How do you become a full-time Brazilian Zouk teacher, and actually survive on it? When I moved to Australia I had five jobs. McDonald's, cleaning, security, surveys, housekeeping.

I dropped them one at a time as the dance income grew, and it still took me three years to go full-time, nine or ten more before I had savings instead of just survival. Gui Prada, Adayl Iost and I tell the real money story behind teaching this dance.

Gui came from a law firm in Rio. He became a full-time dancer by accident — he didn't even notice until a year in. His grandfather's rule still runs his money: "when I reach a thousand and one dollars, in my head I have one dollar." Adayl came through Disney and Target before going full-time last year, and he's honest about being in survival mode right now.

How dancers actually pay for this life:

→ Multiple income streams: privates, regular classes, weekenders, online. When the pandemic killed one, the others carried me.

→ Plan for the future, not the month: most of my week is unpaid work building projects years out. My full time is my future.

→ A safety net you don't touch: I keep three accounts I call Main, Flexible, and Do Not Touch. Gui keeps a full year of expenses.

The big takeaway: you don't quit your way into a dance career. You build multiple streams, plan years ahead, and keep a safety net you never spend. Going full-time isn't the finish line. For me it was nine more years to real savings. So if you went full-time, how long did your transition really take?

Marathon vs festival: which Brazilian Zouk event actually fits you right now? Gui went to his first full marathon and danced ten hours, and he was less tired than after a normal event day. When I heard that, it matched something I'd felt for years but never said out loud.

So Gui, Adayl Iost and I finish our event map, educational events, holiday events, and dance marathons, so you can pick what fits where you are.

Why a marathon leaves you less tired than a weekend:

→ It's not the hours, it's the gear-switching. At a festival I'm a teacher, then a competitor, then hanging out, then social dancing. Every switch costs energy. Four hours of admin plus three hours of classes tires me more than ten hours of classes straight.

→ The marathon strips that away. No class anxiety, no early mornings, no being everywhere. One mode, all day.

→ Adayl calls it "truly social dance": nobody is drilling the workshop move they just learned, so the floor goes back to being a floor.

So before you book the next festival, ask what you need. To recharge? A marathon. To learn? An educational event or a weekender. To get away? A holiday event in Croatia or Mexico, where the destination is half the point.

The big takeaway: you're responsible for your own experience. Other people's reviews tell you more about them than about the event. So go, and feel it for yourself. That's the whole skill.

What's the best Brazilian Zouk event for you right now, an expo, a weekender, or a retreat? Gui Prada, Adayl Iost and I will be honest about what each one is actually for. An expo is a taste of the whole world: you get a taste of everything, but not enough time with a teacher to understand their methodology.

Gui calls the big expo a franchise fair. His example is Interfusion in DC: more than a thousand people, six rooms of classes at the same time. Adayl calls it "content collection." You taste a teacher like a booth, record the recaps, and pick and choose later.

Which event should you actually go to:

→ Expo: go for networking, variety, and discovering teachers. Not for depth, you taste forty teachers and remember none of them.

→ Weekender: my favorite. Spend six to ten hours with one teacher over three days, and you finally understand why they do what they do, not just what they do.

→ Retreat: a retreat gives you time, not woo-woo. More days, less rushed, deeper bonding. Ask the organizer what it actually is before you judge the name.

If you've ever left a huge festival feeling like you learned nothing, you went for depth at a taste event.

The big takeaway: pick the format that actually fits your goal right now. A taste, real depth, or time. The event isn't good or bad. It's a match or a mismatch for where you are.

Is your Jack and Jill placement actually telling you how good you are at Brazilian Zouk? I don't think it is. And I judge these competitions.

Gui Prada, Adayl Iost and I pull apart two things people treat as one dance: social dancing on the floor, and dancing in a Jack and Jill. They are not the same.

I'll put my hands up here. For my first six or seven years of Jack and Jill, I competed like it was a show. World Champion on stage the night before, then dancing like a novice on the Jack and Jill. It took me years to break that.

Why your placement is not a measure of your dancing:

→ From the judge's chair, I know where you are from your first basic step, not your craziest move. Quality, context, and recovery score. Crazy moves mostly don't.

→ Adayl calls Jack and Jill "150% luck": the song you draw, your partner's state, your nerves, the judges' mood that day. None of that is your dance level.

→ Gui asked three judges why a simple, connected dance wasn't enough. Their answer, in writing: "good to watch, but not to win."

So I treat Jack and Jill as a fitness test, not a verdict. I train my mindset every social, then walk in like it's just another dance and let the rest go.

The big takeaway: Jack and Jill measures what a judge sees in 90 seconds. It does not measure how the dance felt to your partner. So stop using your placement to decide where you are.

Brazilian Zouk has a problem nobody says out loud: people are social dancing like they're doing a demo, and it's quietly killing the thing that made us fall in love with this dance.

I used to go to socials and not get a single dance. Not one. I was too busy watching, and Gui Prada, Adayl Iost and I landed on what that makes us: social dance stalkers. Back before YouTube, the only way to get inspired was to sit in a corner and watch your teachers social dance.

Now it goes wrong somewhere else. A demo is marketing, built to promote the artist, the event, the move. Social dancing is a conversation. And a whole generation is copying the wrong one.

The 3 demos, and which one to actually learn from:

→ Class demo: the inspirational boost in the middle of class. It shows how much you can already do with the little you know.

→ Festival demo: the wow reel. Built to be shared, not to model your Friday night.

→ Marketing demo: pure attention bait. Copy this onto the social floor and that is where the damage starts.

Gui got rejected from a European event because his team said the dancing had "a lacking of wow moments." Adayl brings Vanessa's advice from the booth: you only need one all-out demo a weekend, the rest can just be play.

The big takeaway:

A demo was never meant to be the standard. Stop chasing a yardstick nobody uses on the social floor.
