    Publisher's Summary:
A controversial move sets off a dangerous feud.
Jennie McGrady's Labor Day weekend promises relaxation and fun when she visits a fur farm run by family acquaintances. Jennie's anticipation of the trip grows when she learns Scott Chambers, an old friend, has taken a job at the farm. But on her first night there, the mink are released from a neighboring farm, and Jennie fears the sometimes-volatile Scott may be behind it.
Scott's participation in extreme animal rights activities is in the past - or so he claims. Jennie wants to believe him, but his arrival just before the mink release seems more than coincidence. And when Bob Sutherland, the affected farmer, goes missing, suspicion falls on Scott.
Aleshia Sutherland makes no secret of her involvement with the radical animal rights movement and has been kicked out of her parents' home because of it. Does she despise her father's line of work so much that she would hurt him? Can Jennie look beyond her personal feelings to find the truth?

    Never married?
A fitting conclusion to adventurous lives. Darkness, despair and no end of exciting incidents. Then a final chase across Europe towards that ever unlikely happy ending? The review of their lives bringing joy to both them and us, their readers. Reading these books in my teens brought me an appreciation of travel and living in foreign lands, which led me to live in France and the USA. Thank you, Mr Wheatley for these wonderful books!
Pro-fur propaganda disguised as a novel
I picked this book up at a library sale when I saw it had an animal rights theme. When I got around to reading it, I was somewhat surprised to see that it actually attempts to defend the barbaric fur trade. See, the biblegod gave us animals to use. That means it's perfectly okay to kill thousands of them every year just for a frivolous fashion accessory. Fur farmers are just nice folks who happen to kill animals for a living. It's not as if they could choose to do something else, right? As for animal rights activists, they're all unhinged "terrorists" who wantonly commit murder and mayhem just because they love attention. Not because they actually care about animals or anything like that. Give me a break. If the author had bothered to talk to some animal rights supporters, instead of just the fur commission, she'd realize most of them are sane, rational people who don't want to see animals suffer unnecessarily. (And in this day and age, fur is absolutely unnecessary!) Believe it or not, most of them care about people, too. Those activists that do commit illegal acts--a VERY small percentage--go out of their way to make sure that no humans will be harmed. And another thing, activists use red paint in their anti-fur demos. Paint, not actual blood. That means there is no killing animals or robbing blood banks. This trash wasn't even worth the 50 cents I paid for it. It's gone into the recycling bin.

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
At an artistic Garden of Eden, one writer finds that serpents lurk in every corner.
The mansion is called Illyria, but for the writers and artists who flock there each summer, it may as well be paradise. Away from family, friends, and ordinary responsibilities, the creative spirit can flower, nurtured by the company of other artistic souls. Janet Belle Smith's husband doesn't understand why she can't write at home - or really, for that matter, why she must write at all - but for Janet, the reason is clear. Only in Illyria can she be herself.
But as the writer mingles with her fellow artists - including a Marxist novelist, a Beat poet, a wild-man sculptor - she begins to fear that the "real" her isn't who she expected, and Illyria is not the peaceful kingdom it appears to be. This creative paradise is rotting from inside out, and if Janet doesn't move quickly, she'll be trapped in the rubble when the walls come tumbling down.

Other reviewers have loved it, me ... not so much
The audio sample seemed well done, and I was curious about writers' colonies, so I figured I'd apply an expiring credit towards this one. The only work I'd read of Lurie's I'd read, I liked, though it was non-fiction: Familiar Spirits: A Memoir of James Merrill and David Jackson.
Initially, the book held promise with its description of the grounds, staff and attendees. Then, the soap-opera-like tone set in, where I had trouble keeping the characters apart, not really liking any of them, including the protagonist. Had this been a library book, I might've thrown in the towel, but it's relatively short, and well written, so I persevered. The final scene made a good point, but honestly, I felt it rather a slog getting there.
Audio narration fit well, no complaints on that score.

    Publisher's Summary:
Cambridge is sweltering during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet--"lost" on the left, "found" on the right--and the two never seem to balance. Jackson has never felt at home in Cambridge and has a failed marriage to prove it.
Surrounded by death, intrigue, and misfortune, his own life haunted by a family tragedy, he attempts to unravel three disparate case histories and begins to realise that in spite of apparent diversity, everything is connected...

    Enid Blyton meets Agatha Christie
What disappointed you about Case Histories?
Two-dimensional characters that put me in mind of the Famous Five when they were all grown up. Twee.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something that doesn't feel like an English Public School creative writing project. And something where at least a few characters are interested in something other than sex.
What does Susan Jameson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She caught the accents of the Famous Five types beautifully.
    Any additional comments?
I'm sure lots of people enjoy this kind of style, but it really didn't work for me. I need a fighting chance of at least respecting one of the characters, and I really do need them to come across as real people.
    Fantastic narration
I don't think I've ever listened to a better narrated book. Susan Jameson does an excellent job, unlike anything I've heard before.
Regards the story, there are three parallel stories loosely interwoven via the private detective Jackson Brodie. But the chapters are all from different perspectives of the various characters, so you get to know much more of their individual thoughts and feelings this way.
Nearly everything is wrapped up at the end, but I still have some questions I want answering, so am looking forward to discussing this with my book group in a couple of weeks!
    Awful Narration
I love Kate Atkinson, but the narrator's tone, in attempting to interpret, just makes every sentence sound sneering, bored and sarcastic. Couldn't listen, once I worked out what the problem was. Awful.
    unusual interesting kept me listening
story in overllapping chapters makes interesting read with strong characterization enjoyed reading until end ...a bit to much detailed sex for my liking ..didn't excpect it in a mystery Novel but will look forward to next Jackson Brodie
    Quite Dickensian
Good wide ranging interwoven stories which are all perplexing but satisfactorily concluded makes this a more taxing read than the normal detective story. Worth it but don't expect an easy read.

Based on the incredible true story of life, love, and never giving up.
    Members Reviews:
    An eye opener!
Where does My Name is Bryan rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I have listened to a bazillion audiobooks since that's where I do most of my reading anymore. I can't rank these things.
What did you like best about this story?
One of the most compelling things in the story--for me--was that it's based on real life. It was quite an eye opener for me, as I lived Bryan's experiences with him and his epically awesome wife Nedra. I'm a positive person, so I really related with his view of life. Such a huge thing for someone his age to do. I would only have asked for a little more of what those thoughts were as he lay on that beach for so many hours.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I loved his time in the hospital with the other guys. It was great to see the prankster things they pulled, showing that their injuries hadn't consumed their lives. It was different, yes. Very different. But it would be easy in their feet to give up and decide life could never be good. Bryan is proof that attitude is everything.
Who was the most memorable character of My Name is Bryan and why?
Probably Nedra and Bryan tie in that for me. As I mentioned, his positive attitude was inspiring. But so was Nedra's. It was no small thing that she willingly--knowing exactly what it would mean since she was his nurse--took on the responsibility of caring for a man who was so severely limited. And yet she did, and they've had a wonderful (though hard) life. But who doesn't have a hard life? Just because it's hard, doesn't mean it can't also be wonderful.
    A Truley Inspiring Book!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! The narrator did a fantastic job with all the various characters and point of views throughout the book. He captured the humor and the moments of fear and distress. I felt the emotion through this.
What did you like best about this story?
The theme is what stands out the most to me. The value of life. Even though Bryan is damaged to the point of not being able to move or even father children he over comes those things. He does it because he wants to make his life full and meaningful. This story shows that no disability is too great to have a wonderful life.
What does Michael Pauley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He became the voice of Bryan for me. I especially enjoyed the moments of humor. The times that I would catch myself laughing out loud.
Who was the most memorable character of My Name is Bryan and why?
Nedra! Holy cow what a woman! You really have to read the book to appreciate the things she goes through and does for the man she loves. She has extreme strength, loyalty, determination, courage, and compassion.
    Any additional comments?
MY NAME IS BRYAN is a heartwarming story about overcoming the challenges of disability, not only for the individual going through the trial but those that support them. Stacy Lynn Carroll does a fantastic job marrying the various points of view of those involved in Bryans life.

    Publisher's Summary:
Spend a snowbound Christmas in an Elizabethan mansion, amid a wicked and witty assortment of people: musicians, eccentrics, aristocrats, artists, and a pair of bickering ghosts with a taste for eavesdropping and Star Trek.
Struck down by shingles, Cleo Byng postpones her wedding and heads north to recuperate at her infuriating Cousin Henry's house in the wintry Eyotshire village of Hazard. She's not sure what to expect, and Haphazard House turns out to be a dilapidated Elizabethan pile with few amenities and a doom-laden housekeeper, not to mention a strange pair who have been in residence for rather more than the usual life span and have a keen interest in modern technology. Any remaining hopes of a peaceful and uneventful convalescence for Cleo are dashed when she receives an urgent summons to travel abroad and rescue an old friend from the grip of the Hungarian secret police. Then, safely back in England, a crowd of welcome - and less welcome - friends, relatives and connections descend on Haphazard House for what could be its last ever Christmas before the demolition that threatens both it and its long-standing residents.
Can Cleo make Henry appreciate its charms - and hers?
An enchanting and witty tale of marriage, misalliance, and misunderstanding. Escape into another world and delight in the lives of a host of fascinating characters. This is the England of Wodehouse and Downton Abbey, where wickedness and scandal lurk beneath the superb self-confidence of the upper classes.
    Members Reviews:
    Heartstopping Comedy
Cleo Byng and Prudence Pagan from the first volume of this delightful series return, older, slightly wiser, but just as entrancing in a story that moves from a haunted house in England to a perilous rescue from Communist Hungary and back again. Aston's perfect ear for the politics of the period she writes about, combined with her surprising plot twists, vivid characters, and ability to keep the reader guessing until the last page makes this series wonderful entertainment with a serious core.
    Unconvincing spirits
Aston's prose is top notch, especially the descriptive passages.. Some of the subject matter in book 5 seems a bit forced to me but gently so. Her characters (including the ghosts) are less convincing than they might be. Most interesting character is the child. The S&M content is merely suggestive, and hardly qualifies as sexual. What violence there is amounts to little more than things that go bump in the night. Readers expecting to be shocked/scared can pass on this. For descriptive detail of the countryside (UK and Italy), hard to beat Aston.
One of the Best of the Series
As stated before, I love and have read all of these Mountjoy books and am so sad that there will not be any more. This one takes the prize for the two most entertaining and unusual ghostly characters since The Canterbury Ghost - a nice little twist to the saga of this zany and unconventional family. The death of this author is a great loss - I have read all of her books both as Aston and Edmondson and loved each of them.
I love these books -- they are not exactly a series
I love these books -- they are not exactly a series, but they involve interrelated people, They are funny and interesting and somewhat fey; a very good read!
    Ridiculous ghosts and S&M
This was just not up to the quality of the other books.

    Fantastic
What a fantastic and brilliant story. Allison Sweeney did an excellent job on this cute romance book. It was nice hearing her read this novel as well.
    Interesting storyline and quality narration
I loved listening to this book! The storyline and characters held my interest and attention throughout each chapter. I love the writer's style and enjoyed Maddie's journey of discovery of her abilities by working and living outside her comfort zone. Alison Sweeney is now one of my favorite narrators. Really well done!
    Awesome book
Love Alison Sweeney and this is a great listen looking forward to the next one
TOTALLY NOT WHAT I WAS THINKING I WAS BUYING!!
What would have made Scared Scriptless better?
I expected this was a real story about HER and her life (or a serious version of) and it was NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING CLOSE to that! It was fictitious! I didn't but it for that! I stopped reading after the 3rd chapter.
Would you ever listen to anything by Alison Sweeney again?
LOVE HER, but not if she's going to promote one thing and do another
