    Remember Me
beautifully written as you would expect from Melvyn Bragg. Mark McGann is a brilliant narrator and manages to be equally convincing as an elderly genteel french woman and a working class cumbrian man. The only reason that I have not given this five stars is the subject matter, there is a vein of depression running through the story that dragged me down a little. Had I realised the nature of the story, I would probably looked for another title.
    Boring
Far too long a story although Mark McGann reads it beautifully. I got lost in the over elaborate descriptive writing Bragg employs.

    Excellent story
Where does Passin' rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This book ranks in the top ten!!
What did you like best about this story?
The ending when "Nicole" realized what she did & realized it wasn't worth all the valuable people & time she missed.
Which character as performed by Sharon Washington was your favorite?
The narrator was easy to follow, nice speaking voice. She did an excellent job!! I liked all of the characters, all characters had a valuable part in the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didn't listen to the book in 1 sitting, but I could've.....couldn't wait til I could listen to the next chapters.
    Great Listen
This is actually my second time listening to this book. The first time was years ago!!
It is a good story line and pulls you to the end trying to figure out how and when her "Passin" will implode!!
    Interesting read; enjoyable listen
This is the second book I have read by Quinones Miller. The controversial topic of racial passing made this book quite an interesting read, as the protagonist is faced with biases and dilemmas that involve this possibility. Her questions and (lack of) actions lend easily to a discussion on self-perception, as well as past and present race relations. The plot was a bit longer than necessary to drive the point home; as a result, it became a bit predictable after a while. Nonetheless, I was pleased with the book. I truly enjoyed the narration, as Ms. Washington read with much fluency and her voice was very diverse and believable as she took on different roles. I would read other books by this author and certainly listen to others with the same narrator!

Fearful of revealing her life to public scrutiny, Lydia wants to cancel the project, and is none too thrilled when Kate shows up on her Benedict Canyon doorstep. But the two women develop a strong friendship and, as they work together on the book, they're forced to acknowledge parts of their lives they've long denied.

    Great beach reading!
This was a sweet little book, decently written, and just perfect for vacation. Kate is a New York book editor, sent out to L.A. to help famous actress Lydia Southland write her memoirs. Lydia, Kate and all the people around them have had struggles they've kept secret and all these come out during the process. Both ladies find love, and though it's all terribly predictable, it's also very sweet. The ending is tied up in a nice little bow and they all live happily ever after, which is just what one expects from this type of book. A worthwhile read, if you're going to a beach, or that's the kind of thing you're into.

    Pure delight, wonderfully original
Thank goodness I found this novel -- it's pure delight, and hard to believe it's a debut novel, to boot. The Garden Angel was total refreshment from beginning to end. I stayed up all night to finish it, and the well-crafted story deeply resonated. I was moved by the ending. This novel examines the layers of "home" and what home means to different characters -- interesting, complex, funny, and appealing characters. Poignant yet humorous in places, it's a delightful piece of literature that deserves the praise it's getting. It is SO MUCH BETTER than other novels out there right now on the NYT list. Thanks, Mindy, and keep writing!

Kate Karlson's only focus in life is her Midwestern horse farm. Ignoring her husband, she spends long days giving riding lessons and training horses. To showcase her teaching ability, she enters her three sons and daughter in all the equestrian shows. But when her family dares to thwart her interests, the results bring tragedy and devastation.
In this spellbinding tale of love, work, and duty, Jane Smiley examines the excesses we sometimes commit in the name of ambition.
    Critic Reviews:
"Chilling....Jane Smiley handles with skill and understanding the mercurial molasses of adolescence, and the inchoate, cumbersome love that family members feel for one another." (The New York Times)

    More than a horse story
This book literally haunted me. I found myself constantly thinking about the characters days after I finished it. It is a quiet kind of story, packed with repressed emotions, and somehow the ending felt cathartic although not immediately so. I could see chaos in this large rambling horse farm family and I could put together the events with a clarity I did not feel the moment I finished the book. It took awhile, and slowly these people took more shape and I began to understand more and feel the story's latent ending. I was intrigued by the family dynamics, the dominant mother/trainer, the passive, ever-loving, forgiving father, and each child responding in the only way their personalities would allow to the intensity of their demanding mother. The end was powerful. I reflected on the father holding his head in his hands as he realized there was no end in sight to his wife's sovereignity and determination to carry on at any cost. I crave a sequel, yet I already know it. It is the epitome of barn blind.
    Five Stars
    Easy read
    Beautifully written but disturbing.
I found the character of Kate to be monstrous; perhaps I was supposed to. Her only nearly redeeming quality was that she protected her horses from abuse. Not actually redeeming since she heaped emotional and verbal abuse on her children while doing so. The characters of the children were the most fully realized and heartbreaking. The horse lingo was not a barrier for me as it was to some readers. The comparisons to Horse Heaven are not apt - Horse Heaven is a book *about* horses and horse racing, where the horses themselves are major characters. The is a book about a dysfunctional family that happens to own horses, and the dysfunction is expressed through through the mother's obsessions.
I sincerely hope Kate was not based on a real life instructor or trainer. If she was, the author should share that information so we can all stay far, far away.
Pretty amazing for a first novel, with sufficient mystery
I have no great interest in horses, but my daughter does, so I found the horse aspects interesting. I have no idea if it was accurate, and the "convenient abrupt ending" another reviewer alluded to I found to make perfect sense with the flow of the rest of the novel. Throughout there was a sense that *something* was going occur and it was going to be very important, and well, finally it did. I didn't like the characters themselves a lot either, with the exception of Axel, but only when reading "Women in Love" by DH Lawrence, has that really mattered to me. I found the characters interesting and on the edge of transformation.

Now they're kept in balance only by Matthew's best and oldest friend, Ben, a rising science superstar - and Amelia's new boyfriend.
That balance begins to crumble one night when, on his way home to his upscale Philadelphia loft, Matthew finds himself on a desolate bridge face-to-face with a boy screaming for help. Homeless for most of his life, 10-year-old Danny is as streetwise as he is world-weary, and his desperation to save his three-year-old sister means he will do whatever it takes to get Matthew's help.
What follows is an escalating game of one-upmanship between Matthew, Amelia, and Danny, as all three players struggle to defend what is most important to them - and are ultimately forced to reconsider what they truly want.
Dazzlingly written, Lisa Tucker's The Cure for Modern Life is a smart, humorous, big-hearted novel about what it means in the 21st century to be responsible, to care about other people, and to do the right thing.
    Critic Reviews:
"In crisp, lively prose, Tucker cleverly executes a series of surprising twists that, coupled with the Big Pharma backdrop and cinematic feel, make the novel as fast-paced as a thriller, but with astute and often humorous observations about the shifting morality of 21st-century America." I LOVED THIS BOOK
This story had so much draw, I turned it off whenever I couldn't give it my full attention. Anyone that listens to audio books on a regular basis should know what that means, hell, anyone that reads a book knows what that means. You skim the boring parts. But this book really doesn't have any. It skips all the lengthy (and largely unnecessary) descriptions in favor of really good dialog which does a much better job of developing characters, which in turn allows for a richer story. It is albeit somewhat predictable and not wholly believable, but you can hardly blame the author for that - after all, what hasn't been done?
In the end, it's a touching, well written, and thoroughly engaging book. I strongly recommend.
    Light and engrossing entertainment
A romantic comedy with interesting characters and a fun but implausible plot. I found myself anxious to listen to more every time I had to turn it off. I liked the main characters and cared about what happened to them. The narration is excellent!
    Implausible plot
Honestly, I wanted to like this book because I was taking an 8 hour car trip and it was the only book I had to listen to. However, I have to say that the plot was implausible, the characters were annoying and unlikable and the author was so focused on details that she often let the plot unravel as she delved into the details and background. By the end I didn't like any of the characters and just wanted to finish the book.
Scott Brick good, book badly written
    Don't buy it
    Chick lit
Good distraction book with plot but annoying narrator.
I listened twice -- the second time years later. It was pleasant enough for background while I worked.

    Okay but not great
I found the writing in this one incredibly over-wrought and florid, almost laughably so at some points. You are left with the impression of the narrator as being a pompous prat - which may well be the intention but it makes it a bit hard to stick with. The last hour or so is stunning, however.
    Awful book!
This is the first book I have aborted after hour of listening! Boring, lifeless and dull!!!
    Finding me in the Sea
