Messy divorce. Cutting. Substance abuse. Trauma. Many youth live with painful realities. In this workshop, clinical child psychologist, Tiffany Whitworth, explains how at-risk behaviors are ill-attempts to satisfy basic human needs. Drawing upon the doctrine of the imago dei and the gospel message, Dr. Whitworth provides principles of behaviorism and emotion coaching to give practical ways to minister to at-risk youth, and help them meet their needs in godly ways.
Driven by our selfie culture, today’s teens spend countless hours consumed with their image and insecure about how they compare to their peers. They want to know they matter, but with Satan’s whispering lies convincing them they aren’t enough, they look to other’s approval, their appearance, or performance for their worth. Trying to secure an identity in anything other than Christ always turns up empty. In this workshop, Kristen Hatton delves into why and how our teens need help coming face to face with the idols ruling their hearts, in order to see clearly their true identity rooted in Christ. Theology matters and the doctrine of justification cannot be any more practical when it comes to the daily need and application of knowing who Christ is for them and who they are in Christ.

Liz Edrington’s noted in this remarkable talk at our 2016 conference in San Diego that the way we relate to ourselves impacts the way we relate to others; and the way Jesus has related and does relate to us transforms the way we relate to ourselves. We hope you enjoy these beautiful, comforting, and healing words.

At our 2016 conference in San Diego, James Sutton delved into the extremely challenging and critical issue of racial division in America. He noted that there is “reasonable alarm that we are not a post-racism society.” We can’t move past anything until we deal with our past. He says that the two questions we need to ask ourselves, in order to get to the beauty and hope of racial reconciliation are these:
How did we get here?
Ephesians 2:14-16 says, “For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one, and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.”

Our fearless leader at Rooted, Cameron Cole, gave this amazing plenary talk at our 2016 conference in San Diego. In his session, he talks about how anxious, wounded, and lonely teenagers (and youth pastors) are in this country. In the “age of the spirit,” the good news for our students and us is that our relationship with God the Father is perfectly reconciled. He loves us perfectly, regardless of our performance or failure.
