difficult journey with him. Highly, highly recommend. And huge kudos to them for including the suicide prevention information; the Trevor Project is a terrific resource for those who struggle with grief and/or suicide.
Very Powerful & Moving Book. Must Download.
Where does Dear Adam rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of my all-time favorites. Very compelling.
What about Brad Rakushins performance did you like?
Brad Rakushin brought the story to life like no other person could. A great performance that will not soon be forgotten.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I could not stop listening. It is a very important story and I felt compelled to listen to the whole story in one sitting. It really shows that reminds us that it often very difficult to be a gay person in today's society -- and its even harder for kids in their teens.
    Any additional comments?
Heartbreaking story, full of important life lessons. Highly recommend 5+ stars.
This book tore at my heart.
Dear Adam. And with that Adam's world changed. In this book Adam tells us his story, a story weaved over the passage of time. From friendship, to first love, happiness, pain and loss. A feeling that you can't go on. In the end, it's one of triumph and learning to move on.
A story I will never forget!

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Heartbreaking and timely novel by Afghan-American author follows one man's journey from New York to the clutches of the Taliban and into an unintentional polygamist union. "He is picking up the same bags with the same clothes Lisa packed and folded a year ago. He wishes he were like his clothes, untouched by external forces." Family man Nick Blake is living in New York City and working for the United Nations. Born and raised in the United States with broad knowledge of the Afghan culture, he is living the All-American life with his wife, Lisa, and their children. His life is turned upside down when, while on a diplomatic mission to Afghanistan, Nick is kidnapped and finds himself in the clutches of the Taliban.
Omar Farhad's debut novel Honor and Polygamy follows Nick throughout his eighteen months in Afghanistan and the devastating and unexpected turns his life takes, as he learns the true meanings of home, history and culture. After being held captive for several months, Nick is forced to marry the sixteen-year-old Shaista. Although he cannot forget his beloved wife and children back home, he finds himself falling in love with his second wife and, overwhelmed with guilt, is torn between his old life and his new one. Honor and Polygamy is far from simply a captivating fiction story, but is also a brilliant commentary on the United States' situation with Afghanistan. Farhad expresses his views on both the political and the cultural sides of Afghanistan.
Politically, he is predicting how he feels the war will ultimately end, while culturally, he shows readers not familiar with Afghanistan that the 35-year-old war has created a population, which is uneducated, disloyal, and without identity. The United States and many other nations have continuously disrupted Afghanistan with no clear political objectives, and, in his novel, Farhad explores the consequences of these actions.
    Members Reviews:
    Riveting and Eye-opening Debut Novel
Omar Farhad's book "Honor and Polygamy" is riveting and should be a must read. We Westerners have so little understanding of the Middle East and Farhad's depiction of the frightening situation in Afghanistan is something most of us don't want to know. Having just re-read James Michener's "Caravans" about Afghanistan in the mid nineteen-forties, this wrenching tale of the country today points up how little we understand of the culture of the area, and the terrible danger its people deal with on not just a daily, but an hourly basis. I hope to read more of Omar Farhad's writing in the near future. Impressive debut novel, without a doubt.
    Yes, read it. ;)
This is an amazing story that simultaneously entertains and educates you. I think the author did a great job of putting things that most of us here in the US have never experienced or fully understood into an easy story telling flow. I didn't get completely hooked in the first chapter but I did after that. It's totally worth the read and the story is unlike any books I've read before.
    Captivating, Riveting & Timely
I found this book truly captivating, riveting and timely. It offers the reader a view into the culture and traditions of the Afghan people not seen on the nightly news. It touches on the ever widening gap between the old traditions and the new generations lack of respect for honor and loyalty.
