According to Cultivation Theory, the more media someone consumes, the more one believes that the virtually portrayed world is actually how the real world is. This is true EVEN when the consumer knows the truth about how the real world differs from the world portrayed via media. Correctly understanding how the real world compares to the online world is not strong enough to override the subconscious belief that the online world is the reality.
