Danny from ZiaComics.com teaches us how to play the abstract strategy game, The Alpha by Games by Bicycle. This game is for 3-6 players ages 10+ and should take 20-45 minutes for a complete game.
Manufacturer Description
Lead your wolf pack as you claim territory, search for food, and hunt prey. After a successful hunt, you may enter a conflict with another pack. If that happens, you will have to decide whether you want to risk injury by fighting to keep the food for your own pack, or risk giving up all the food found in the region by sharing with the other pack.
In The Alpha, players control a wolf pack, leading wolves on a search for food. The Near Forest includes easier to catch, but lower value prey. The Far Forest has larger prey that are more difficult to attack, but if successful can result in great reward.
You will lead your wolves through four stages of the hunt:
STALK - Send your wolves to hunt in various regions of the forest and outnumber rival packs to become dominant in the area.
CHASE – Roll the dice for the region to determine the success of the hunt.
RESOLVE – Enter conflict and decide whether to fight or share food with other packs in the region.
ADVANCE – Move your wolf on the food track to indicate the amount of food secured during the hunt.
At the end of 5 weeks (rounds), the wolf pack with the most food will be declared The Alpha.

Those who have played any of the campaigns from Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden should be well aware of Arveiaturace. Arveiaturace (pronounced ar-vay-AH-chur-us) is an ancient white dragon. She was more intelligent and patient than most other white dragons and vastly more sensitive. She still retained her kind's lust for revenge and instinct for savagery, and was not gentle or kind by any means.
The skeletal rider atop Arveiaturace is a wizard named Meltharond Thone. He captured and tamed her. Over the centuries of her servitude her hatred for him turned slowly to love. When he died sometime around 1326 DR, she was plunged into melancholy. Even after Meltharond's death Arveiaturace still carried his skeletal remains and rider's palanquin on her back. In his later years, Meltharond used a complex web of spells to keep his bones intact and in their proper place. These magics continued even after his death, causing his skeleton to sit upright and even move his skull to face whichever direction Arveiaturace was facing.
Arveiaturace preyed on ships all along the Sword Coast, sometimes destroying them entirely in the process. She seemed to be committed to eating as many sailors as she could, and in making all seafarers and other dragons terrified at the prospect of journeying north of Ruathym. Few ships could mount appropriate defenses against Arveiaturace's overwhelming attacks.
After Meltharond's death, Iceclaws became overwhelmed by loneliness to the point that she sometimes spared would-be-victims, provided they shared her dislike of wizards, did not try to attack her, and had the presence of mind to try communicating with her. She was even known to, on rare occasions, rescue shipwreck victims when offered lavish rewards and treated with respect. Several humans snatched by Arveiaturace actually survived captivity in her lair after enduring roughly a month's worth of terrifying and suspicious conversations with the wyrm. Provided these captives did not attack her or steal any of Meltharond's things, Iceclaws was happy to fly them home to any location on Faerûn as soon as they admitted to feeling lonely. The accounts of these survivors made up the brunt of what was known about Arveiaturace and her lair.

If you name one of the popular anime series of the past 10 years, it is a safe bet Bryce Papenbrook voiced one of the characters. Surprisingly, voice acting was not the job he thought he would have growing up.
Watch the video to find out what occupation nearly took him away from voicing such characters as Eren Jaeger (Attack on Titan), Cat Noir (Miraculous), Kirito (Sword Art Online), and Inosuke (Demon Slayer) just to name a few.
I also get answers to all my hard-hitting questions, namely.... Cake or Pie?

I received a sample copy of the new title from independent comics publisher, Sigma Comics, called "Here Comes Calico". I planned on breezing through the comic just to get the gist of what it is about. That plan changed as soon as I saw the first page!
Calico starts out with the lead character becoming upset while watching a video of someone abusing a dog. I instantly hated the imaginary person beating the dog. I am a big time animal lover so it was really disturbing to me. I can watch hundreds of people being killed in a movie, but if one animal gets hurt it bothers me.
We find out the lead character, Hector Gil, is part of a group of people that track down these animal abusers and give them a little dose of their own medicine. I'm sure most of us animal lovers have dreamed about doing the same thing. Make those abusers suffer their own torture, well... Calico delivers that justice and more. We get to see him mete out his "eye for an eye" style justice at the end of issue #1.
There are also some subtle hints that his group is larger than just himself and they have some pretty good technology on their side. This first issue really left me wanting to find out more about Calico and his band of animal avengers. If your LCS doesn't carry this title, have them contact Sigma Comics directly to get some delivered, they won't be sorry.

By all accounts, 2020 was a really crappy year. We lost a lot of beloved celebrities, most events were cancelled, and lots of businesses were forced to close due to the pandemic. I thought it more fitting to do an end of year "worst" list rather than a "best of" list. This list is by no means ALL the bad stuff from 2020. This is just the ones that came to me off the top of my head. Please feel free to add your list to the comments. Here's to hoping 2021 is a much better year.

Mark Fenton is a comic book writer living in New Mexico. He dropped off his latest comic, SpaceCooler for me to read. It is a very interesting concept that was successfully kickstarted. He also left me an ashcan detailing all the other upcoming projects he is working on. They all sound really good and I can't wait to get my hands on them to see where the stories go.
I am a big supporter of local talent, so I arranged for an interview with Mark so he could fill us in on all the cool stuff he has in store for us comic book nerds. It sounds like you can expect some really great comics from Mark in the near future.

The Hero Trade comic book arrived in store with absolutely no fanfare or warning. We received it in the mail with a letter stating the following:
Dear comic shop,
I am sending you one copy of my first self-published comic, The Hero Trade #1, free of charge.
Please don't throw it away. I'd love it if you could put it on your shelf and sell it.
If you would like to order more, please email us directly at [email protected] and include your store name/shipping address.
Copies are $3 each [shipping included). Just let us know how many you'd like to order by no later than 9/13/20.
Thank you in advance for your support.
The story was really intriguing, but I passed on buying any due to the price point. If I buy it at $3, I need to sell it at $6 to make my margin. I just didn't think an independent title by an unknown artist/writer would move off the shelf at that price. That coupled with the fact the comic was only about 16 pages long with only 8 pages of actual story.
Later it was revealed the story was written by Matt Kindt and art was by David Lapham. You might recognize those two names from such titles as MIND MGT and STRAY BULLETS. A coupla powerhouse names for a supposedly unknown independent comic. We also found out this was another completely outside the box marketing ploy by Bad Idea Comics (Yup, those guys of the Button fame).
They announced this would be one of the titles under their new flag. The first official release for Bad Idea will be Eniac (Hero Trade is considered an ashcan). They will re-run the story as part of Eniac #3. I really like the concept behind the story. A low level street guy somehow gets possession of a superhero's body. He is selling off pieces of the body to the highest bidders. On the last page we find out the superhero is not quite dead yet (insert Monty Python monologue here).
This will be the first appearance of Captain Fab as well. The only reason I can think they want to mention that is the character must not die. This comic book is selling consistently for $600-$800 on Ebay. There are estimated to only be about 250-300 in existence. There were originally 100 Bad Idea approved stores. I think they expanded that to around 200 in their second wave. Only a coupla stores opted to buy copies for a total of maybe 50 more issues. Considering a lot of stores probably tossed them in the trash... they are kinda rare.
Dinesh Shamdasani, Warren Simons, and Hunter Gorinson’s are the ones behind Bad Idea comics. In addition to Lapham and Kindt, they have announced Jeff Lemiere is working with them too. The interesting thing to note is Dinesh Shamdasani is known for being a producer on the Vin Diesel Bloodshot movie, Ninjak vs Valiant Universe web series, and the Witcher & Expanse TV series. How long will it be until we start seeing Bad Idea characters on the TV or big screen?
