  • 11. TAKE CHANCES IN LOVE: BOLD STEPS, BIG DECISIONS, AND EARLY LESBIAN CRUSHES

Hey y'all! In this cozy outdoor episode (complete with unexpected British weather and flight patterns), Ashley takes a trip down memory lane, reflecting on her childhood crushes, early inspirations, and the absence of visible lesbian role models in the 70s. From crushing on Cher and Olivia Newton-John to discovering the power of Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, Ashley reminisces about growing up with limited LGBTQ+ representation and how it shaped her.

Ashley also dives into her experiences with meetups, dating, and finding community, emphasizing the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone to find your people. She encourages listeners to take brave actions, whether it's starting their own events, showing up to meetups, or just being open to love in all forms. Don't miss her advice on overcoming fear and the importance of alignment with your true self.

  • 31. 💔 Lesbians Deserve Happy Endings! Why do TV & Movies Keep Us Apart?

🎥 Hollywood, we need to talk.

Why do lesbian characters always die, end up heartbroken, or mysteriously disappear by the end of the movie? 🤨 Host Ashley Hydrick takes a deep (and hilarious) dive into the frustrating history of tragic lesbian endings in film and TV. From Bound to High Art to Carol to Ammonite, to modern shows like Killing Eve, she unpacks why we rarely get the happy endings we deserve—and what needs to change, like the 'bury your gays' trope and the lack of happy endings for lesbian representation.

🔥 Killing Eve (2018-2022): After four seasons of obsession, tension, and longing, Villanelle and Eve finally found happiness—only for Villanelle to be shot and killed seconds later. Fans were outraged. Even the book’s author criticized the ending. Was it a storytelling misstep, or yet another example of queer women being denied happy endings?

    📺 Other Offenders Include:

    * Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Tara’s death)

    * The L Word (Dana Fairbanks’ heartbreaking fate)

    * Blue is the Warmest Color (Toxic relationships instead of love)

    * The Handmaiden (At least it gave us a happy ending for once!)

Ashley also talks about her own lesbian rom-com script in the works (because someone’s gotta do it, right?) and shares a must-watch short film, Sister Wives, that's shaking things up in queer cinema.

Join Ashley as she revisits iconic films, shares her thoughts on 'Happiest Season,' and asks the crucial question: Why do writers think lesbians can't be happy?

If you’ve ever screamed at your TV when a lesbian character got written off, this episode is for you. 🎬🔥

It’s Not All Bad—The Wins We Love

While Hollywood has failed queer women time and time again, some stories have finally gotten it right. Shows like A League of Their Own (2022), The Half of It, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire prove that sapphic love can be joyful, meaningful, and—gasp—survive!

    💬 Drop your thoughts below:

    * Which lesbian movies or TV shows broke your heart the most?

    * What are your favorite lesbian love stories that did have a happy ending?

    * What kind of queer representation do you want to see more of?

  • 32. The Things We Don't Talk About: I Found a Breast Lump

Hey y’all, it’s Ashley — Your Southern Lesbian — and this week’s episode gets real.

**Spoiler alert--it DOES have a happy ending, and there's no scary talk here. I'm ok, y'all. **

After a quiet season on the channel, I’m sharing why I went off the radar for a bit. I recently faced a breast health scare that had me keeping things close to the chest (literally and figuratively). In this episode, I open up about what it was like going through the unknown, how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may have played a part, and why I chose to stay private during the process.

I’m also introducing a new series here on the same channel: The Not Scary Podcast — where we talk about things that sound scary in a way that feels safe, accessible, and yes, still a little bit gay.

Let’s talk health. Let’s talk hormones. Let’s talk visibility. And let’s keep talking about what matters in our lives — especially as lesbians, as women, and as part of a larger queer community.

I’m back, I’m grateful, and I’m ready to reconnect.

🧡 Got a topic idea or something you're scared to say out loud? Leave a comment or DM me on TikTok (@your.southern.lesbian).

And drop a 🌈 in the comments so I know you made it to the end. 💕

    💬 Topics Covered:

    * Why I started the Not Scary Podcast

    * What it’s like going through a breast health scare

    * The role of HRT and hormone imbalance

    * How silence can sometimes be a form of self-protection

    * The importance of supporting without overwhelming

    * Why we need more open convos about lesbian health

    * Staying visible and political — even when it's hard

    * Love letters to London, FaceTime, and lesbian community power

  • 34. Lesbians—Here’s Why You’re Afraid to Date (And How to Fix It) | Your Southern Lesbian Ep. 34

Hey y’all, Ashley here — Your Southern Lesbian! 🌈

If you grew up in the South (or anywhere really) hiding parts of yourself, you know what it feels like to bottle things up. But here’s the truth: bottling things up is what keeps us stuck in painful relationship patterns.

In this episode, I share:💔 The lesson I finally learned about boundaries (the hard way)🚩 Why ignoring the first red flag never ends well🌟 How self-worth and self-sacrifice get tangled in dating🔥 Why speaking your truth (even if it blows things up) is the key to finding real love🌈 Why queer folks especially need to unlearn “good girl” conditioning and start honoring their true north

If you’ve been scared to get back in the dating pool — or if you’ve been over-performing in relationships to “be chosen” — this is your reminder that boundaries are what bring you closer to the love you actually want.

I’m not a relationship expert. I started this podcast to encourage y’all to keep going. When you’re single and afraid to open your heart to love again—keep going. Try really really hard to absorb those lessons and get back out there. Relationships that don’t work are here to teach us lessons. Learn them and apply them to the next.

    • Esther Perel "Where Should We Begin?"

  • 36. Lesbian Dating: The Stories We Tell Ourselves (and How They Hurt Us)

Welcome back to Your Southern Lesbian! 🌈 I’m Ashley Hydrick, your host, here with humor, encouragement, and some real talk about lesbian dating and relationships.

This week, I’m diving into the stories we tell ourselves in relationships—and how they can hold us back. From convincing ourselves we’ve “tried everything, no regrets,” to doubling down on old patterns just to feel safe, these stories can quietly shape how we love, how we leave, and how we start again.

Inspired by Brené Brown’s Rising Strong, I’ll share how I’ve seen these patterns play out in my own dating life, and how learning to release old stories has opened space for honesty, vulnerability, and real growth.

    ✨ What you’ll hear today:

    * The patterns many of us repeat in lesbian dating and relationships

    * Why saying “I tried everything, no regrets” can actually hold you back

    * How to practice honesty and vulnerability—even when it’s uncomfortable

    * Why discomfort is the key to courage (thanks, Brené Brown + Oprah!)

    * This week’s #subtlechangeprofoundimpact is swapping that 3rd coffee for a walk or a calming tea 🌱☕

👉 If you’re a lesbian looking for encouragement to get back out there, build community, and thrive—you’re in the right place.
