Jessica Gutierrez grew up in a split family and also suffered from learning issues in school that caused other kids to pick on her. She became withdrawn and started falling well behind in school. Eventually two things pulled her back up. One was an accurate diagnosis of dyslexia, a learning disorder that I think is vastly underestimated. There is no medication, training, or cure for dyslexia. Those afflicted have to learn to live with it for life. The other thing that helped Jessica to feel acceptable both to other kids and herself was sports. Jessica discovered that she had enormous talent in soccer, basketball, and track. The success she experienced, along with the mentorship of several caring coaches and a better schooling situation, helped propel her to improve her grades, move on to college, and a career in veterinary medicine with a solid upward trajectory. Jessica will always deal with her dyslexia, but she is a great example of persevering and always believing there is a better path ahead for those willing to beat the odds.
