1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

Introducing Neil Nixon- well known author and radio show personality in the UK- with a lifelong interest in rock music. In part one we set up the ground rules for the great rock and roll debate- which decade, the 50';s-60's, or 70's- was the greatest decade for rock and roll? First- "rock and roll" will be loosely defined as "top 40" radio. The criteria-

CONSISTENCY- THE WHOLE TEN YEARS IS HOT

INNOVATION- NEW ,MOVEMENTS STARTED- SOUND TECHNIQUES -GENRES

ENDURANCE- HOW IS THE MUSIC FROM THAT DECADE ACCEPTED TODAY?

Neil offers a pretty good sum up of 1980 through present and puts it in a very positive light- but this is an early rock debate .that everyone who follows rock and roll should be able to enjoy..

The HMS deBraak was a British Royal Navy frigate commanded by James Drew. She was sent to accompany a large fleet to the Virginia Capes but became separated in a storm and spent 7 weeks acting as a pirate ship raiding Spanish and French merchant ships. When she arrived in the Delaware Bay on May 25th, 1798, towing a captured Spanish ship she was, as the story goes , loaded with plunder. A squall sprang up and a huge gust of wind capsized her, sending her quickly to the bottom along with the captain and 42 crewmates.

Dozens of recovery efforts were made but failed die to the 90 foot depth and fast currents where the Delaware Bay meets the ocean near Cape Henlopen., Tens of thousands of historically valuable artifacts were found, but the much anticipated treasure has proved elusive and may well be buried deep in the shifting sands. More than one company invested in millions in efforts that were besieged with bad luck and greed. Many say the treasure is haunted. This is the story.

By May of 1942 Germany had occupied Europe and was attempting to bomb England into submission. Japan had attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor just months before and had sacked the Phillipines , brutally killing over 10,000 surrendered soldiers and civilians. With half of the United States fleet damaged or sunk, Japan controlled the Pacific. Knowing that the US needed to keep a base at the tiny island of Midway, Yamamoto made plans to attack it, knowing the weakened US Fleet would have to respond, and in so doing, Yamamoto, with many more ships and superior aircraft, would destroy them. But Admiral Nimitz, planning the American response, had his own surprise planned for Yamamoto. Before 1942, naval warfare was fought by battleships and submarines. The Coral Sea and Midway battles, pitting carrier fleet against carrier fleet, proved beyond the shadow of doubt the power, range, and effectiveness of the aircraft carrier, and changed naval warfare and warfare forever.

Jesse James was an American outlaw who rode for Bloody Bill Anderson's bushwhackers and Quantrill's Raiders before, during, and after the Civil War., As a guerilla raider Jesse and his brother Frank took part in the brutal slayings of hundreds of unarmed civilians as well as surrendered union soldiers. As an outlaw after the Civil War, the James brothers and the gangs they organized were responsible for dozens of bank, train, and stagecoach robberies during which unarmed civilians were shot down in cold blood. Friendly newspaper reporting that was sympathetic to the pro-slavery south portrayed them as heroes and robin hood types-although no documentation exists that proves they ever gave to the poor. Rumors persist today that contrary to the accepted fact that Bob Ford shot and killed Jesse James (alias then was Howard) from behind in April of 1882, another man, Wood Hite, a cousin of James, was the one who was buried, and that Jesse James lived a long and prosperous life in Texas under an assumed name.
