Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Mark and the Void by Paul Murray, read by Charlie Anson.
What links the Bank of Torabundo, www.myhotswaitress.com (yes, hots with an s, don't ask), an art heist, a novel called For Love of a Clown, a four-year-old boy named after TV detective Remington Steele, a lonely French banker, a tiny Pacific island, and a pest control business run by an ex-KGB man? You've guessed it....
The Mark and the Void is a stirring examination of the deceptions carried out in the names of art, love and commerce - and is also probably the funniest novel ever written about a financial crisis.
    Members Reviews:
Well read - and with patches of brilliance...
...but I was disappointed that this book did not reach the standard of Skippy Dies, which I really loved. I didn't want this book to be the same, but I did want it to be as good. In my opinion, it isn't.
The trademark dark humour is there but only in patches really; and I was not gripped by the story.
    The narration was very good.
    A modern day masterpiece!
Without saying too much, this was one of the most relevant, articulate, inspiring and lucid books I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
I now know what everyone I know is getting for Christmas this year!
Intelligent writing that translAtes well to audio
Set in ireland in pre crash banking, various characters play out their different stories. There is a lot of humour and an anti capitalist theme, with touches of nihilism. Interesting points are made about human overpopulation ..yes there are way too many of us . There was a bit too much shouty dialogue in places that i hit forward on ..but overall this is a thought provoking listen as well as a good story that got me laughing a lot.
    My favourite narrator to date!
I thoroughly enjoyed Charles Anson's performance of this book which made it easy to listen to and hard to put down. The story is good with some very funny lines, I recommend!
Trying too hard? Hilarious - but only in patches
The Mark and the Void is set in Dublin with the country facing the consequences of the financial crash. The characters include loadsamoney bankers and economic migrants all aiming to survive. Not perhaps the most obvious or promising environment for hilarity? But I liked Skippy Dies sufficiently to give it a go.
I got into it quickly and some early sections I found really very funny - read with great pace by a narrator who handles many different accents consistently and well. Some of Murray's observations are not just witty but sometimes so sharply observed that I had to pause the book and listen again to appreciate some genuinely deep observation, delivered with dry humour among some more slapstick scenes.
Unfortunately for me the book lost pace and direction about a quarter of the way through and by half-way I wasn't even sure I would stick with it to the end. I did finish it and am glad because there were more chapters that I enjoyed, but overall it was too patchy for my taste.

Twelve Months is a beautiful, heart-warming, and necessary read for all, especially those caught up in the monotonous schedule of work, food, TV (or other techno gadgets), et al. Steven Manchester writes about life as it really is and really could be! Terrific! (Crystal Book)
    Members Reviews:
    A very heartfelt novel!
As I always do I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! Steven Manchester is one of my favorite authors. His writing style is so unique. Always engaging, told in a way that makes you feel like you're right there as things unfold. Although a tear jerker, this was one of my favorite novels. It got to the heart of family, feelings, life and death. Great job Mr. Manchester, keep them coming!
Don't let your situation determine your attitude-live it like Don!
I love reading about places. This sounds simple and it is, yet Steven Manchester drew a line in the sand at the very beginning of his story giving this protagonist a choice- give in and quit now, fight, or live. Live...live...live each day cherishing and doing and learning. I love all the locations mentioned in this book but Manchester goes beyond the map- he seeks to draw out raw emotion, stark reality, and brings us to the one place that really matters- that place in our hearts that, when we are young, is self-serving, denying and prideful. Then he brings us full circle in that place as the characters must reckon with the brevity of illness, past deeds and the present. Some of Don Di Marco's thoughts resonated with me. I know what it is like to be given a timeline, to think of all the things I haven't said yet, to dream about seeing my daughter be successful in her life and knowing I probably won't be here for it. When God winks at us reminding us that our mortality is in His hands, we quickly whip around looking back at our mistakes. We want to fix our wrongs, to make amends, to find peace with the ghosts who have followed us throughout our lives. While this book is fiction, there is nothing about it that might not be Everyman. No event in the book is hard to believe, unrealistic, or impossible.

"I have a gardener's inherent belief in the natural order of things. Soft-petalled flowers that go to seed. The resolute passage of the seasons. Swallows that fly thousands of miles to follow the eternal summer.
Children who don't die before their parents."
    A community in shock
When eighteen-year-old Rosie Anderson disappears, the idyllic village where she lived will never be the same again. Local gardener Kate is struck with guilt. She'd come to know Rosie well, and thought she understood her - perhaps better even than Rosie's own mother.
    A family torn apart
Rosie was beautiful, kind and gentle. She came from a loving family and she had her whole life ahead of her. Who could possibly want to harm her? And why?
    A keeper of secrets
Kate is convinced the police are missing something. She's certain that someone in the village knows more than they're letting on. As the investigation deepens, so does Kate's obsession with solving the mystery of what happened to Rosie.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a book about secrets and deception, the story told from alternating points of view and time frames, with Rosies voice coming through in her own dedicated chapters. A debut psychological thriller thats intricately plotted, from a writer with a promising feature." (Choice Magazine)
"This is not a fast-paced, edge-of-the-seat crime story but a psychological thriller about the dark side of suburban England where finely pruned rose bushes hide what lies beneath." (The Daily Express)
"Thrilling reads you cant resist." (The Daily Express)
    "On the Bookshelf." (Choice Magazine)

    Compelling
I placed this book on my wish list after reading a recommendation in a magazine. So glad I did throughly enjoyed the story the characters and the use of Rosie dictation.
    Slow-burner
The Bones of You was slow to get started but once I got used to the pace of the story I was hooked. I enjoyed Rosie's narration the most which allowed the story to slowly unravel, exposing the truth.
I'm not sure why the horse had to die, it seemed unnecessary! Also the police involvement was minimal which seemed unbelievable at times.
Overall I enjoyed this novel and would recommend to others.
I give this book 3 stars.
Something to pass the time No great story
"The Bones Of You is the first book I have read by this author chosen as it was a recommendation of Richard and Judy bookclub. I would say it was written well with some dark moments.
    The narrative was ok
A small Sussex time sees the disappearance of Rosie. Kate knew her as she helped out with her horses and her daughter Grace was approximately the same age. Kate tries to help Rosies mother Joanna who seemingly has the world at her feet. Her husband is a famous TV journalist. She has two perfect daughters with money and a big home.
Rosie is one of the book narrators seeing the movie of her life, she tells the reader the reality of living in her family.
Revelations are slowly drip fed to the reader with Kate and Rosie alternating chapters.
I guessed quite quickly where this was ultimately going.

From organising the school summer fete - 'Because of our inability to recognise our climatic shortcomings from the outset, arrangements for outdoor jollities get completely out of hand' - to the sometimes rather odd passions of childhood - 'I collect stones with holes in them' - Miss Read captures the essence of rural life, and in particular of village schools, as only she can. This collection also includes extracts from her letters: 'Michael Joseph wrote after the Observer thing and is throwing out feelers for a book. I shall know if he still feels like it - me too! - after we've met'. It will also include an Introduction on how 'Miss Read' was first created:
Miss Read was born fully clothed in sensible garments and aged about forty. She was born, in fact, when I was struggling to write my first book and needed a village schoolmistress as the narrator.
    Critic Reviews:
"The writing is an evocative ticket back to the 1950s and 60s: delightful tales of country life, which will stir memories in those old enough to remember and charm those young enough not to have those memories.... Anyone who takes pleasure in tales of times past, and the interesting trivia that make up everyday life will revel in this book. It's a delight from start to finish." (Oxford Times)

Brilliant - funny - feel good!
If you could sum up I Followed the Rules in three words, what would they be?
    Funny, feel-good, captivating
Who was your favorite character and why?
I love the main character - she has the perfect blend of honest humour.
Have you listened to any of Susie Riddells other performances? How does this one compare?
This is the first and I would definitely listen again
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It constantly made me laugh - the first ever adudio book to succeed in doing so. The main character's honest sarcasm is hilarious.
The best book I've ever heard (or read for that matter!)
I love this author! She is absolutely hilarious. The reader of the story could not be more perfect for the character. The changes in accents and voices were not at all cringeworthy (let's admit! Sometimes it can be!).
I loved every single second of the story. I'll be getting her other book and keeping an eye out for more from this author! Loved it!!
    Humerous story, easy listening
I've enjoyed this light hearted and unchallenging listen, listened to it from start to finish this afternoon while off work feeling poorly. Just the thing to cheer me up - made me laugh out loud in places. Loved the Scottish accent of the narrator, and thought she did an excellent job with all the different voices and accents. Easy on the ear, and well paced.
    Brilliant book!
I absolutely loved this. It's not for everyone as it is a very modern story but I think it is brilliant. I had a smile on my face all the way through the second half. It is original, witty with a feel good factor. Just what I love. The narration starts off quite pacey but you soon get into it and it is excellently read.
    Excellent narration
Well read, Susie Riddell, you really made the story come alive, will be looking for more audio books read by you best wishes Jeannette x

    Members Reviews:
    Misery loves company...
Julia's life is pretty good. She has a husband and son whom she loves and who love her. But her comfortable life is smashed into pieces when her beloved younger sister, Kate, is murdered in a seemingly random attack in an alley in Paris. When the weeks drag by and the police seem no nearer finding the murderer, Julia decides to take matters into her own hands. She has learned from Kate's friend, Anna, that Kate had been using online sites to indulge in fantasy sex with strangers, and had sometimes met up with men she'd encountered there. So Julia decides to visit some of these sites herself to see if she can trace any of the men who knew Kate. Soon she has embroiled herself in a situation that threatens everything she holds dear, and she has to try to find a way out...
Oh dear! I'm sure there will be a million glowing reviews for this book, and it undoubtedly has some good points. But it's yet another of these woeful misery-fests that have taken over bookworld recently - a first person present tense monologue from a narrator who is utterly miserable even before her sister is murdered, so you can imagine how cheery she is afterwards. There really ought to be some kind of rating system on the back of books to let people know in advance:
Sex - yes, lots and lots, both real and virtual, but not overly graphic
Foul language - occasional, but I've read far worse
Length - roughly twice as long as it needed to be
Humour - none, nada, not the slightest glimmer, not even unintentional
Misery - oh yes! Plenty! Enough to reduce the happiness quotient of the planet by at least 5%
Credibility - not much, and gets less as the book wears on
The first half of the book really drags with nothing much happening except Julia telling us how grief-stricken she is. A brutal edit of this section could have made a huge difference to the whole book. There were so many points where I really just didn't want to go on with it - had it not been a review copy, I'd undoubtedly have given up. Not only is Julia dealing with her grief and her feelings of inadequacy as a parent to her adopted son, but she's also a recovering alcoholic, so every few pages we are treated to her wishing she could have a drink and talking herself out of it. Am I really the only person in the world who is bored, bored, bored with reading about alcoholics? Especially when, as with this one, it had very little relevance to the plot.
The second half is much better once the plot finally begins to move.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a lush meadow, bounded by dense forest and a sparkling river, the flags of several tents flutter in the breeze, rich with the promise of halcyon days. Yet all is not as tranquil as it may seem: The balance of power wrought between the occupants of The Great Field, as it is properly known, is a delicate one, and relationships are stretched to breaking point when a new, large and disciplined group offers to share its surplus of milk pudding. Only the narrator acknowledges the gesture, but by forging links with the newcomers, he becomes a conduit for change, change that threatens The Great Field.
    Members Reviews:
    Mills brings it all together
What did you like most about The Field of the Cloth of Gold?
Mills tells tales of our times and of human behaviour with a dead pan humour and spot on observations. He contrasts the joy of life with the urge to order it like no other author.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All characters are integrated and one would not have a point without the others. That said, it is not the characters that really builds the novel but the interaction between them.
Have you listened to any of Gareth Armstrongs other performances? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to Gareth Armstrong before but he found a perfect tone for the text.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It really was a one session book in the garden.
    Any additional comments?
This novel sort of brings all other Mills books together.
