Legg-Calve-Perthes (or just Perthes) disease causes idiopathic avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a child. It presents with a limp which is often painless but not always.

No one is 100% sure what causes it but the end result is disruption of the blood supply to the proximal femoral epiphysis which leads to osteonecrosis and femoral head deformity (which can go on to cause problems such as limited range of motion and osteoarthritis).
