1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

In part one we cover the story of Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy), Henry Alonzo Longabaugh (The Sundance Kid), and Ethel/Etta Place, the wife (we think) of Longabaugh who participated in a train robbery with them and accompanied them to Chile, where she lived with them for three years. It has been said that Butch and Sundance were killed in a shootout with soldiers in South America- but there are many conflicting reports, and DNA has not been found to prove that out. Etta, whose real identity has never been proved, returned to San Francisco before their shootout and her whereabouts have never been ascertained, although there are a number of possible leads. The mystery of all three is the biggest unsolved mystery of the Old West. In Part Two we interview Bill Betenson, the grandson of Butch Cassidy's youngest sister, where he shares his twenty years of research into his great Uncle's life

This is a story of power, greed, and corruption within our nation's "Fourth Estate"- the press, and how two men, William Randolph Hearst, a millionaire's son and Harvard dropout, and Joseph Pulitzer, a Jewish immigrant who arrived in America with barely a penny to his name, rose to the top of the publishing empire using a combination of hard work, imagination, ruthless greed, power, and irresponsible "yellow" journalism to line their own pockets while starting a war and, in the case of Hearst, causing the assassination of an American president.through politically biased reporting.

1001 Heroes interviews co-authors Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch regarding their new release THE FIRST CONSPIRACY... a true story about the plot to kill General George Washington just prior to the British invasion of New York City in 1776. Its a true gem of an historical thriller and we highly recommend it. Thriller author Brad Meltzer is known for his best sellers as well as his on-camera work for the History Channel series "Lost History" and others, produced by Josh Mensch.

The first of what will be a long running series at 1001 Heroes, this episode tells the story of heroes known and largely unknown from different periods in history and different walks of life.

Today: William F. Cody- one of the world's biggest celebrities by 1900, who brought the American West to a world audience; Virginia Hall, the only female OSS agent to ever receive their highest award for service after she provided espionage service saving allied escapees and training resistance behind Herman lines in Vichy controlled France; The Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite firefighting team that lost 19 of its 20 members fighting a wildfire in Arizona; Audie Murphy, who won every medal the US Army had to give in WWII despite being turned down for his size (5;5"), and survived to become an author, song writer and movie star; Carlos Hathcock, the US Marine sniper upon whose head the North Vietnamese Army placed a $30,000 bounty and who helped bring attention to the need for PTSD therapy (as did Audie Murphy);; Abdul Haji, a Kenyan businessman who, upon hearing that Islamic terrorists were killing innocents in a nearby mall, rushed in to help save others; and a heart-rending story of a son's appreciation for his father's years of sacrifice.
