Five of the Flying Tigers, who helped China stop the Japanese from bombing the country during World War Two, have been honored by a Chinese chemical company with gold medals at Chennault Aviation and Military Museum in Monroe, a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana.

During the grand ceremony, which was attended by some 200 people from China, local government officials and community leaders, 92-year-old Jay Vineyard, 93-year-old Richard Sherman and 100-year-old Frank Burnside were awarded commemorative medals for their services rendered by their squadron, popularly known as Flying Tigers, during World War Two.

Daniel Baisden and Becky Brown-Hogan received the medals on their fathers' behalf.

Li Qiangmin, China's consul general in Houston, hailed the Flying Tigers as "a symbol of China-U.S. friendship" and "the trailblazer of China-U.S. cooperation".

A new report has found that donations to charity from home and abroad surpassed the 100 billion yuan mark last year, without any major disasters occurring during the period. The figure is roughly 16 billion U.S. dollars.

However, according to the annual charity report, donations from the public only accounted for 11 percent, dropping for a third consecutive year.

The report was released by the China Charity and Donation Information Center, an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Civil Affairs. It has researched charity donations and issued annual reports since 2008.

China received around 104 billion yuan in total donations, accounting for 0.2 percent of the nation's GDP last year.

The largest single donation in China's history was made in April 2014, when Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma and Vice-Chairman Joe Tsai together donated 2 percent of Alibaba's stock rights to establish a charitable trust fund, accounting for almost 25 billion yuan calculated by the share prices at that time.
