Dutch rides again
Once again, Mr Bryant has taken me on a familial journey, in the guise of a mystery or two set in the Fort Worth area, circa 1956. His authenticity of time place and character feels like one is slipping on an old robe, one that may have been passed down a generation or two, and probably best that it, like The Character Mother Curridge, don't tend to tell stories. The plot twists and tie-ins which make up the surface level mysteries at hand, only stand to facilitate the greater mystery at hand, and that is the soul of Dutch himself. A soul of contradictions, economy of words, and yet a fragile, sensitive heart. It is so nice not to be told everything, allowing the reader to actually do some "Figuring out" on their on. I highly recommend this great read , put on your old robe, curl up, and take the trip to Ft Worth,Cool, Weatherford et all, and know that you are in safe, smart and comforting hands.
Getting better with each book.
The best book in the Dutch series. It was nice seeing some of the old characters and what's goings on in their lives. We also get a closer glimpse on Dutch's heart and heartbreaks. We visit towns in West Texas and Tim shows his research in the various environments that Dutch will visit. Also as the title implies we really get into the family of Dutch which we only see glimpses of in the previous books. Ole Mama Curridge is a real piece of work, men from my generation will see pieces of the their mother in this women. Finally, Tim has done music lovers a solid, write down the music Dutch listens to and you got a good soundtrack to go along with your second reading.
Those of us who have followed Tim's writings the past few years will see that he has grown as writer, the voice of his words have matured, and you stay interested longer and deeper that any of his writings before.
A fast moving, fast talking Dutch Curridge rides in this episode
Even though I lived in the south during these times, it always surprises me to read how others felt so disenfranchised. Maybe it is because my mother and daddy loved me and all of us knew that. Alvis didn't.
