Our guest is Kathryn Mannix - Kathryn is a palliative care doctor & author of the bestselling book With The End in Mind… in which she sheds a light on death & ways of dying through the stories of those she’s supported.
This is an informative and uplifting episode for us to understand how we can prepare for a peaceful death for our loved ones & for ourselves. Pretty daft to bury your head in the sand, because *NEWS FLASH* death is 100% coming our way at some point and these discussions can be really positive, even cheerful conversations. You’ll come away from today's episode reassured that normal human dying isn’t as bad as you probably think.
We arranged this interview at the beginning of February before most of us, certainly me, were even aware of coronavirus….. it’s hugely relevant to what we’re discussing today, and so, of course we talk about it but first of all, in more general terms, we asked Kathryn why we should be having discussions around death… what should we expect from a ‘normal’ death? What will those around us see? Is it scary and dramatic?
What if your relative doesn’t want to talk about it? Do you insist? How can you gently start that conversation?
On the topic of Covid - there’s been so much grief and loss and we’ve seen a big effort being made by MPs & TV presenters when reporting deaths to acknowledge that these were individual lives. Covid has changed the way we view death and talk about it.
We also discuss the legal issues around decision making - many of us will assume ‘oh well, doctors will decide & that’s that’ but there are definitely things that we should consider and Kathryn talks us through those.

Today’s guest is Dr Sohom Das. Sohom is a Consultant Forensice Psychiatrist working in prisons and criminal courts. He’s also an author.
Initially Sohom was going to talk to us about psychiatry and mental health in more general terms, but given the conversations going on all around us about ingrained racism in British society, we decided to focus on asking questions about this in relation to the criminal justice system and mental health systems, both of which are areas that obvious Sohom has experience of as a forensic psychiatrist.
Those from black communities are disproportionately represented in both the criminal justice system and the mental health systems. And that’s compounded by the fact that both of those systems seriously disadvantage black people once they are within their remit.
Institutional racism exists at every level of our criminal justice system.
Firstly, black Britons make up 12% of the prison population even though their proportion in the general population is 3%
Black communities are over-represented at every single stage of the criminal justice process from initial contact right through to sentencing. Black people are more likely to get stopped and searched, more likely to get arrested, more likely to get charged and more likely to get convicted than their white contemporaries.
Within the mental health system (we know that the criminal justice system can act as a gateway to it so the two are very much linked), the overwhelming evidence is that black patients’ experiences are more negative than those of white patients - they are more likely to be restrained, isolated and heavily medicated than be supported with counselling.

Sara Tasker's an Instagram Queen in my opinion - a photographer & writer who turned her hobby into a thriving Instagram business. She has a bestselling book, Hashtag Authentic and a podcast of the same name and she runs workshops and online courses that help people get the most out of Instagram be that for business or to feed their own creativity.
Sara's the complete opposite of some of the shallow content/accounts that Instagram has a reputation for sometimes - her account @me_and_orla is writing, photography and storytelling - it's very honest and very, very beautiful.
In this interview Sara explains why Instagram is a wonderful place for midlifers - a place to connect and build a community and how to get started so that you really get the most out of this platform.

Actress Julie Graham has brought together a star studded cast to create a YouTube drama about a group of friends navigating midlife. It's called Dun Breedin and it's the first drama to be made entirely in lockdown - the cast and crew are all family members. The scripts are fabulous, the performances perfect, the filming and editing is slick and each episode leaves you wanting more. Midlife women are at the centre and Dun Breedin doesn't shy away from the realities of female friendship. It's an absolute triumph on every level.
Every Thursday at 3pm on YouTube.
There's a great cause at the heart of the project - The Trussell Trust Foodbanks. In the UK 4.5 million children live in poverty and during lockdown foodbanks have experienced an increase of 6x their normal demand.

After 40 years of feminism women STILL do the majority of the housework – so, while the gap in gender imbalance is slowly narrowing in the workplace at home it’s widening … what Sally Howard refers to as ‘the stalled revolution’…
In her book, The Home Stretch, Why It's Time To Come Clean About Who Does The Dishes, Sally covers a wide variety of domestic arrangements and the gender presumptions that we’ve been disciplined into which lead to an unequal division of what she calls the ‘shitwork’.
The book combines history and research with her own story and the experiences of others too in an engaging and accessible way…..it's the sort of book you'll be telling your friends they MUST read!
