A positive discrimination policy applied to Chinese university enrollment is coming in for criticism following alleged abuses of the system.

According to poll results published by the China Youth Daily, almost 85 percent of those surveyed do not support the policy.

The Chinese national college entrance examination is the largest in the world in terms of the number of candidates. It puts students under notoriously great pressure each year to gain the qualifications needed to enter university.

However, under the "extra points" system, some applicants may win additional credit by being "children of martyrs", or because they are from ethnic minority areas or impoverished rural families.

More than 64 percent of the respondents think the policy has harmed the interests of the majority of students, while less than 14 percent say it has played a good role in encouraging development among students.

The national exam, or "gaokao" in Chinese, is seen as the most important opportunity for young people to have a decent job and a good life in the future, especially for students from rural areas. A total of over 9 million Chinese students sat this year's examination.

Experts say that it's a good idea to diversify standards and open the door to a wider set of applicants with special talents, but the policy has been scandalously abused; and despite occasional cheating, the rules are still necessary, citing the importance of providing preference to those from ethnic minority areas in which the quality of education is generally backward.

German football team head coach Joachim Loew says Germany's 1-nil victory over Argentina in the World Cup final is the fruit of a decade of investment in the country's youth development.

Loew has hailed programs adopted by football clubs in Germany after its failure to progress beyond the group stage at Euro 2004.

Soon after the event, football clubs in Germany carried out a research into the overall situation of the sport around the country and submitted a report to the authorities with detailed plans to develop football among young people.

Germany then decided to invest more in education to produce players who were technically better, and football clubs set up "excellence centers" across the country to train young players.

Loew says the World Cup triumph is a result of the excellent training young players received. For the last few years, the national team has developed its own style.

Germany's victory sees them equal Italy as four-time winners of football's most prized trophy. Only Brazil has won more with five.

It was Germany's first World Cup triumph since 1990, when Franz Beckenbauer's team also defeated Argentina in Rome, Italy.

The head coach says what also makes him proud is that his team is the first European team to win the World Cup in the Americas and to do it in Brazil.
