  • 442: Disconnecting from Technology: 3 Reasons You May Not Be Successful

Technology has become an integral part of our lives.  It assists us in a variety of ways each day.  Yet as helpful as it is there are times when it does the exact opposite.  It steals our focus, creates stress and distances us from each other.  Most specifically, the smartphone, an excellent tool, has become a crutch and addiction that many people cannot escape from.  Many psychologists, personal development coaches and thought leaders extol the benefits of disconnecting from technology throughout the day.  Articles on the internet abound with ways to become more in harmony with your devices.

However, many of those articles don't address the underlying reasons you cannot disconnect.  On today's ZEN commuter I talk about reasons why you have difficulty unplugging and how to change that.

  • 441: Thomas Sterner, Author of The Practicing Mind

Thomas Sterner is truly a jack of all trades.  He is a philosopher, singer, jazz pianist and of course author.  Regardless of profession, vocation or hobby, there is an underlying theme in all that he does.  He has, as he calls it, the observer mind.  As you will learn on today's episode we all possess such a mind and indeed life will seem less challenging once we begin to experience this observer portion of who we are.

In his book The Practicing Mind he details with anecdotes and wisdom how we can begin to see our tasks as the destination instead of seeing the goal as what to shoot for.  He details that the process of practicing changes once you change your mindset.  Subsequently he adds that the mindset of practice can be applied to any of life's challenges.

It is with considerable pleasure that I introduce Tom Sterner to ZEN commuter.

  • 483: Agnes Baker Pilgrim - Grandma Aggie

One of the great joys of hosting ZEN commuter is the ability to meet so many amazing people.  In an effort to help you (and myself) understand that there is a calm life possible to all of us I speak with people from all walks of life.  These people all have an underlying sense of gratitude, love of life and commitment to being the best they can be.

Agnes Baker Pilgrim has lived those tenets for 91 years.  In her journeys on this planet she has amassed considerable wisdom.  The best part is, she has made it accessible to all in her book, Grandma Says: Wake up World!  In it, like today she talks about commonsense ways to live a fuller more joyful life.  I am so grateful to have met her and to have the ability to share her wisdom with the ZEN commuter audience.
