1.30 How Trauma Affects Learning

Listen Later

In another "No Children Required" episode, Amee talks to Ron Hertel, the Program Supervisor for Washington State's "Compassionate Schools" program. Building upon the groundbreaking research from the ACE's study (Adverse Childhood Experiences), educators and researchers are beginning to understand that a child's hardships, traumas or adversities they face at home have significant impacts on the skills they need to be successful in school. In fact, it is being seen that what was previously thought to be a "mental illness" in a child might actually only be symptomatic of their current, traumatic situation.

This episode is for parents of children of all ages, educators and even adults who may have struggled in school and received a label but still carry with them into adult the lingering effects.

Resources Mentioned on the Episode

When we think of educating the whole child, their social and emotional development must be considered as a part of overall instruction. SEL is broadly understood as a process through which individuals build awareness and skills in managing emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible decisions that support success in school and in life.

Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity. As such, early experiences are an important public health issue. Much of the foundational research in this area has been referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
