In this episode, Prof Chapman talks about miscarriage which is a very common occurrence. Unfortunately, most people don’t like to talk about it due to the emotional trauma that it brings.
The risk of miscarriage increases as a woman grows older. For women under 35, the rate is 1 in every 6 pregnancies – that’s about 15%. At 40 the rate goes up to 25% and at 45 it increases to 50%.
Did you know that most miscarriages (about 99%) occur within the first 12 weeks after conception?
Yup! So if you get past that you’re pretty safe.
Some other questions that often get asked include: Is there anything that women can do to minimize the risk of miscarriage? What sort of events can lead to miscarriage? Do DES, progesterone, HCG, and steroids reduce the risk of miscarriage? If you’ve already had a miscarriage, what are the odds that the next pregnancy will be fine?
Prof will be addressing these and more in future episodes! There’s so much to learn!
