1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

Part One:

In 1836 Mexico had won its independence from Spain and was being ruled by a dictator named Santa Anna, who had a large army and used it mercilessly to hold on to his power. His biggest threat was an area we now call Texas, where both Americans and Mexican Tejanos who sought freedom were gathering and offering the promise of land to those who would fight to create a new republic called Texas. Men like Jim Bowie, William Travis, and Davey Crockett believed that the fight was worth their lives- and March of 1836 found them defending an old mission called The Alamo. This is their story and the story of the defenders, who came from all over the country- up until the day of the major attack.

In Part Two we cover the fall of the Alamo, the victory at San Jacinto, and the ghosts that still haunt the Alamo and the town of San Antonio,

The little Blue Ridge Mountain town of Bedford, VA, holds one of history's great mysteries- the location of the Beale Treasure, a legendary stash of gold, silver, and jewels said to be valued at over 50 millions dollars. All you have to do is solve two of the cipher texts that protect the treasure's location. Not so easy- people and supercomputers have tried. Of the remaining two treasures, one is housed with its deceased owner, and the other stands on a windswept hilltop for all to see and visit.

Part II The American 82nd and 101st Airborne begin heavy fighting in Holland to secure the bridges spanning the nine waterways which the British 30 Corps, with its tanks and infantry, will need to cross along its 60 mile run from the Belgium border in the south up to Arnhem, near the German border. The British 1st airborne is dropped 8 miles west of its target Arnhem, and finds that it is separated from Arnhem by two Panzer divisions. Only one brigade, Frost's Brigade, reaches Arnhem, and fights desperately to control and then hold the bridge long enough for 30 corps to reach it. Interview segments with Moffit Burris (82nd Airborne) and Brigade Commander Tony Hibbert (British 1st Paratroop Div) provided by Tony Gosling from "A Bridge Not Far" YouTube. An interview with historian Tony Gosling discussing this documentary is included at the end of this story. Includes the story of the spy "King Kong" who sabotaged the mission. Music: Reverie by Ross Bugden

These two episodes, part one and two, were the #1 most listened to episodes of the 442 we've done so far at 1001 Heroes. I have added some reminisces at the top and the rest remains unedited.

Footnotes: .OPERATION MARKETGARDEN (PT I): A BRIDGE TOO FAR...The two part story of a bold plan to strike the heart of Germany by dropping 36,000 British, Canadian, Polish, and American paratroopers in German controlled Holland in Sept 1944. Dedicated to the men who never made it back, this story doesn't pull any punches as to the command elements who screwed up through a combination of poor planning and in some cases, very likely sabotage. This is an incredible story of heroism on the part of the men who fought and liberated the south of Holland in the process. Recommended: A Bridge Too Far (Movie ) 1977 Part One: Field Marshall Montgomery devises a bold and desperate plan to drop 36,000 men behind German lines and Eisenhower reluctantly agrees. The plan is full of holes from the beginning, as intelligence is ignored and the wrong men are appointed for a few critical command positions. Finally, Sept 17th arrives and a 90 mile long, 3 mile wide armada of planes and wooden gliders take off from 24 air bases in England as the mission begins. It is the largest single day air drop in recorded history

This well-documented story of reincarnation involves a young British boy who, beginning at the age of 3, told his parents that he had been a pilot for the German Luftwaffe and died in a plane crash while on a bombing mission.

He provided sketches and stories which later verified his visions. When the remains of a German crewman were recovered from a WW2 crash site near Carl's home, researchers found pictures of that German crewman in uniform just before his last mission-pictures which showed an eerie resemblance between Carl at age 19 and the crewman.

This interview with the Cayce Institute's Peter Woodbury is a warm up for next week's THE CHILLING CASE OF CARL EDEN, a UK newspaper story from 2002 that really got people thinking about souls/spirits which decide to come back in a person. And that raises a lot of questions- one of which is, at least for me- how much is DNA and how much is reincarnation? And that's just one question.......

My Note: Gremlins is one the first two podcasts I ever recorded. It has remained a listener favorite for years. The other podcast is titles "When John Wayne Went to Harvard". Gremlins is a little old and worn, but its a good story nonetheless

Gremlins arrived long before the 1984 smash hit movie "Gremlins", although their nature was the same- troublesome, impish, and often mean little gnomes that created problems for anyone who came in contact with them. This was true for British airmen in WWI and WWII, who experienced all kinds of problems with the malevolent creatures, and some lived to tell about them. #Gremlins
