ABOUT THE DOUBLE SHIFT
“Why do people fight for their exploitation as if it was liberation?” How Marx and Spinoza can explain our attachment to work, and what we can do about it

In a world of declining wages, working conditions, and instability, the response for many has been to work harder, increasing hours and finding various ways to hustle in a gig economy. What drives our attachment to work? To paraphrase a question from Spinoza, “Why do people fight for their exploitation as if it was liberation?”

The Double Shift turns towards the intersection of Marx and Spinoza in order to examine the nature of our affective, ideological, and strategic attachment to work. Through an examination of contemporary capitalism and popular culture it argues that the current moment can be defined as one of “negative solidarity.”

The hardship and difficulty of work is seen not as the basis for alienation and calls for its transformation but rather an identification with the difficulties and hardships of work. This distortion of the work ethic leads to a celebration of capitalists as job creators and suspicion towards anyone who is not seen as a “real worker.”

The book is grounded in philosophy, specifically Marx and Spinoza, and is in dialogue with Plato, Smith, Hegel, and Arendt, but, at the same time, in examining contemporary ideologies and ideas about work it discusses motivational meetings at Apple Stores, the culture of Silicon Valley, and films and television from Office Space to Better Call Saul.

The Double Shift argues for a transformation of our collective imagination and attachment to work.

On the 45th anniversary of its initial publication in Swedish, Sven Lindqvist’s polemic on history, politics and power is finally available in English for the first time.

This volume brings Dig Where You Stand, Sven Lindqvist’s classic text on history, power and politics, to English-speaking audiences for the first time.

First published in 1978, Dig Where You Stand is a rallying cry for workers to become researchers, to follow the money, take on the role as experts on their job, and “dig” out its hidden histories in order to take a vital step towards social and economic transformation.

A how-to guide that inspired an entire movement, it makes the case that everyone – not just academics – can learn how to critically and rigorously explore history, especially their own history, and in doing so find a blueprint for how to transform society for the better.

In a world where the balance of power is overwhelmingly stacked against the working-class, Dig Where You Stand‘s manifesto for the empowerment of workers through self-education, historical research and political solidarity is as important and relevant today as it was in 1978.

Buy the Book: https://repeaterbooks.com/product/blue-light-of-the-screen-on-horror-ghosts-and-god/

Blue Light of the Screen is about what it means to be afraid — about immersion, superstition, delusion, and the things that keep us up at night.

A creative-critical memoir of the author’s obsession with the horror genre, Blue Light of the Screen embeds its criticism of horror within a larger personal story of growing up in a devoutly Catholic family, overcoming suicidal depression, uncovering intergenerational trauma, and encountering real and imagined ghosts.

As Cronin writes, she positions herself as a protagonist who is haunted by what she watches and reads, like an antiquarian in an M.R. James ghost story whose sense of reality unravels through her study of arcane texts and cursed archives. In this way, Blue Light of the Screen tells the story of the author’s conversion from skepticism to faith in the supernatural.

Part memoir, part ghost story, and part critical theory, Blue Light of the Screen is not just a book about horror, but a work of horror itself.

Buy the book: https://www.collectiveinkbooks.com/zer0-books/our-books/disconsolate-dreamers-pessimism-utopia

Our world is increasingly sceptical of happy endings. Notions of resistance or alternatives - of hope - seem evermore ill-fated as we resign to a slow and painful descent further into capitalism. However, from a critical position, one that does not shy away from the scale of the horror facing us, we can begin to rethink utopianism, and plot new and speculative pathways for collective escape. Through quiet acts of naysaying to the world, of nihilistic or self-destructive events, or in wider-ranging renegotiations of what’s acceptable and possible at the limits of reason, pessimism revives the possibility for radical change. It calls for a disentanglement from the world and, in so doing, offers a glimpse at the utopian impossible.

Against the pernicious machinations of modern-day capitalism and a perverse optimism that sustains it, Disconsolate Dreamers explores the extent to which pessimism is compatible with a radical utopian goal - namely, a collective escape from the misery of modern existence. It shows that, in a thoroughly hopeless world devoid of rational alternatives, it is time for the Left to consider the pessimist a helpful guide out of the somnolence of capitalist realism, revealing how pessimism necessitates a radical revision of utopian alterity.

The Acid Horizon crew are once again joined by Bataille scholar and translator Stuart Kendall to discuss his writings on General Economy, Waste, and Sustainability in the era of climate crisis. How is our ecologically destructive mode of production complimented by a capitalist mode of consumption? Is luxury antithetical to sustainable society? And how do we make more of waste in a world where the dominant tendencies of production aim at an infinite extraction of value? Join us as we investigate how the economic works of Georges Bataille can direct us away from planetary catastrophe, towards sustainable, even glorious, new modes of consumption. Featured in the discussion: Bataille, Kojève, Blanchot, Deleuze, Nancy, and Junger.

As a failing journalist cares for his alcoholic grandfather, remnants of the elderly man’s long-buried stories resurface and drive him to an obsessional search for truth.

“The land of men is an untouched one. It is the companionship of quiet. It is so many darkened boats, heading their own way, in the night.”

Leeds, 2017. Disaffected journalist Fred Whitby and his mother visit Grandad Norman following the death of his callous second wife, Brenda. Norman has relapsed into alcoholism. Brenda’s daughter and her husband have invaded the house.

Whilst writing a diary in attempt to revive his creativity, Fred finds himself cast adrift in his family history, trying frantically to piece together the fragmented memories, half-truths, secrets and mythologies that lie therein. Disappearances. Post-war protection rackets. An IRA bomb plot. Romantic rivalries. The kidnap of a traitorous miner.

As spectres of the past meet with the looming presence of a post-truth future, Fred must navigate the illogical and unprovable stories of his grandfather and come to terms with the absence of irrecoverable voices in his quest for whatever truth and meaning remains.

Buy the book here: https://repeaterbooks.com/audiobooks/different-class-the-untold-story-of-english-cricket/

In 1963, the West Indian Marxist C.L.R. James posed the deceptively benign question: “What do they know of cricket, who only cricket know?”

A challenge to the public to re-consider cricket and its meaning, James was, all too subtly, attempting to counter the game’s elitist orthodoxy. Regrettably, he failed, and the history of cricket in England remains as it did a century ago — until now.

In examining recreational rather than professional (first-class) cricket, Different Class does not merely challenge the orthodoxy of English cricket, it demonstrates how the values and belief systems at its heart were developed in order to divide the English at every level of the game.

Indeed, be it the discrete cricket cultures of the “urban” North and the “rural” South of England, gender, social class or race; the history of recreational cricket tells us more about the (un)changing nature of English society — and how it works — than any study of the first-class game ever could.
