    Language: English
    Release date: 04-05-16

    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
When 10-year-old Liam's family moves to be near his grandmother, who is suffering from dementia, he's left to navigate his new neighborhood, school, and grandmother's illness all by himself. His mom regularly loses herself in a bottle of wine, and his sister sneaks out to who knows where shortly after "wine o'clock" - as they've come to call it - strikes. Life it isn't easy.
The one place he seems to find solace is a rundown church where he finds an oversized gargoyle that keeps drawing him in. After learning that gargoyles were created to protect people from demons and evil spirits, he can't seem to shake the image of the old stone bird, and its presence weaves itself into the stories Liam tells himself and others, so much so that Liam starts to believe that it might be alive.
Shy Liam's only means of confidence during shared story time is to tell tales of the gargoyle. His classmates mock him at first but are soon captivated by his storytelling, and his teacher's slight nods of encouragement fuel Liam's belief in the bird and lead him to think that she knows a thing or two about the old bird herself.
As his home life gets harder and the bullies more relentless, the gargoyle seemingly brings Liam's stories to life - swooping in to protect and defend him in the most unexpected ways. But is the old stone bird really alive, or is it just Liam's imagination finding ways to help him through a difficult time?
    Critic Reviews:
"I loved this and read it in one sitting.... It's a really special debut, full of heart, hope and the power of storytelling" (Bookseller)
"Incredibly moving.... [Stonebird] has a beautiful message founded in a strong moral compass, that every story must be told and every person, remembered in its telling." (We Love This Book)
"[A] wonderfully engaging and thought-provoking debut." (Booklist )

A delightful new voice in middle grade fiction
How good is STONEBIRD? I read it straight through in one sitting, because I had to know about the gargoyle. And because I was afraid if I stopped reading, something bad (okay, worse) might happen to Danny. Mike Revell did an outstanding job drawing me in as a reader with his spot-on voice, the touch of magical realism, and the oh-so-familiar family/school drama that so many kids go through every day.
As a writer, I often find myself reading books with a critical eye. But, this book was so good that the writer part of my brain took a break, and the reader part of me found itself lost in the adventure.
Bravo to Mike Revell on his debut novel. This is an author to watch!
A testament to the power of stories
Very well written first novel by this author. The characters were believable and relatable and the dialog was comfortable and believable. The story was very engaging and there was enough mystery to keep it exciting throughout the book. I recommend this to anyone from 5th grade and up.
    Good debut, interesting story.
Liam is eleven years old. His absent father moved out of home for another woman several years ago, and his mother has never coped. Now his maternal grandmother being in a care facility with dementia, has pushed his mum over the edge.
But there are 2 mysteries to distract Liam from these cares. And from Matt, the bully, who uses his 2 henchmen to outnumber Liam like a lily-livered coward.

    Publisher's Summary:
The only remaining female in the George Nash family, Ociee chooses to view herself as more brother than sister. Her favorite outfit is soft, worn dungarees and her brother Ben's old shirt that Mama made. Ociee's hair is a wispy web of curls and, dreadfully, it usually falls in her face when her self-tied ribbons slide down her back. Her gray eyes sparkle as she delights in jumping on moving boxcars and chasing strangers who dare to wander upon her frontier Mississippi farm.
This same little tomboy also goes to great pains to cook and clean and make a home for her beloved Papa and brothers Fred and Ben. She tries valiantly to fill the hole her Mama's death has left in the family. She fingers Mama's locket and hopes the touch of it will make things feel better. Ociee endears herself to all while she moves from her mother's traumatic funeral and its repercussions to a personal celebration of her own young life. Her eyes learn to see beyond stereotypes and traditional viewpoints as she looks into the hearts of people and finds only what is strong and joyful within them.
Ociee giggles as only an innocent child can giggle; yet her youthful spirit carries what would seem to be the wisdom of an older soul. Ociee triumphs over the sadness, fear, and anxiety of the painful occurrences of her early life. In doing just that, she will bloom in a new garden and weave her charm into the fabric of those who come to know her in a new home on Charlotte Street.

Families Come Together In Times of Need.
This was a sweet story with heart-gripping moments as told by a little girl who lost her Mom. She lived on a farm with her dad and two brothers and took over the role of the lady in the family. Her Papa decided to send her to live with her maiden aunt in North Carolina so that she could be taught all of the things that young girls need to learn at the age of 10. it was a huge adjustment for them all but it turns out to be a wise choice on her Papa's part. Life takes many twists and turns but Ocee adjusts well and is happy with her new life.
This is a compelling insight into the real world of hard knocks that can have a happy ending.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much!. The narrator was fantastic and I hope to hear more from her.

    Technical difficulties!
Would you try another book from Sara Tukan and/or Leszek Wojtaszak?
Yes, this is a great author and reader.
Has Tunel turned you off from other books in this genre?
perhaps, depending on their ability to actually record a book
Would you be willing to try another one of Leszek Wojtaszaks performances?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
I started listening to this book as I really enjoyed the author's first book but there was a problem. After chapter one, all the chapters are mixed up. Chapter two starts with chapter nineteen, and goes to twenty-two and twenty-three, then ends up back at chapter two in the chapter seven slot. What a mess. The story and recording are great but whoever set this up really screwed up from a technical perspective. Really, really disappointing.

    Thoroughly entertaining
We thoroughly enjoyed Prince Dandypants and Robert Llewellyn's delivery is priceless.
The story is fairly amusing to start with but the performance of the story had us all hooting with laughter, particularly most of what Jollops had to say. This was a great accompaniment to a long drive and almost certainly won't be one of those "listen once" purchases.
Get the Tony Robinson narrator version!
The narrator does not seem to have a very big range of voices for all the parts which made this a huge disappointment.
Tony Robinson has previously been a vary funny narrator of this story and his voices were all great!
    Good fun
What a great bit of mischief these characters all indulge in. I've spent several very happy hours smiling or laughing out loud. Nothing to cause parents any concerns about children listening to this story. I can honestly say I've listened several times already and expect to listen quite a lot over the coming years. Good value for money

Is this saga America's equivalent to Harry Potter?
After reading this saga, I would say that this is America's answer to Harry Potter. I was very impressed with this author's unique ideas for a different world. It is very well written plus an amazing story line. Also, I could see how kids could get addicted to these characters. Lastly, someone needs to make a movie trilogy out of this saga. If done the right way, this would probably do as well as Harry Potter, if not better. If you have kids, they would love this series! Enjoy.
    Yet another great read!!!
I think this was another great read and a very good adventure yet again. Very well written and I felt like I was actually there. J.W.Z. has put together this world and created different personalities and situations with these characters that I can compare to everyday situations.

    Members Reviews:
    Believable Fiction
I was very impressed with the storyline of this book. Susan Thogerson Maas has woven a believable story of a young girl's quest to follow her dream of photography. Along the way she learns the importance of family, friends and a relationship with God. As in real life, there are challenges along the way. I enjoyed that the storyline was not predictable, and there were a number of twists and turns to keep the reader interested.
    A Book To Share
I always make it a point to read books before I give them to my grandchildren. Books are perhaps my favorite gifts as they offer not only the stories within, but also opportunities to expand their horizons and to discuss the values and lessons presented. This charming and engaging story is one that I am looking forward to sharing with my 11-year-old granddaughter. I hope she finds it as moving as I did. Please let this delightful first work be followed with many more.
    Encouraging Read
This is a delightful tale that most of us can identify with, a coming of age and search for purpose. When we believe God is on our side , and that he believes in us, we are more sensitive to his nudging us in directions that fulfill us.
I loved this story and all of it's characters

Not all fairy tales take place in rolling hills or along sparkling beaches. Some happen right below our very feet like the corpses they are....
Evolved Publishing presents the second novel in The Balderdash Saga, a series of lower grade fairytales with a slightly dark edge.
After defeating Maleer, the people of Balderdash work to expand their kingdom by exploring the vast caverns in search of more graveyards. Although Hurlock and the shaman have adopted Kaylan, few in Balderdash trust the prince. Scarlet barely speaks to him, and Screech is the only one to show him affection. To escape the tension, Kaylan unofficially joins the Spelunkers, a group created by the shaman tasked with mapping the caverns.
On one of his excursions, Kaylan is startled to hear a woman's scream. After locating the source, he watches from the shadows as two men chase her down, swords drawn.
Kaylan realizes with horror that humans stand merely an hour's walk from Balderdash. He faces a critical decision. Should he run away to warn the rest of the underground kingdom about the human invaders in the caverns, or risk losing his life - and compromising the location of Balderdash - to save the woman?
Be sure to also check out the first book in this series, The Underground Princess.
