Brazilian Zouk was survival for me. The day my partner and I got our Australian visa, we sat in the car and cried.
Years of training like a machine, four world titles, all of it to earn the right to stay. And the moment we had it, we looked at each other and felt nothing. So I quit, completely, for over a year. Got an office admin job. Couldn't even walk near a dance floor.
That's where this conversation with Gui goes. I tell the whole burnout story for the first time, and we get into why people quit dancing and what brings them back.
Why burnout makes you walk away, and how you come back:
→ My full arc: visa survival mode, four world titles, the emptiness right after, quitting in 2015, the office admin job, the therapy, and reconnecting with the teenager who fell in love with dance for the family, not the trophies.
→ Where the machine came from. I grew up in a military family, "don't feel, don't think, just do it." I ran my whole career that way until it broke me.
→ Gui on the scene itself as a reason people leave: his own first teacher can't recognize the dance she fell for, "the dance I learned to love isn't here anymore."
→ The guilt trap. A friend told me, "stop blaming yourself for prioritizing yourself."
→ "Seven paths, two destinations." My Plan A-B-C-D way of deciding anything, what Gui calls the multiverse, so no single outcome can break me again.
The big takeaway: expectation is the thief of joy. When I was a machine, I felt betrayed every time a student chose their family over class. Now I just say, have fun, see you later, because it was never about me.
