Take the Upgrade

10. The biggest mistakes people make when healing their gut with The Organic Dietitian, Sara Korzeniewski, RD, CLT, FDNP

Listen Later

Sara Korzeniewski is a Registered Dietitian, Certified LEAP Therapist, and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.

Sara graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, she moved to Arizona to complete her dietetic internship at University Medical Center.

Sara focuses on functional medicine with clients and takes time to listen, order appropriate tests, and get to the root of the issue.

Sara shares how gut health is so important. The digestive system helps you to break down your food and absorb your nutrients. And, 70% of your immune system is in your gut! Seasonal allergies and hormone balance can both be controlled by having a healthy gut.

Julie and Sara discuss common terms like the "Gut Microbiome" which is the collection or community of microorganisms that are living in your GI tract. And, "Leaky Gut"  or intestinal permeability occurs when your digestive system is compromised by food, medicine, stress, etc.

Signs of Gut Imbalance include diarrhea, constipation, bloating and gas.

The biggest mistakes people make when healing their gut are cutting out too much food, jumping to conclusions that you have a food intolerance and not focusing on balancing the bacteria in the gut.  Also, not getting the proper stool test or not testing at all to reveal the full picture of what is going on is also a common mistake.

Real food is always better than processed food for the gut. Fermented foods are great for those good bacteria. Bone broth is helps to repair the gut. Remember that there is no "one food plan fits all", it's important to find out what's going on in your gut to know what foods are just right for you.

Sara encourages being on a probiotic and collagen proteins, and dietary modifications within reason to improve gut health overall. Managing your stress, getting proper rest and saying no to things that you don't like are also important steps to manage your gut health.

What does the phrase "take the upgrade" mean for Sara? Taking baby steps and not necessarily huge leaps. Getting proper sleep and working out are also important daily actions.
