What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the freshness of the story. Mr. Milosevic writes beautifully. The details of the lives of the river/pocket people and the Giants were described and painted before me with the assistance of the narrator's performance.

What about Jane Oppenheimers performance did you like?

Ms. Oppenheimer has a wonderful rhythm to her storytelling. She was able to transport me to the world Mr. Milosevic created.

Enjoyable YA Fantasy that left me hanging

This book is not currently part of a series. According to the author, No firm plans at this time, but, yes, I hope to write a sequel someday.

Having just read a book that explained nothing, it was nice to start with an explanation of the basic geography and character backgrounds etc. It was straight forward and clear.

I like Fireflys loyalty and persistence. I also like that she behaves like a real teenager - she makes impulsive decisions which later have serious consequences; and, towards the end, she is determined to do something she earlier thought foolish, simply because she is mad at the people who dont want her to do it.

Unfortunately, I didnt find the ending to be satisfactory. I felt like, although they learned something important, they didnt really resolve their current situation.

This is a great little book that is easily read in just a couple days. I am sure it is meant for upper grammar school kids but is very interesting for adults also. What an experience Yushi had! And Barbara did a great job writing his story. It would be a good addition to every school library.

Loved it! History coming alive.

Our family listened to this as an audio book on a road trip. The whole carload was captivated by the story! The book was written so our daughters could understand it (10 and 6) but the adults enjoyed the story as well. We love a well written living book that addresses real issues and helps us learn history in a way that is interesting and engaging.

well written, sincere, heart breaking, and real

There are many - and hopefully more will come - books on the internment experience for those who were children at the time.

Our author was old enough to remember it well, and to sense the injustice of it all without any political or other baggage. It is a pure experience and growing revolt against what was happening, seen from a child's eye. A remarkable boy, he made the best of it, always finding a replacement for what was taken, and making the best of it. To read this is to really know what was taken from Japanese Americans during the internment.

Amazing

This is an amazing, touching story of Shigeru Yabu who was forced from his home in San Francisco to live at the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp in Wyoming.

Baseball, Music or Both?

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a really sweet book about a small group of friends making a little league baseball team. I don't understand the rules of the little league very well, but it made sense in the novel and I thought it was really awesome how they included a girl in their little league team. I particularly liked Harry, the main character's father and the coach of the team, and his unorthodox methods for teaching baseball, based on music.

The narrator, David Kresser, was not as impressive. He didn't sound very good in the recording and I had to pause frequently when the narration started to really annoy me.

Sufficiently interesting for 6-12 year olds

We listened to this during a long car trip with kids ages 4-17. The older teens enjoyed poking fun at the story line, characters, narrator's voices, and the narrator's pronunciation of some words. The kids who enjoyed the story were about 6-10 years old, with the 12 year old listening but not asking for more. Adults found the story interesting enough to keep listening, and actually some of the information relating to the New Jersey coast was fascinating. The characters use very modern expressions that bordered on offensive to younger ears, but it wasn't anything inappropriate enough to turn off the audiobook. We recommend this book for a good family book during a summer vacation car drive, or for a pre-teen girl anytime.

In SPACEJACKERS by Huw Powell, 12-year-old Jake Cutler knows very little about his past --- just that he was abandoned on the remote planet Remota as an infant with a jeweled pendant, which he keeps with him at all times. Raised by the reclusive cybermonks, Jake always dreamed of having his own interstellar adventures.

One night, the monastery is attacked by space pirates looking for Jake, and his only hope of escape is to leave the planet with a charismatic treasure seeker. Jake is finally getting the adventure he always wanted, but he quickly discovers he should be careful what he wishes for. Along the way, Jake teams up with a ragtag crew of space pirates and faces several challenges on his quest to unlock the secrets of his past.

The publisher describes SPACEJACKERS as a cross between Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean --- a combination I never knew I wanted until reading this book. After all, what could be better than pirate adventures in space? This book is a great introduction to science fiction for young readers who love a lot of action and adventure. The world-building worked especially well. Readers will be taken all over the multifarious solar systems with Jake and his friends. The universe of SPACKEJACKERS clearly stays true to the author's sci-fi influences (including Star Wars and âStar Trekâ), but still has enough differences to be unique and make readers want to learn more about the planets and their various inhabitants. And of course, there were aliens, spaceships, cool tech and a space squid, too.

Jake is a classic hero --- brave and clever with a strong moral compass who gets by with a little help from his friends. It was the diverse crew of pirates that Jake teams up with that kept me the most interested. Their colorful language and diverse characterization brought back memories of one of my favorite gone-too-soon TV shows, "Firefly." Though this story was nonstop action and adventure, it seemed as though some of that could have been sacrificed in exchange for more character development. The plot never slowed or lost my interest, but some scenarios unfolded a little too conveniently and the word "space" was used a little too liberally for my taste.

This book is the first in a planned trilogy, and I would be interested to see what Jake and his friends get up to next and what new characters the author comes up with. I think reluctant readers would be drawn to this story, especially if they're fans of science-fiction or just enjoy lots of adventure. SPACEJACKERS has all of the classic elements of a science-fiction story and would make a stellar (pun intended) first foray into the genre.

The children I thought would like it, did. I am very pleased. Both of them are very advanced in reading but they enjoyed this thoughtful book for the story and the pictures.

Both should be heroines to young women today and in the future. Her life was committed to freeing as many slaves as possible, raising funds to help former slaves, and the women's rights movement.

Marsh Animals Preparing for a Hurricane

The Moon of the Deer is the September moon in Jean Craighead George's Thirteen Moons series, and title character is a young male white-tailed deer who lives in Mamacoke Marsh on the shores of Connecticut. The 43-page story, written for children in the middle grades, tells about the deer's experiences trying to find safety from a hurricane without invading the land of a large and very territorial buck. Along with him, the reader meets the other animals and birds of the marsh and sees how they are preparing for the extremely threatening weather. All the books in the series are illustrated with full-page colored paintings, usually spectacular. In this book, however, most of the pictures have dark and muddy tones due to the hurricane, and they are not particularly pleasing to look at. I realize they are realistic, but the white-tailed deer is such a beautiful animal and much of his habitat is so lovely that I expected more from the illustrations. But regardless of the nature of the art work, the story is good and it will help children to learn about the marsh and its inhabitants. Along with the other books in the series, it should not be missed.
