Description: Estonia_TUIT genetically engineers baker’s yeast to produce melanin, a black pigment that bakers yeast normally do not produce, and which is known to absorb radiation. To do that, we overexpress tyrosinase, an enzyme that converts common amino acid tyrosine into melanin. Synthesized melanin is anchored by a melanin-binding peptide on the cell surface and creates a radiation scavenger layer.

Title: rnAIR: Antibiotic resistance genes silencing system

Description: Antibiotic resistance is considered one of the main threats to Mexican public health, which will be responsible for 10 million deaths per year by 2050 worldwide. Our team developed an integrated system for designing small RNAs that silence antibiotic resistance genes and then delivering them through a nebulizer system with bacteriophages microfluidically encapsulated by liposomes. We’re also working on a sRNA database in order to train a machine learning algorithm

Title: Dengnosis (Tokyo Tech)

Description: Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne infectious disease with four serotypes, and because infection with different serotypes causes severe illness, no effective vaccine has been developed. Therefore, we will create a cell-based detection system and a device to detect the serotypes. Based on the results, we will predict the serotypes that will be prevalent. We propose a project that will ultimately contribute to the creation of a vaccine.

Title: Schistosomiasis: Novel Prevention of Parasitic Diseases

Description: Schistosomiasis is a waterborne parasitic disease in third world countries, affecting 230 million people per year. Because current treatment methods are not widely accessible, we want to prevent schistosomiasis cases altogether. SchistoGONE uses genetically engineering yeast to produce a natural compound, which will be placed on plates near the shores of infected bodies of water. The snails, upon eating the yeast, will be cured of parasites when the yeast releases the natural compound.

Title: NanoBlade

Description: We are Team ELTE, and we have created NanoBlade, which could facilitate both tumor diagnostics and therapy! We engineered E. coli to selectively attach to cancer cells and colonize tumor tissues. These interactions are detectable via fluorescence, so with the help of the bacteria, tumors can be visualized. Under blue light, our bacteria release toxins into their environment, killing cancer cells locally.

Contrary to their role, halocarbons, the most common refrigerants, are one of the leading causes of Global Warming, as well as Ozone Depletion. Description: Colorectal cancer is the second most deadly cancer in the world, despite being relatively easy to treat when caught early. We, the iGEM team of Wageningen, saw an opportunity to improve the diagnostic process for colorectal cancer by producing Colourectal. Colourectal is an engineered probiotic capable of detecting colorectal cancer and in result colours the stool. This alarms the user that they could have colorectal cancer, allowing for further treatment.
