For a while out there it looked as though Charles Leclerc and Ferrari would spoil the day of McLaren-Mercedes. As the wind blew from the west, rather than the east, Leclerc had taken the pole in the closing seconds of Q3.  And, from the start, he appeared to be in control: Oscar Piastri sat in his mirrors but Lando Norris fell back in the wake of George Russell's Mercedes.  Then, almost inevitably, it went wrong: Charles stopped early for his second set of Hard Pirellis and was thereafter never in the hunt: with floor damage, his Ferrari was over a second-a-lap off the pace.  It then became a straight fight between the two McLaren drivers, with Zak Brown allowing them to race to the finish. Piastri, on a two-stop strategy, had the performance advantage - but Norris, on a one-stopper, had the advantage of track position.  In this podcast, Peter looks back at the key elements not only of that race to the chequered flag but also of the weekend as a whole - at the amazing pole of Charles Leclerc, the dismal pace of Red Bull and the wretched weekend of Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Previewing the 2025 Hungarian GP, Peter's intro compares the grit and talent of the Hungarian driver, Ferenc Szisz, with that of Nigel Mansell, who finished third in the first World Championship Hungarian GP 40 years ago; Szisz, in 1906, won the first-ever Grand Prix (the French GP at Le Mans) with his Renault. Before responding to more great questions and comments from listeners, Peter also talks about the updates to the Hungaroring, the loose wheel nut that cost Nigel the 1987 race and the 1991 Williams steering wheel that for a while ended up in a marshal's bag.

It rained all right - exactly at the time of the scheduled start of the Belgian GP.  This being 2025 F1, however, we didn't get a wet race.  Instead, the drivers sat around for 75 minutes or so before starting behind a Safety Car on a rapidly-drying track.  The pole of McLaren's Lando Norris then disappeared in the time it took for his team-mate, Oscar Piastri, to tow past Lando on the main straight on the first racing lap with an 11kph speed advantage - and thereafter it was Oscar all the way, helped by a slow pit stop for Lando plus two time-consuming Lando errors on hard-compound Pirelli slicks. Charles Leclerc finished a valiant third in his low-downforce Ferrari; Max Verstappen's wet rear wing settings left him a sitting duck on the dry track and a frustrated P4; George Russell finished fifth for Mercedes; and Alex Albon drove beautifully for Williams-Mercedes to hold off Sir Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari for P6-P7. Peter in this podcast looks back at the three days in Spa - at the Sprint pole for Oscar; at the Sprint win for Max; and then the Qualifying pole of Lando. There's lots of detail, too, about the upgrades to the cars as we go into the first part of a double-header before the August break.

It seems unthinkable in 2025 but in the space of eleven days in July, 1980, Carlos Reutemann scored back-to-back podium finishes in an F1 race (the British GP at Brands Hatch) and then in a round of the World Rally Championship (the Rally Codasur in Argentina). In this podcast, Peter Windsor tells the story of how Carlos was able to put this feat together, switching from Williams FW07-Cosworth to Fiat 131 Abarth without major problems - and winning the ProCar BMW M1 race at Brands along the way. The telling is also supported by Carlos' own words, as narrated to Corsa magazine at the time.
