For post-Jungian archetypal psychologist James Hillman, the concept of the ego familiar to the work of Freud, Jung, and other psychoanalytic thinkers maintains a almost tyrannical predominance in the tradition of psychoanalysis. The myth of Hercules looms large over the discipline and our lives writ large. For Hillman undue importance of the ego has precipitated a multitude of psychological, social, and political problems. The solution? A break with the ego's oppositionalism and a deep dive into the world of the imagination.

Here, Will and Adam from Acid Horizon engage in a discussion on a simultaneously well known and largely overlooked enigmatic figure in the history of German philosophy, idealism and its discontents, and even insurrectionary anarchism, Max Stirner. The discussion provides both an in-depth look at Stirner’s core philosophical commitments and the intellectual milieu within which and against which he toiled. What is at stake in Stirner’s The Unique and its Property? How are we to understand Stirner’s heterodoxical approach to anarchy? And, what can Stirner provide to us as we confront those apparatuses that seem to render us docile everyday?

A Nation of Shopkeepers explores the unstoppable rise of the petite-bourgeoisie, one of the most powerful, but underexplored, classes in modern society.
The petite-bourgeoisie — the insecure class between the working class and the bourgeoisie — is hugely significant within global politics. Yet it remains something of a mystery.
Initially identified as a powerful political force by theorists like Marx and Poulantzas, the petit-bourgeoisie was expected to decline, as small businesses and small property were gradually swallowed up by monopoly capitalism.
Yet, far from disappearing, structural changes to the global economy under neoliberalism have instead grown the petite-bourgeoisie, and the individualist values associated with it have been popularized by a society which fetishizes "aspiration", home ownership and entrepreneurship. So why has this happened?
A Nation of Shopkeepers sheds a light on this mysterious class, exploring the class structure of contemporary Britain and the growth of the petite-bourgeoisie following Thatcherism. It shows how the rise of home ownership, small landlordism and radical changes to the world of work have increasingly inculcated values of petite-bourgeois individualism; how popular culture has promoted and reproduced values of aspiration and conspicuous consumption that militate against socialist organizing; and, most importantly, what the unstoppable rise of the petit-bourgeoisie means for the left.

Notes from Below are a British political group and journal who draw lessons from the Italian labour struggles from the 1960-70s to understand the limits of the modes of organising traditionally deployed by the militant left. Following the Italian operaistas, Notes begin their politics, not in the party or in a study replete with books on history and theory, but in the workplace.
In September 2021, Notes began the Class Composition Project, whose purpose was to understand our current conjuncture better by starting with the experiences of workers in Britain who suffer its consequences and drive its developments. Based on this project, Notes have released a book, Class Composition in Britain. In this episode, Kenny and the Notes from Below collective discuss the key findings of this book, especially the potential for future resistance opened by its discoveries, its theoretical background, and the work being done elsewhere by Notes.

At a time of almost unimaginable inequality, the mainstream still tries to ignore class. Radical Chains: Why Class Matters argues that denial of class is no coincidence but in fact central to the system’s survival. Exploring largely ignored histories of struggle and challenging the many myths about class today, Radical Chains puts forward the case that it is time to place class once again at the centre of emancipatory politics.

Tonight It’s a World We Bury explores a range of tendencies central to black metal and uncovers their potential as critiques of capitalism.
Tonight It’s a World We Bury is a radical re-writing of the history and politics of black metal music.
Challenging the commonly-held perception that black metal is a genre of the right — full of wannabe Vikings, Nazis, skinheads and other unsavoury characters — Tonight It’s a World We Bury looks at an array of black metal artists to re-affirm the genre as radically anticapitalist, revolutionary and left-wing.
Utilizing an eclectic range of black metal bands, including Darkthrone, Burzum, Liturgy and Deathspell Omega, and taking in the works of Marx, Nietzsche, Deleuze and more, Tonight It’s a World We Bury is a book on black metal like no other.

Alienation, generational tensions, rampant nationalism and the pervasiveness of atomic danger are all topics that haunted late Soviet citizens, and those fears are reflected in the films meant to represent their horror genre.
In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, production of horror movies from independent filmmakers and Hollywood skyrocketed. It was a time of intense Cold War conflict and a resurgence of conservative ideals. It’s not difficult to imagine that the ascent of horror occurred in conjunction with an increasingly scary and alienated world, and horror reflected those freights in the form of nuclear holocausts, toxic waste pollution, alien clown invaders and undead houseguests. Everyone was at risk - teenagers especially - because their present and future remained most uncertain.
If we can agree that such feelings underpinned American viewers in the age of Reagan and neo-liberalism, then what about late socialism? How did film makers depict Soviet society’s fears?

In this interview, Kenny Novis speaks with the historian Aaron Leonard about his latest book, Whole World in an Uproar: Music, Rebellion and Repression 1955-1972. This book deals with the radical history of American folk music during the cold war, as well as the ways in which radical folk singers were repressed by various institutions, including not only the FBI, but also the press and radio. In their discussion, Kenny and Aaron review some of the key themes of the book, including how the nature of political music shifted across the 40s-50s, the place of famous musicians in the resistance to the Vietnam war (including Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Phil Ochs, and more), and the broader relation between art and revolutionary politics.

In the search for new weapons, history itself becomes an arsenal of struggles. In the material processes of world history, one finds the principle of hope. These ideas are central to the work of the German Marxist Ernst Bloch, and on this episode Jon AKA TheLitCritGuy from Horror Vanguard and Profane Illuminations and B from Zer0 Books join Will and Adam in exploring and introducing his vast corpus. We discussed Bloch's theory of Utopian Hope, his relationship to Hegelian Marxism and Lukacs, and the theology of revolution.
