    Title: Trains and Lovers
    Author: Alexander McCall Smith
    Narrator: David Purdie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-01-12
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the words of Alexander McCall Smith: "You feel the rocking of the train, you hear the sound of its wheels on the rails; you are in the world rather than suspended somewhere above it. And sometimes there are conversations to be had, which is what the overarching story in this collection is all about. It is a simple device: people brought together entertain one another with tales of what happened to them on trains. It takes place on a journey I frequently make myself and know well, the journey between Edinburgh and London. It is best read on a train, preferably that one."

I so wanted to love the book, but...
This book held so much promise! The ending fell just short enough of perfect to drop it into a 3 star rating.
Four different people find themselves together on a long train ride. To pass the time, they tell their stories to each other. Each story is unique, rich in texture and character. The author is adept at introducing them. As a reader, the time passes nicely. I'm interested, patiently engaged, and enjoying the journey in general while I wait for the stories to cross in some way. Then, suddenly, the train comes to a stop and so does the story weaving. I'm left with a sense of incompleteness.
When the four passengers go their separate ways, it felt like their stories had been cut short, unfinished in the telling. Where was the thread throughout? What was the point? Where was the story arc? What was the connection? They were all missing, as if left on the seat behind me.
I could frame that as literary poetry, conducive to the circumstances of the setting that the train had arrived at its final destination. But it doesn't change the fact that the ending felt like it fizzled out prematurely and took away from my satisfaction of having completed the journey of reading the book.
This is the second time I've read "Trains and Lovers". It was sitting on my Kindle and I had the time to read so opened it back up. I looked at the notes I made the first time, and they weren't stellar. I shrugged my shoulders and thought, "Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I read it the first time." I'm left with the same impression once again.
From where I'm sitting, if you aren't looking to be emotionally pulled into a story or the characters, and you want to simply pass the time without having to think or feel, much like eavesdropping on someone else's conversation, then this book is perfect for you. If you're in the mood to read because you want to take an emotional journey, rather than observe life passively through the window, then this isn't the right choice of books for you right now.
A Gentle and Thoughtful Book about Significant Relationships
McCall Smith has once again written a gentle and thoughtful book that appreciates the diversity found in human relationships. While listed in one location as a book for young readers, this book is clearly written for adults. In it, four individuals meet on a train, three of whom feel comfortable enough with each other to share insights from their significant love relationships. The fourth traveller contemplates his own unrequited love, which we are allowed to consider although it is left unshared verbally with his newly- met companions.

beautiful cornish story set on the Tamar
I love all Marcia's stories and her ability to capture and pull you into her books with her amazing cornish imagery . In this story I could feel the mist cloaking around me as it rose off the Tamar River and the atmosphere the book created in the loft overlooking the sea garden was pure magic .Unfortunately the storyline floundered on several occasions in its need to reflect and recapture old characters from past books, ,it seemingly made the story repetitive and it just lost its flow . I still enjoyed the story of Jess and her connection with her past and Marcia's story telling however I feel that it's time to let Cass, Kate, Tom and this whole family go.
    Sea Garden Review
Well written and plausible - with an unexpected twist. I enjoyed it and I will definitely reread it sometime. I was left with a feeling of contentment once I had finished it.
The Sea Garden, a Great Book
Loved this book, well up to her usual standard, good characters and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read.
    The Sea Garden
Having read all of Marcia' s books, this one did not disappoint. I really enjoyed reading it and it was nice to meet up with familiar characters. It had a nice twist to it. I think this book will appeal to mature readers.
    The Sea Garden
I love Marcia Willet's books, and The Sea Garden turned out to be one of my favorites. I loved revisiting some of the characters from her earlier books like Tom and Cass, Kate, Oliver, Gemma, etc. The setting is beautiful and I love that a Golden Retriever is always included in the story ! Marcia has a unique way of bringing you up to date on characters from previous storylines and I really enjoy that.

    Not much about Christmas
I thought that this would be a good programme to listen to in the run up to Christmas but it was not as festive as I had expected. I enjoyed it in parts. The characters were rounded and convincing but the narrative was rather obvious. Worst of all, the tone was overly polite. Possibly due, in part, to the way it was read - as if to children at times. The over performance of characters' dialogue and unconvincing accents grated on me. I made this choice in haste so perhaps this was not really going to be for me.
Nice to hear, but why start here?
Julia William's Hope Christmas books are unashamed feel good Christmas reads, and I hold my hand up to re-reading Last Christmas each December (with a mince pie of course). We've got the rest of the year to read the grown-up and serious stuff.
So whilst it's good to have 2 of the series recorded for Audible (this and the later Coming Home for Christmas), why on earth not start at the beginning? One reviewer said this book wasn't that Christmassy.. Fair enough. You have to start with the original book, Last Christmas, meeting Cath and Noël Tinsall (yes, I know..) and their family to be able to realise the series follows a few families in the mythical village of Hope Christmas.
This is a light, enjoyable book but if you want it to make sense, download Last Christmas to your Kindle and read that first. That's unless Audible arranges to record it.. Soon, please?!
    Great, easy listening
I loved this tale of village life. Its very Archers like and extremely listenable. Hopefully gets continued in future books.

    Members Reviews:
Probably a great story, but needs better narration
    Any additional comments?
A confusing cast of characters and a story line that jumps back and forth in time and place really requires a narrator that can give life to people and places. That did not happen here, so while I see glimpses of brilliance in the story, I am repeatedly confused about where/when we are...
    Just Perfect
If ever a 'clever book' benefited from being read allowed it's Umbrella - the book is just released from the awful hard to get into tag it was given and becomes fantastic prose, a total joy - and as for the old psych bins, Will self totally and utterly nails it. Perfect.
    Fantastic
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a great book - I have already recommended it to my Dad and a chap I met in a coffee shop the other day
What was one of the most memorable moments of Umbrella?
The private musings of the main character are my favourite aspects, you really feel like you are inside his head
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The scene when the Doctor goes to see Albert
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes it is very poignant - I laughed out loud and was subdued by the ending
    Any additional comments?
Will Self must be very pleased with the bloke who reads this book - he totally brings it to life - loved him - the voices were spot on
Umbrella - an object you can easily lose
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book describes the lives of characters just as though they were umbrellas - they are passed around and not truly in control of their own destiny. For this reason, you identify with the characters and become truly interested in the outcome of their future.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Zachary the psychiatrist.
Have you listened to any of Mike Gradys other performances? How does this one compare?
Mike Grady reads the book very fluently and understood the plot so that his innotation was correct.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Umbrella - life's not what you think it is.
    Any additional comments?
If you enjoy Will Self's wordy plotlines, then this is a must.
    Great story but ...
I think this is a great story and could've made a wonderful book. unfortunately the writing style is extremely fragmented and disengaging. I didn't like it at all I thought so many times about stop reading/listening to the book. What a shame !
I guess a movie might save this good story at the end of the day

    Members Reviews:
    Great funny Story
Would you listen to The Understudy again? Why?
Yes, very interested the whole way through and perfect for a tube book.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the acting culture and books that are based around things and places i know this was funny, witty and a good story to follow.
Which character as performed by Paul Thornley was your favourite?
Steve, very believable realistic and easy to follow. also i love under dog stories.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
classic under dog story set against the hard life of a west end actor.
    Disappointing
I became utterly bored with this and couldn't finish it.
It has a very good start - I liked the first person narrative, the initial premise was good and so was the narrator. I happily listened to a number of chapters before it became a hard slog to continue.
    Really enjoyed this book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is an immensely warm hearted novel - and the narration is quite extraordinary. Paul Thornley hits just the right note with the voices he chooses - the downbeat Steve, and teh unruly Josh - but his voice for Nora is extraordinary - he makes her totally come to life - magical and fascinating and yet also with a very loveable integrity. Characters are multi dimensional and there are some extremely funny moments. I'm missing living with them already!
    Not to be missed
This was my second David Nicholls audio book and I enjoyed this story of the under dog and understudy Stephen McQueen and his escapades even more than "US" which I also really enjoyed.
Great performance from the narrator too.
    Mad, bad and dangerous?
A life not going as intended made more poignant by contrast with the proximity of another's success, this is a story of failed acting ambition and a lost relationship as told from the perspective of the main protagonist, Stephen.
The character is captured well by the narrator, Paul Thornley, in an excellent reading and Mr. Nicholl's dialogue and text is, at times, both witty and just tinged with an equal quantity of hope and despair.
I did enjoy this book but am still uncertain if it has left me sad for the loss of the past or hopeful for life to come. Recommended.

    Members Reviews:
    a good read
the young working class boy at university - a middle class girl, a classic scenario but well done and the way that the story hinges around University Challenge made it page turning and amusing.
Well read - it pushed all my empathy to the boy, even feeling his embarrassment in some of his more ridiculous predicaments
Hard to read when you're constantly cringing
What disappointed you about Starter for Ten?
I expected the main character to evolve and demonstrate some redeeming qualities but he seemed to get more and more stupid and shallow as the book went on. There was just one gag running through the entire book - what is this idiot going to screw up next? I hung on in there, as I'd found One Day to be such a good read, but every time he, and the book, seemed about to turn a corner, he blew it again.
I found it unconvincing that the femme fatale character would at any point return his affections.
Maybe men can relate to this catalogue of woes better than me.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have taken a look at what other characters were experiencing rather than the one claustrophobic perspective.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narrator fitted the main character, but the relentless "cheeky chappie" style, no matter what pain he was going through, started to irritate me.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It was interesting to relive a pre-digital world, with some good descriptive passages.
One Day, this is not, but a great read and fun
I loved One Day and so came to this with very high expectations. Yes I was a little disappointed but actually after I got over that it was a good fun story. Loved the underlying theme that holds the story together, the games show.
Story line is obvious and linear but actually all the better for that.
A pleasure to listen to and you do grow close to the small pool of key characters.
    Confident and assured
A very assured piece of writing. Enjoyable and good to listen to. More uplifting than some of the other titles by DN. I'll look out for more.
    Never gets going
I didn't like the story of this audiobook. It just doesn't get very meaty and to be honest I struggled to care about the main character.
The narration was very good although he needs to work on his female voices.

    Publisher's Summary:
At the far end of the long white gallery is a painting of woman, in pale flowing clothes and lying on a sofa beside an open window. The muslin curtains billow out towards her like clouds. There is a touch of brilliant red, the ribbon on her hat. The rest is the white, cream, palest grey. It is a painting which leads Flora on, beckoning her away from her childhood, her complaining, clinging mother, pert younger sister, and the confines of a small community, to a proud and self-reliant future. But later, its image is to prove the catalyst for the most significant event in her life.
Isolation, separation, solitude, betrayal. The shocks of life. The consolations and the beauty of death. A few piercing moments of absolute joy and perfect understanding. The Service of Clouds is about these things, and also about love, loyalty, friendship, growing up, and growing old.
    Members Reviews:
    A melancholy, unusual tale
The title is taken from a piece by John Ruskin, referring to certain painters: If a general and characteristic name were needed for modern landscape art, none better could be invented than the service of clouds."
This book reminded me of an Anita Brookner novel more than anything else, and that isn't a bad thing. Of slow pace, with beautiful literary writing, and good characterization, it is a novel in which not a lot happens. If you like a book with a lot of action and external conflict which moves the plot forward, this won't be a good selection for you.
I found it heartbreaking, sad, intriguing, and highly original. It's a book that plays to Susan Hill's strengths. Well done, and recommended to the reader who enjoys this literary style of novel.
Not Susan Hill's Finest Work ...... But ........
....... the story is really good, very intriguing and captivating, however, the narration is very clumsy and even dull in places making the whole experience of listening and getting into the story lines difficult. Therefore I am giving this one only two stars, its not on a par with Susan Hill's other works but it still a good eery story just wish it was better read aloud with voices and character that's all.
    Not her best
I have listened/ read a number of Susan Hill's books with enjoyment but this on is not up to the high standard I expect. Slow to start ... I've given up at chapter 3
    boring and dull
I did not enjoy this novel and felt it was well below the usual standard of Susan Hill. It took too long to come to any cohesive point and it simply felt like a mismatch of dull, boring and less than normal characters who did not ultimately bring any life to the plot. Very disappointing and couldn't wait for the end to come.

    Publisher's Summary:
Spring, 2010. When Charlie and Ros inherit Ashenden from their aunt Reggie, a decision must be made. The beautiful 18th-century house, set in acres of English countryside, is in need of serious repair. Do they try to keep it in the family, or will they have to sell?
Moving back in time, in an interwoven narrative spanning two and a half centuries, we witness the house from its beginnings through to the present day. Along the way we meet those who have built the house, lived in it and loved it; those who have worked in it; and those who would subvert it to their own ends. There is Mrs Trimble, housekeeper to the rackety, spendthrift Mores; the wealthy Henderson family, in their Victorian heyday; six-year-old Pudge; Walter Beckmann, prisoner in its grounds; and Reggie and Hugo, agents of its postwar revival. Through good times and bad, the better we get to know the house, the more we care about its survival.

    Not what I expected
Would you try another book from Elizabeth Wilhide and/or Carole Boyd?
    Yes, Carole Boyd
No, Elizabeth Wilhide -- or at least not without much more research on how others liked her book
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
This was not what I expected at all. I enjoy sweeping epics that are based around a building. I'm a huge Kate Morton fan and love how her stories center on a house or an estate and tell the story going back and forth in time. That was what I was looking for. What I got instead was a story about a house and each little story that was told felt disjointed and unconnected. The author kept saying at the end, "The house knows. The house knows what it wants." Apparently it wanted a lot of inhabitants that were fairly boring and only wanted their stories half-told. It seemed that each time I became half-way interested in a few characters, the author jumped to another era. Arghhh... and barely any stories were connected! I did enjoy at the end when Allison and Izzy and Charlie and Reggie all seemed to float in and out of the stories.
I listened all the way through, I kept hoping it would get interesting and I could have given up on the story, but I'm too cheap. I paid for it dammit, and I was going to listen to it.
    Good, but not great.
    Any additional comments?
When Charlie and his sister inherit their aunt's run-down estate in rural England, Ashenden Park, they disagree over what they should do with it. Charlie, who now resides in New York City, knows they can't afford to keep such an enormous estate and his sister Ros wants to keep it and live there. As they are contemplating the decisions they need to make, the reader is transported back to different periods in the history of Ashenden Park, from it's design and contruction, to a later owner who had the money to make it a great estate, to its becoming a hospital for soldiers during WWI and on to Charlie's aunt purchasing the estate and restoring it in the 1950s. The book was reviewed as Downton Abbey-ish, but I did not feel that it was. It was a good book, but not a great one. Recommended, with that caveat.
    Story of a house
This is much more about the building itself rather than a saga type of story about people. I expected something different more like a " Downton Abbey" scenario so did not really enjoy this. It is a random collection of stories about random people who have one thing in common namely Ashenden itself.

Would you listen to You Came Back again? Why?
This was a decent story, but somewhat predictable, and I struggled to like the main character. He describes himself as struggling to not be a sissy (not the exact word, but you get the meaning), and throughout the story I kept thinking to myself Yup, he sure is. That made it difficult to connect with him. Several of the other characters were great, and helped to move the story forward, especially his father.
Have you listened to any of Scott Holsts other performances before? How does this one compare?
The reading was excellent. I've listened to other stories read by Scott Holst, and they are universally easy to understand and not prone to "over-acting" which is one of the things that drives me crazy about some readers. Scott did a good job of giving subtle differences to the characters voices so you can easily distinguish who is speaking. His pacing is perfect for this story.
    Any additional comments?
All in all, it was worth reading, but I won't listen to it again. Excellent job by the reader, Mr. Holst.
    Blah
Would you try another book from Christopher Coake and/or Scott Holst?
    Not without reading reviews first
What was most disappointing about Christopher Coakes story?
The story took a different direction from what I expected and as it unfolded I cared less and less about the characters involved in the tale.
How could the performance have been better?
I had no issue with the performance by Scot Hoist. It was the story he told.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I was surprised I actually finished it.
    DISAPPOINTED - Extremely
Highly disappointed. This book just left me absolutely cold. Well, not absolutely cold theres enough heat from the disappointment in my wasted credit. Trite, unimaginative and just plain pathetic. The main character has absolutely no redeeming qualities all the way to the very end and the author makes the girlfriend out to be some pathetic woman just needing her babys daddy regardless of his worthless heart and that is pretty much the summation of the entire book a bunch of weak women and cheating, lying, conniving men. No Im not a man basher, not at all I was rooting for him and hoping it was going to turn around but no, his very last action in his own words another lie.
