It was breathtakingly close at Imola in both qualifying and in the race. Max Verstappen won from the pole for Red Bull-Honda but the McLaren-Mercedes drivers pushed him all the way, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri proving that the updated 2024 McLaren can also shine on a circuit very different from Miami. Ferrari were the third-best team, still lacking a little top speed, but the recent updates at Mercedes left Lewis Hamilton and George Russell fighting only for the minor places. Preceded by an emotional tribute to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who lost their lives at Imola 30 years ago, the 2024 race was remarkable not only for the tiny margin (0.7sec) separating Max and Lando at the finish but also for the absence of either a virtual or actual Safety Car.
