In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Jessica van der Hoek.
Jessica was born into a small farming town in 1979 and went on to live in several cities and towns in Southern Alberta. At the age of 12, she decided she wanted to become a paramedic, and pursued a career in Emergency Services.
In 2010 Jessica founded an Equine Assisted Therapy program that went on to be called Prairie Sky Equine Assisted Therapy Association. Prairie Sky provides Equine Assisted Therapy to adults and kids with special needs, and at-risk youth. They also have a PTSD/OSI program for First Responders and Military Personnel. Shortly after starting Prairie Sky, Jessica was diagnosed with job-related PTSD, and began a 10 year battle with her mental health injury, which included a fight with addiction, and suicide attempts.
Jessica is also a childhood trauma survivor, a rape survivor, and a domestic violence survivor, and has used her lived experience with trauma to become a mental health advocate. Jessica currently resides in Calgary, AB, where she works as an Advanced Care Paramedic and sits on the Board of Directors for Prairie Sky.
