I just finished Sins of the Father by Ken Cressman and I was once again really impressed! I enjoyed this adventure from beginning to end, the author has a way to make you feel like you are right there with the characters, never a dull moment. Waiting impatiently for his next book!!! If you haven't read anything by this author yet, you absolutely have to!

Ken Cressman has crafted an intense adventure story that is consistently entertaining.

A page turner from start to finish, Sins of the Father is a captivating adventure that kept me wonderfully entertained. Almost a decade ago, notorious drug kingpin Francisco Salazar was taken down by a crack unit. His empire fell, and for years remained in ruin. Now his son, Ramon, is grown and ready to take on his fatherâs mantle. This is where we join David and Samantha, a pair directly involved in the elimination of Salazar Sr., as they undergo a mission spanning several countries, with the task of bringing down Ramon and destroying the Salazar empire for good.

I appreciate a book that can capture my attention. With this book, Ken Cressman is able to do just that. The very first chapter brings you into the fray as you struggle through a home invasion, and from there the action ramps up. The world is filled with vibrant and unique characters, from the main duo: David Larkin and Samantha Colt, to the variety of interesting supports, I never once found myself wanting for more. My personal favourite was a DEA Agent named Scott Bowman, whose dry humour kept me smiling throughout even the darkest of scenes. There was a sense of real, tangible rapport between each of the characters that sucked me in, with realistic, intelligent dialogue. That being said, I would sometimes find that the characters never strayed too far from their stereotype. The cocky DEA agent, the classic Colombian kingpin, it could all feel a little too generic at times. Now, this isnât necessarily a problem, (I mean, who doesnât love slick detectives?), but straying away from the herd wouldnât be such a bad idea. Each character was well developed, but it all seemed to happen behind the scenes instead of right in front of me. I was being told who a character was instead of being shown.

As an avid reader, I need something that can keep me entertained. Thatâs something that Cressman has complete success with. The story takes Larkin and Colt through a variety of settings, from the thriving city of Miami to the lush jungles of Colombia. Every time I found myself settling down, becoming too comfortable, there will be a sudden shift in dynamics and the scenery will take a drastic shift.

Murder and amour in a California mountain village

Having previously read the entertaining Payback, the first book in Mar Preston's "Detective Dex Stafford Mystery" series, which introduced the crime-fighting romantic pairing of Dex Stafford and Holly Seabright, I very much enjoyed this second book in the Dex-and-Holly series. When I was young I read all the Nancy Drew books, and the author's spunky heroine, Holly, strikes me as a Nancy Drew for grownups! This return to the forest setting of California's Sierra Mountain Village, which allows for a gripping encounter with an angry mother bear, offers several nasty possible perps who are even scarier. The story ends with a question mark (no, not about its murder, which is very satisfactorily solved). I'm looking forward to that question's resolution in the next episode.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I enjoyed this book so much! Mar Preston's character leap off the page, there is humour, skulduggery and cats, cats, cats! LOL

As an animal lover, with an emphasis on cats, dogs, and my pet rats, I always enjoy a book which has animals at its centre. Although this book was not about the animals as such, they were a very prominent part of it.

Holly is a delightful character and I certainly want to meet her again. To this end, Mar Preston, you have your orders - another "Holly" novel, please!!

"Dangerous Species" is an intricately plotted story with great imagery and believable characters and I highly recommend it.

Insider Knowledge

Because I live in the same little village in the National Forest above LA that Mar Preston does, I can't help but enjoy her Sierra Mountain Village stories for the vast wealth of information it reveals to me about our home. She is so much more observant than I am.

I love the characters she brings alive and the details with which she describes settings. In the Most Dangerous Species her use of knowledge of police procedures and their need for overwhelming evidence was spot on. I actually felt the police frustration and "the bad guys" cocky assurance.

The only thing I have to say to Mar Preston is "Please don't let Holly leave the Mountain."

Another winning Preston book not to miss.

I'm always waiting for the next Preston book and as expected this one made the wait worthwhile. If you've read Payback you get chance to reconnect with the main characters, Dex and Holly, two law enforcement officers with different roles working together in a small mountain community.
