Short Corners

Niel Allen is without question one of the fastest racing drivers I ever saw. A quiet Australian who did things his own way - first by building a commercial property empire in Sydney, then by racing a succession of stunning race cars prepared by the unmatchable Peter Molloy - Niel by the late 1960s/early 1970s was right up there with the best of the many internationals who raced in Australia at that time. From Elans to Mustangs, to F2 and F5000 McLarens and to brutal, CanAm Elfins, Niel was always decisively fast, impeccably neat and super-competitive. He was intelligent, too - a free spirit in the truest sense of those words. I sat down with him in Manly, on Sydney's North Shore, in 2014.  He passed away in 2022.

In an interview recorded with Peter in early 2014, Niki Lauda talks about his racing career, his business world and life in general. Niki was World Champion in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and in 1984 with McLaren-TAG Porsche; in 1976 he famously survived a fiery crash at the Nürburgring; and, away from racing, Niki founded Lauda Air in 1979; and, as non-executive Chairman of AMG-Mercedes F1, in the year of this chat, he guided the team to its first World Championships wins of the hybrid era.

In this special August Break livestream Peter takes your questions and comments around a particular theme - about how Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen take T14 in Hungary.  Delving deep into the subtleties of shorter corners and rotation zones, Peter, sketching live on camera, offers his explanation of why stars like Max, Kimi and Charles Leclerc are able to drive the way they do. Kimi recently said that he "turns in very late, very aggressively" - and that's true, of course.  Thing is, many F1 observers have mis-understood this to mean that he turns in late to the entire corner. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli scored a perfectly-judged win at Spa after passing the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in the closing stages - after making the pass, you could say, that he had been denied at Silverstone. Max Verstappen drove valiantly into P3 for Red Bull, despite a top speed disadvantage and numerous deployment issues - and he might have been P2 had not Leclerc's pit stop been "neutralised" by a brief virtual safety car period. George Russell, who did not complete lap one in the other Merc, has now been displaced in the World Championship points table by the driver with whom he clashed at Les Combes on the opening lap today - by his former team-mate, Sir Lewis Hamilton.
Peter in this video looks back at a race punctuated by seemingly random surges of power on the long Spa straights but which produced, nonetheless, some outstanding driving.
