    Title: At the Water's Edge
    Author: Sara Gruen
    Narrator: Justine Eyre
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-07-15
    Publisher: Two Roads
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The new novel from the best-selling author of Water for Elephants.
A gripping and poignant love story set in a remote village in the Scottish Highlands at the end of the Second World War.
After embarrassing themselves at the social event of the year in high society Philadelphia on New Year's Eve of 1944, Maddie and Ellis Hyde are cut off financially by Ellis' father, a former army colonel who is already ashamed of his colour-blind son's inability to serve in WWII.
To Maddie's horror, Ellis decides that the only way to regain his father's favour (and generosity) is to succeed in a venture his father attempted and very publicly failed at: he will hunt the famous Loch Ness monster, and when he finds it he will restore his father's name and return to his father's good graces.
In January 1945 they hitch a ride on a ship across the Atlantic while the war is still raging all around them. And Maddie, now alone and virtually abandoned in a foreign country, must begin to work out who she is and what she wants - the vacuous life she left behind or something more real?
What she discovers - about the larger world and about herself - opens her eyes not only to the dark forces that exist around her but to the beauty and surprising possibilities of life.
    Critic Reviews:
"I devoured this book. Sara Gruen has proven herself, once again, to be one of America's most compelling storytellers... You might be tempted to rush to get to the answers at the end - but don't - or you'll miss the delectable journey that is Gruen's prose." (Kathryn Stockett, bestselling author of The Help)
"If I needed a reminder why I am such a fan of Sara Gruen's books, her latest novel provides plenty. Unique in its setting and scope, this impeccably researched historical fiction is full of the gorgeous prose I've come to expect from this author. And even after finishing, its message still resonates with me: the monsters we seek may be right in front of us. In fact, the only fault I can find with this book is that I've already finished it." (Jodi Picoult)

    terrible accents
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
someone that can't tell the difference between a scottish and irish accent
What didnt you like about Justine Eyres performance?
terrible - her scottish accent was the worst I have ever heard
    Poor narration :-(
Average story read by a terrible narrator! Ive never heard such awful accents! Was trying!
    Dreadful
This is the worst book I have ever read/listened to. Think Mills and Boon meets Monarch of the Glen. And that's kind. Narrator wildly irritating and kind of bleated her way through it with Scottish accents that make Dick Van Dyke look like Laurence Olivier.
A good follow up to Water for Elephants
Don't be put off by the element of the story which is about searching for the Loch Ness Monster - it is about so much more! The cruelty of war and individuals & the strength required to survive. The odd flight of fancy is acceptable too in a very readable story.
    accent mixup
lovely story, took a bit of time to get into.
the Scottish accents sound very Irish which I found distracting, being Scottish myself.

Loved the searcher of love in the first story, who found her fairy tale finally, complete with Prince Charming. The setting of Kuau'i in the second was as good as a photo. In the third story, the passenger made me want to scream and scratch, which was the objective, I think, but I didn't much like the driver, either. There were no unnecessary words in Molly's writing: very precise and neat and fine.
I would recommend this book. To all my friends and relatives.
Can't remember what else you asked for, sorry.
    I loved all three stories
I loved all three stories.....great writing, wonderful, tender, loving women....Molly Giles writes about real women, she always manages to tell the truth...I've been a big fan for a long time....so happy to see, Three for the Road. here on Amazon. Thank you.

Short story master Giles tells new stories...
Masterful short story telling! Molly Giles is adept at the pointed description, spare and biting in many cases, lush and evocative in others.

    Résumé de l'éditeur:
"D'abord, je vais vous raconter le hold-up que nos parents ont commis. Ensuite les meurtres, qui se sont produits plus tard."
Great Falls, Montana, 1960.

    Publisher's Summary:
One frigid, January morning in Manhattan, a new father, racked by sleep deprivation, decides to let his wife sleep in - then spontaneously flees lower Manhattan with the baby for a weekend in the Caribbean. It wasnt a kidnapping, he wasnt leaving his wife; he just wanted to spend a little time with the baby and give his wife a break. When the wife awakes, truly rested for the first time in nearly a year, she feels great - and embarks on a city adventure as misguided in its own way as her husbands impulsive escape. Told from the couples alternating points of view, the story unfolds across one life-changing long weekend. The wife tries to recapture who she was before the baby. The husband struggles to care for his daughter - far from the special homemade formula and high-end diapers she requires. Parenting had seemed like such a doable idea - until they tried to do it. Lucky, highly educated Americans, this couple barely survives making the first real sacrifice of their lives. But survive it they do, in a hilarious, touching, tour de force debut about passion, ambivalence, and love.
    Critic Reviews:
"Thea Goodmans astute debut novel poses the question, What if you were to step out of your embedded life? And her discerning mind answers it with a tale of Manhattanites more inextricably bound together than they might imagine." (Susan Minot, author of Evening)
"From its first alarming domestic scene to its far-from-inevitable, unbearably true conclusion, The Sunshine When Shes Gone is a faultless portrait of a marriage in crisis and the precarious paths we all must take to keep our lives in balance. Ever been in love? This book will shake you, jolt you, wake you up to life." (Patrick Somerville, author of The Cradle and This Bright River)
"Thea Goodman has made something I wouldve thought impossible: an edge-of-your-seat narrative about parenting a small child. Her emotional investment in her characters is complete as they confront each other, themselves, and the heavy weight of new love." (Nell Freudenberger, author of The Newlyweds)

    I know right?!?!..... Exactly!.....
How many times have I literally had those exact same conversations in my head or with my partner. So very relatable and common, yet story enough to wrap me up in needing to know what happens next. Sort of a mid life/new parent must read. Enjoy!

    Publisher's Summary:
Webs of Power is a raw, unsentimental portrayal of greed, manipulation, and relationships set in the excessive, insatiable retail industry of the 1980s.
When a hostile takeover of the retail giant Consolidated is announced, the lives of three determined women, each linked to the corporate upheaval, are unexpectedly thrown off course: Paige Toddman's marriage to Consolidated's West Coast Division CEO is threatened when she decides to step out of her fast-paced lifestyle to raise the unwanted child she is carrying - a choice driven by her secret past. The fabric of Ashleigh McDowell's life begins to fray when her fiancé, the president of Consolidated's West Coast Division, moves away and her father figure faces a lawsuit that could wipe out his controlling shares of the company s stock. Vain and power hungry, Viviana De Mornay will stop at nothing to become the wife of the man leading the takeover.
Webs of Power is a thrilling real-world drama with dynamic characters who find the courage to drastically reshape their lives in the face of crises and the twists of fate.

    Entertaining Read
I love to read books that are character driven however in the past few years I have picked up more books and then put them down after the first few chapters than I can count. That was certainly not the case with "Webs of Power". I couldn't put this book down. That is the biggest compliment I can give to an author. I don't know how many times I would tell myself just one more chapter and then five chapters later I was still reading.
I don't know anything at all about the corporate world and I was afraid that I would be lost trying to understand what was going on. I have to say that Darlene Quinn did an amazing job of explaining it and making it interesting. I really enjoyed her writing style and the way that the story flowed.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books with strong characters both male and female weaved into fast paced well written storyline.
    I really enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed this book. It took me to another place and thoroughly entertained me. I'm going to immediately dig into the next one from Darlene Quinn.
    A Well-Woven Tale
Think leveraged buyouts and hostile takeovers are dull business-page news? Think again. Webs of Power, a drama of love, secrets, betrayal and danger, will hold you spellbound as it explores the turbulent world of fashion merchandising in the 1980's. When a corporate raider attacks a mercantile empire, the lives of three strong women and the powerful men they love are thrown into upheaval. How they respond, and the interwoven events they set in motion, makes for a fast-paced, absorbing story with plenty of surprising turns. Darlene Quinn knows the world of department stores and fashion management; her surefooted depiction of people and places makes you feel like an insider in a high stakes game. Shopping at Macy's or Bloomingdale's may never feel the same.
    A Jackie Collins Story
This is really a soap opera in written form. The situations are similar to many other stories and the characters not the most loveable. The backstory is interesting...the retail world, but the author really does not make the parts of the story work, for me.

    Publisher's Summary:
Peter Herman is something of a folk hero. Marriage Is a Canoe, his legendary, decades-old book on love and relationships, has won the hearts of hopeful romantics and desperate cynics alike. He and his beloved wife lived a relatively peaceful life in upstate New York. But now its 2010, and Peters wife has just died. Completely lost, he passes the time with a woman he admires but doesnt love - and he begins to look back through the pages of his book and question homilies such as:
A good marriage is a canoe - it needs care and isnt meant to hold too much - no more than two adults and a few kids.
Its advice he has famously doled out for decades. But what is it worth?
Then Peter receives a call from Stella Petrovic, an ambitious young editor who wants to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Marriage Is a Canoe with a contest for struggling couples. The prize? An afternoon with Peter and a chance to save their relationship.
The contest ensnares its creator in the largely opaque politics of her publishing house while it introduces the reader to couples in various states of distress, including a shy 30-something Brooklynite and her charismatic and entrepreneurial husband, who may just be a bit too charismatic for the good of their marriage. Theres the middle-aged publisher whose imposing manner has managed to impose loneliness on her for longer than she cares to admit. And then there is Peter, who must discover what he meant when he wrote Marriage Is a Canoe if he is going to help the contests winners and find a way to love again.

    Just couldn't connect
    Any additional comments?
Here's a "don't waste your time, because I did it for you," review. An interesting construct, telling the story of a single-book author whose claim to fame is a self-help book based on putative stories about success in marriage told by his too-good-to-be true grandfather. First, this book is better suited to people whose ages are closer to a school zone speed limit than a freeway speed limit. Second, I didn't like any of the characters, didn't know them, didn't understand their motivations. Couldn't figure out who was the hero/ine. Didn't care. That being said, I just checked out the NYTimes book review, and I am not, as they say, on the same page as its author. As I drove and listened I just kept thinking Bar-ar-arf.

Certainly made me curious about places in Guyana, especially Kaieteur falls which I looked up on the Net.

Interesting because of the location and the addressing of issues that are relevant with regard to mining in less developed countries by the multinatonals and greed cf protection of the environment.
    Just Ok
In my opinion this is not one of Di Morrissey's best stories. I am not sure if is the way it is written or the storyline. I found it harder to get into than most of her other books. She always researches very well but to me the story wasn't meaty enough. I have to admit I was reading it on a long airplane journey which may have been a distraction.
    When the Singing Stops
I love Di Morrissey as an author. She didn't disappoint with her latest novel When the Singing Stops. The characters in the story were strong and sometimes confronting. Di's descriptions of the countryside made it simple to visualise. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I sat in my favourite chair, with a rug, a cup of hot cocoa and just read and enjoyed. Fabulous. Thanks Di!

Julia Lambert is in her prime, the greatest actress in England. Off stage, however, she is bored by her handsome husband, coquettish, and undisciplined. Of Its Era
The latest in my current occasional re-visits to old favourite Somerset Maugham novels. Theatre is short and punchy, frothy and very easy listening. I really enjoyed it, but it is very much of its time: cliched as it now may sound to us, I also very much liked being taken back to a era of glamour, grease-paint and glittering parties!
The chief character is Julia and (unusually, I think, for WSM) he does present us with a pretty well-rounded female 'lead'. She's clever - but very one-dimensional; she's flawed - and in many ways, she knows her own failings, despite staggering vanity and self-awareness. But I really liked her. Compared to her, the other characters seem less vivid - I imagine this is how the author meant us to feel.
Well read, in a voice that coped quite well with the male characters too, the narration also seemed a period piece, so it worked very well, for me.
If you fancy a few hours in the dressing rooms and cocktail parties of the stars, with nothing to tax your senses or offer any listening peril whatsoever, I recommend Theatre.
