Tim Gautreaux can really tell a story

I stumbled onto Tim Gautreaux this winter and have read three of his novels and a book of short stories. He writes very interesting stories about believable characters and plausible events in their lives. His stories take place, for the most part, in and around south western Louisiana. I have also read "The Clearing", "Missing" and "Welding with Children" which are also 5 star reads.

Great Storytelling

Gautreaux knows how to tell a story! His descriptions are vivid but not verbose and his characters, despite their many quirks, are believable and interesting. It is refreshing to read a love story that does not shy away from the difficulties and issues that people face in relationships. Even though most individuals will not live in the bayous of Louisiana almost anyone can relate to the personal journey that the two main characters make as they struggle to live life and learn to love.

One of THE GREAT Hollywood novels.

Continuing on in the tradition of Day of the Locust and What Makes Sammy Run, it's Hollywood in the 1970s, written by someone who was in the trenches of that debauched time. Wurlitzer wrote the infamous screenplay for Two-Lane Blacktop, and later Peckinpah's Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. This book is somewhat of a reflection of the Peckinpah experience, but also Hollywood itself. Parallel to that, is a deeply personal story of family and identity. Experimental and soulful at the same time, the writing has a haunting beauty that embodies the hazy feel of that time and place. A true lost classic!

Ending was Disappointing, but Still Worth the Read

Anything George Guidall narrates will get my attention, so it was this avenue that brought me to Archangel. Guidall's narration was flawless! The story was very engaging and interesting throughout -- until the ending chapters. There it seemed to fold in on itself, with questions left unanswered. The main character, a rough, ruthless and sometimes mean owner of the only logging business left in the Maine woods just sort of "fades" to black in the final scenes. Similarly, we are left wondering what happened to all the other players, the logging business itself and the company town. Yes, the "hit man's" outcome is revealed, but what about the budding love affairs, the damaged, the injured? This is a special story about the north woods and corporate logging interests battling with environmentalists. You will learn a great deal about both while listening. I only wished the author would have tried harder to find resolution for the many circumstances he established in the storyline.

Worth reading

Narrated by Guidall- what more is there to say- he makes the story become part of the reader

Ben brilliant as always

Witty, funny, satirical, topical, intelligent as always. Even though I'm not particularly interested in American military goings-on I read/listen to everything Ben writes and enjoyed this one as much as all the others. Never found a subject he can't make entertaining.

Narration not great though - the male lead sounded nothing but sinister in a kind of camp,comedy fake way - kept reminding me of the actor who plays the guy in the wheelchair on Family Guy.

Another cracker from Mr Elton

loved it full of surprises right to the very end...ready for a sequel? Top story beautifully told by Michael Malony. Ben Elton is very readable and even better to listen to. 9/10.

Notable narration

As ever this is a tightly pulled together piece of work by Ben Elton; comedy, observation and politics in equal measures. Feels rather like a draught stageplay, which keeps the structure especially tight.

Anyway, the main reason i am prompted to submit a review (something not done before), was that the narration was outstanding. The very different voices were wonderful without veering into stagey. If you like clearly delineated voices this is one for you (If this is your thing can i recommend Mark Gattiss's brilliant OTT reading of his novel 'The Vesuvius Club', which is still my favourite in this respect.)

An enjoyable and thought provoking read

This book is about a woman whose youngest child has finally left home. Edie has defined herself as a mother for so long that she has no desire to be anything else. Her husband has his vision of how life will be now, and is eager for her to conform to his view.

Edie half-heartedly auditions for a role in a production of an Ibsen play, and (to her great surprise) gets the part. Just as she is rediscovering the actress in herself, who she had put in the backseat for many years, her children return home. As much as she's wished for this, the experience isn't what she expected.

Each child had their own story. I was particularly interested in Matthew, the oldest. In many ways, he is the opposite of the rest of his family-- neat where they are messy, organized where they are scattered, ambitious where they are laid back. He's got a successful girlfriend that is ready to move up in the world, and is going at a pace he can't keep up with. He's having a very hard time dealing with this.

Ben and Rosa are both much earlier in the process of finding out who they are and what they should be doing with themselves. Rosa is fairly newly out of an intense relationship that left her significantly in debt. Ben is moving in with his girlfriend, who isn't quite ready to leave her mother.

These characters and more are what made the book work. They had interesting stories. They were each flawed while still being sympathetic. I was interested in where they ended up, even while recognizing the mistakes they made in getting there.

To me, the book reflected the importance of control over ones own life. The characters making their own choices about how they were living had a much easier time coping than those at the mercy of circumstances.

I did not enjoy reading this book

I did not enjoy reading this book. Story of odd mother, distant father and whiny children was not time well spent. I kept reading ,thinking it had to get better or at least it would become interesting but it never really happened. I can't understand why this book came with book club type discussion questions... I would never expect friends to slog through this mess!JMO...

It's like spending time with a dear friend

There's so much truth and wisdom in this story, as well as being really interesting. It's like spending time with a dear friend, and finding out about her life. Amazingly, I am a fairly new empty nester, and this hit home, and caused me to think about quite a few things. All of the characters seemed like real people I could imagine with their usual complicated lives, and trying to grow up. Thank you again Joanna Trollope.

Enjoyable

I depend upon this author to give me novels that a middle-aged female can relate to and she brings it home again with this story of how the definitions of family and marriage evolve through the years.

A DARNED GOOD READ!

What a pity this book only has one review! This is the second time I have read this book, the first was a few years ago, so - although I did remember it as I went along - the plot and writing is good enough to make it fresh for me.

The story of Alberta, her mum and Hannah her daughter is well portrayed and as the scandal arising from Alberta's father's death breaks. Alberta, over the course of the book, discovers quite a few secrets about her parents and her deceased husband, Ed.

I enjoy books set in England. The spelling and phraseology is familiar and many of the places can be visualised from experience. The characters are well shown and fleshed out and I particularly liked Jacob, Hannah and Tony's son.

A good story well told.

Not a Foodie Book but Enjoyed

This was my first Debby Holt book that I have read and I will admit that I was a bit deceived by the cover and title. I first thought since the cover has a woman cooking and the word recipe was in the title, that it was going to be a book focusing on food and cooking in the story line. Sadly, even though food is briefly mentioned, this book was not a foodie novel.

Instead the book is the story of three women in a family - grandmother, mother, daughter. The three stories are intertwined and we learn a lot about the characters through their different stories. While I enjoyed all three of the women's stories, I preferred reading about Alberta's daughter and her mother over her own story. Not that Alberta's story was boring but I felt that the other two women had more going on in their stories than Alberta's did. There several times when I would shout in shock or exclamation over Hannah and Philappa's stories. Even with the huge generation gap between the two, I felt like I could relate more to them. I also laughed a lot with these two characters.

Alberta's not so much unfortunately. I really did not like Daniel's character. He was really full of himself and is exactly the type of character I could not stand. Seriously I just wanted to shake Alberta every time she would spend time with the man. There were times when I got annoyed at other characters as well. I just felt that a lot of unnecessary drama was created and could have easily been resolved if parties had just sat down and talked with each other. As it stood, all those ingredients of drama did indeed add up to recipe for scandal.

Overall though I did enjoy the book. The story picked up around the middle of the book, and from there I couldn't stop reading. I really think British chick lit is far superior to American chick lit.
